Swedish designer, Lennart Bender worked for major design companies in Sweden and abroad during the 20th century, including Electrolux, Ericsson and Sony. He also taught industrial design at Stockholm's Konstfack University for several years. Bender remains best known for his furniture creations, which, like this pair of “1200” chairs, are often characterized by their elegant simplicity and practical functionality.
These models have a rather peculiar shape that immediately catches the eye. It resembles a shell with wide surfaces, low sitting seats and a raised profile. Swedish design is considered minimalist, with an emphasis on functionality and simple clean lines, which is particularly applied to furniture. These ideals are rooted in the culture, and translate into a timeless design aesthetic. The brilliance of Swedish designers lies in what unique and stylish design pieces they managed to create without excess ornamentation. These chairs from the “Corona” series are exemplary of this, starting with their embracing bodies with removable seat cushions and button tufting on the cosy and elegant green bouclé upholstery. The sculptural appearance of the bodies is enhanced by the strutted teak legs’ airy structure with impeccable mortise and tenon joinery that’s visible on multiple points of the legs. The wood supports the bodies seamlessly, almost like and artwork. This gives the profile an attractive look that showcases the raised angle as well in favour of the sitting comfort. Lennart Bender has received numerous awards for his work, including the prestigious Red Dot Award, the Good Design Award and the Swedish Design Award. He is considered one of Sweden's most influential designers and was also one of the most influential designers for Ulferts Möbler along with fellow Swedish designer, Arne Norell.
Today, Ulferts Möbler is still a family business, run by the third generation of the Ulferts family. The company is proud of its heritage of Swedish quality, innovation and design, and continues to produce high-quality furniture for customers around the world.
