This transitional phase between the two iconic design styles brought us modern pieces that still retain the escapist glamour of the interwar period, such as this 1940’s sofa.

Toeing the line between bold elegance and straightforwardness, this two-seater sofa embodies the skill and craft of 20th century Danish cabinetmakers. The back, seat and armrests of this piece are upholstered in a soft, vivid red mohair fabric, maintaining versatility of its use while also setting it apart through its vibrant liveliness. While the design of the sofa’s body is uncomplicated, with a straight back and clean lines, the details and pairing of materials create visual interest and charm. When looked at from the front, the armrests seem to be flowing into the sofa’s two front legs, as they feature an overlay of wood in the same stain. Rosello Paris was a French furniture house active through much of the twentieth century, starting in 1928. Their models draw on geometry and style associated with Art Deco furniture. This pair from the 1970s draws inspiration from the Art Deco period in an expressive direction, with large circular armrests becoming the central architectural element of the chairs.

The armchairs feature tall upholstered backs that rise in a gentle curve above deep, generously cushioned seats. Their off-white mohair gives the broad surface a soft, elegant appearance, with restrained piping following the outer edges and emphasising the height of the backrests. Against this pale upholstery, the dark wooden frames are particularly striking. Each armrest takes the form of a circle, sweeping upward from the front leg, around the side of the seat and back toward the rear structure. The generous diameter of these loops give the chairs their unmistakable profile, while the open centres keep the wooden elements visually light. At floor level, the circular forms continue into short curved feet and connecting members, creating arcs around the upholstered body. Seen from the side, the contrast is evident: the seat is almost enclosed by the curve of the dark wood, while the high, softly shaped back projects upward. The fabric allows the form to remain the main focus, while enduring lasting quality and beauty over generations to come.

The dramatic armrests give this pair a presence that goes well beyond conventional lounge seating. This beautiful Danish lounge chair is an early example of Scandinavian mid-century modern design as well as outstanding craftsmanship with a quality that honours the materials and their users. The period from roughly the 1940s through the 1960s was a high point for Danish furniture makers, and this chair shows why.

Designed in the early phase of what we know today as mid-century modern, this lounge chair is a Danish delicacy with a unique look. With its classic shape paired with modern design elements, this model combines the best design characteristics of the 1940s. The large, enveloping backrest dictates the shape of this chair, as it forms most of the structure, including the armrests. The curvature creates an inviting and open look, enhanced by the soft mohair upholstery. The inside of the upholstered back is sectioned with rope trimming, which creates a shell-like look. The thick, bun feet-like front legs are a pleasant touch. The warm brown colour of the stained wood nicely complements the fabric, not to mention that thick wooden feet make a long-lasting, rock solid foundation for any chair. The chair’s back legs differ, they are straight, which is an eccentric detail that adds visual interest.
