The curved, or banana sofa is often thought of as the most ubiquitous piece of furniture. While a sofa with a rounded shape is not ground-breaking, it has typically been reserved for people who could afford to choose an artistic style over a practical one. That is, until mid-century Northern European designers came to the picture.

Mid-century designers in Europe focused more on the aesthetics of modern design whilst employing the exquisite technique and material familiarity of highly skilled craftsmen such as cabinetmakers. This three-seater sofa is a great example of the style with its clean and pure lines coupled with craftsmanship and delicate research into proportions, materials and the requirements of the human body. The body has gentle, rounded lines that are visible even through the richly textured upholstery. The gently scalloped back sections it optically, giving the design a slight touch of Art Deco. The large seat and curving body is balanced by the five wooden legs, supporting the structure. The two tapered legs in the front leave the focus on the body, while the three back legs assure firm stability. The pairing of the wood and the fabric is perhaps the most classic mid-century European look that is inherently cosy and timeless. The modern aesthetic is further elevated by the textured, premium upholstery that complements the shape and the wooden feet as well. The large curls of the faux shearling elevate the sheer size and shape of the sofa, especially around the edges.

From every single angle, this three-seater sofa offers stunning lines and a rich texture. Above all, furniture designers of the era believed that design could certainly be used to improve people's lives. Looking at this model, this was evidently a not too far-fetched ideal.
