Danish and Scandinavian modern's timeless appeal has made it a go-to for designers and homeowners alike, as furniture in this style can be understated but still stand out in almost any space. This is true for this pair of armchairs as well. Adopting the trend of abandoning ornamentation to benefit the form, the designer of this pair maintained the beauty and warmth inherent to traditional Danish cabinetmaking. From as early as the 1920s, cabinetmakers and architects frequently collaborated to produce exceptional pieces like these chairs. The backs have a welcoming, enveloping shape that embraces the sitter. This pair of armchairs by Swedish-German designer, Otto Schulz, is a beautiful example of his repertoire of cleverly constructed pieces. With a creative and masterfully crafted hardwood structure and leather upholstered seat and backrests, this model truly deserves its place in Swedish design history.

Schulz's designs are a mixture of modern and baroque styles, as evidenced by these chairs. The pair was constructed with extraordinary care using beech and leather. From the carved backrests to the curved legs, the woodworking is exceptional. The beech is not overworked, letting its natural qualities and appeal define the frames. The fluidity of the carvings creates a harmonious contrast with the chair's angular structure, resulting in a design feast. Schulz modernised the traditional shape, avoiding excessive ornamentation while retaining the important features: the broad seats and backrests that give the chairs character and provide ample support for the human body. Furthermore, the combination of the materials gives a strong, rustic appearance. The colour of the leather compliments the shade of the beech beautifully. The expression “Swedish Modern” was first used in the 1930s, when modern Swedish design was becoming increasingly well known in Europe and the United States. It was at its height in the 1950s, and was characterised by many of the qualities of Modernism blended with natural materials, such as wood and a Scandinavian respect for craftsmanship.

This elegant, classic pair of armchairs reflect the movement’s central pursuit of minimalism, simplicity and functionalism. Not only is the pair able to exemplify these principles, but it does so while offering plenty of visual interest. The design is based on a fully upholstered body and exposed beech armrests, which stand out through their dark stain and curved, fluid shape. The body is more angular, balancing out the rounded arms, and is covered in a light, sandy-coloured fabric which contrasts against the wood and showcases subtle refinement through its evident quality. The clean lines of the armchair let the upholstery and the stained beech wood shine, with both visibly displaying expert Swedish craftsmanship. The armrests flow into the front legs, with all four legs following the same slight curve, further increasing sturdiness and the solid build.

These beautiful Swedish armchairs are early examples of Nordic mid-century modern design, as well as an outstanding craftsmanship with a quality that honours the materials and their users. The designs of Borge Mogensen aimed at functionality, minimalist appearance and easy accessibility. This pair of slatback chairs is perhaps one of the best examples of these principles of the Danish master with a rustic yet modern design.

The most attention-grabbing visual element of this rare model is the backrest with eight wooden spindles that create an airy look that recalls the traditional slatback chair style. The curved top rails have a sculptural look mimicked by the armrests that are also supported by individual slats. This creates a unified appearance that highlights the diverse shapes and the natural beauty of the beech wood and its versatile grain. Interesting details are to be found everywhere in the design, including the perfectly fitted seat cushions and the uniquely arranged stretchers connecting the legs. As the lower structure with the legs and stretchers combine straight lines with round shapes, the design gains a sculptural look that is appealing from all angles. The structure displays a beautiful contrast between the smooth beech frame and the elegant and textured bouclé fabric of the cushions. The chair’s manufacturer, FDB Møbler is a Danish furniture company established in 1942, and Børge Mogensen served as the design studio’s manager. Mogensen and the designers he employed came from the Copenhagen Cabinetmaker's Guild tradition and were unwilling to prioritize anything over craftsmanship and quality.

Extremely modest and confident at the same time is how these chairs can be best described. Mogensen preferred to work with traditional and natural materials, but also liked to experiment with new techniques; the resulting models are Danish Modern classics.

About the designer:

Borge Mogensen is without a doubt one of the most famous Danish designers. Born in 1914 in Aalborg, Mogensen was trained as a cabinetmaker and studied at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen from 1936 to 1938, and architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts’ School of Architecture between 1938 and 1942.

At the beginning of his career, he became head of F.D.B. Mobler’s furniture design studio. In 1950, he started his own design studio, collaborating with manufacturers Soborg, the Swedish company Karl Andersson and the famous manufacturer Fredericia from 1955. The collaboration with the latter resulted in many of Mogensen’s most famous furniture pieces, including the “Spanish Chair” and the “Ambassador Sofa”.

Mogensen’s goal has always been to design and produce quality furniture for the people, with longevity, quality, and timelessness in his focus. Because of this, Mogensen was known as “the people’s designer”, a true pioneer in democratic design. In 1972, he was awarded the C.F. Hansen Medal and was appointed Honorary Royal Designer for Industry at the Royal Society of Arts in London. ~H.
