Danish Modern evolved from the craft traditions of cabinetmaking in Denmark, bolstered by the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers Guild Exhibitions from the 1920s onwards. It was further energized through international attention paid to Scandinavian design that has been seeing a renewal in the past decades. This lounge chair may explain why.

The widespread appreciation for the vintage style began gaining steam in the late 1990s, partially because the style was easy to relate to; mid-century design is practical and familiar it is easy to grasp its essence. The homely curviness and cosy aesthetic is at the core of the style, showcased in the general aesthetic of this lounge chair. The welcoming, rounded shape of the voluminous arm- and backrest is a signature characteristic of the Danish Modern style that creates the welcoming, warm look. The curving winged back and upholstery further contribute to this impression, completed by the stained beech legs. This chair has two different sets of legs, wider in the front, and square in the back, which is an interesting detail that while primarily serves the chair’s stability, also adds visual interest. This particular chair silhouette has been popular since the 1930s, from around the time Flemming Lassen designed the overstuffed easy chair, the “Tired Man”, for The Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Competition in 1935. To further enhance the voluminous profile, the full body is covered in a textured light bouclé fabric with tufted stitches on the back to create a stylish, visually captivating look.

Danish design allowed aesthetics to flow more naturally, which is clearly visible in the lines of this chair, from its embracing back to its voluptuous armrests. This lounge chair is an elegant and comfortable evidence of the mastery and artistry of the Danish cabinetmaker, who with his contemporaries defined mid-20th century modern seating.
