While Kay Fisker is considered a leading exponent of Danish Functionalism, his designs show why he was also a great influence on the Danish housing culture. This model was famously brought to Denmark from China by Fisker and there manufactured by Robert Wengler.

Having trained architects and designers such as Finn Juhl, Kay Fisker designed his furniture pieces with the greatest architectural precision and quality. This “Canton” is a one-of-a-kind design, with an immediately recognisable frame and wickerwork. The masterfully woven cane gives this chair an airy look, complimented by the loose, upholstered seat cushion that adds comfort and cosiness to complement the frame. From every angle, this chair is visually arresting; from the front to the sides and back, the curves and geometric lines provide plenty of visual interest. This chair has a distinct designer edge, with clear signs of a skilled architect. The straight lines are mainly in service of the structural stability, while the lower panel in the front are the creation of an equally skilled designer. The back is especially creative, as it flows down to form the armrests and then further down to the legs, creating balance between the curved and straight lines. Fisker, like many of his Danish contemporaries was highly skilled both as an architect and as a furniture designer, and the “Canton” is perhaps the best evidence of that.

The manufacturer, Robert Wengler was a German craftsman who specialised in wicker furniture, and was appointed as a wicker maker to the Danish Crown in 1914. He was a pioneer in working with rattan in the early 20th century and became the most skillful wicker-maker in Denmark.

Throughout Scandinavia, there's a long history of craftsmanship which is especially true of Denmark and one of its most reputable furniture makers, Fritz Hansen. This beautiful chair is an exceptional flag bearer of Danish Mid-Century Modernism with an immediately recognisable look.

When the Copenhagen-based furniture maker Fritz Hansen opened for business more than 140 years ago, the company adhered to the traditional, time-honoured Danish values of craftsmanship in woodworking and joinery. Yet thanks to the postwar innovations of Arne Jacobsen and others, the company would become the country’s leader in Scandinavian modern design using new, forward-looking materials and methods. This model “1514” chair was designed in the 1940s. This design features stained beech legs. The back legs are slightly bent, which is a unique characteristic of Fritz Hansen’s designs. The seats and backrests are upholstered in a beautiful navy-blue fabric. The back of the chair is gently curved, accommodating the sitter. The slightly bulged seat offers great comfort, while visually complementing the backrest’s shape. The model “1514” chair illustrates the essence of an open and welcoming chair, that suits any interior. About the designer:

Fritz Hansen’s history goes back to 1872. That year, the cabinet maker opened his workshop in Copenhagen under his name. Along with his son, Christian, Fitz Hansen started the production of high-quality furniture in 1885. The Fritz Hansen manufactory (a.k.a. Republic of Fritz Hansen) earned recognition and reputation for furnishing prestigious institutions such as the Copenhagen City Hall, the University Library and the Danish Supreme Court. 

In the beginning of the 20th century, the manufactory started experimenting with a technique called ‘steam bending’, which ultimately led Fritz Hansen to become the world leader in the field in the 1930s. What started in 1915 with a steam bent beech chair, eventually made the company the specialist of laminate wood.

Thanks to Fritz Hansen’s collaborations with designers like Kaare Klint, the company played an important part in the development of what is today known as ‘Scandinavian design’. Post-war collaborations included Hans Wegner, Borge Mogensen and Arne Jacobsen. Jacobsen dominated the company’s designs in the 1950s, and among other world-famous designs, led to the creation of the ‘Egg chair” (1958).

Illum Wikkelsø was a recognisable figure of Danish seating design in the post-war decades, known for creating furniture that combined sculptural silhouettes with a strong emphasis on comfort. Working throughout the 1950s and 1960s with manufacturers such as Søren Willadsen, Wikkelsø developed lounge chairs and sofas that softened the stricter geometry of earlier modernism through curved lines. His designs often relied on exposed wood, generous upholstery, and carefully balanced proportions, allowing seating to feel visually substantial without becoming heavy.

Model “110” reflects this approach through its dramatic winged silhouette and restrained material palette. The chair is upholstered in black leather that wraps continuously around the high back, seat, and armrests, emphasizing the sculptural quality of the form. The backrest rises upward into  pronounced side panels that connect the wings to the armrests. The sides curve gently forward, creating a protective and enveloping shape around the sitter. These extended sides visually frame the head and shoulders.
