This beautiful bentwood armchair is an example of European mid-century design as well as outstanding craftsmanship with a quality that honours the materials and their users. The period from roughly the 1940s through the 1960s was a high point for furniture makers, and this chair shows why.

The chair’s shape and construction show the signs of a master cabinetmaker as the robust, barrel-like body has a rounded construction, with the back flowing into the arms to achieve an enveloping, comforting experience for the user. The structure was also a technical innovation in its time as it was created by steam bending the wood. During the process, the wood is exposed to steam to make it pliable and then expertly shaped. The precision of the structure and the wood slats of the frame is evident at first glance, showing great geometric order, further enhancing the appeal. Furthermore, the darker colour of the backrest contrasts nicely with the wooden slats and upholstery creating visual interest while maintaining the perfect aesthetic balance. This complementing nature can also be felt on a textural level, with fabric adding a tactile dimension through its soft, patterned appearance, while the frame adds a modern, smooth feel.

Condition:

In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Some marks and scratches on the wood. This chair comes with its original upholstery or has been reupholstered by a previous owner.
