Erik Tidstrand was a Swedish designer and interior architect who worked as the head of Nordiska Kompaniet's lighting department from its founding in 1902, until 1941. His luminaires received international attention and were showcased at several prestigious exhibitions, such as the world exhibitions in Paris in 1925 and 1937, Barcelona in 1929, as well as the Stockholm exhibition of 1930. NK’s lighting department quickly rose to become a pioneering company in Sweden, ushering in a new era of innovative designs and modern aesthetics.

Designers like Tidstrand were constantly inspired by nature in their work during the mid-century era. They subtly integrated natural materials such as wood within models that showcased the use of modern materials. Like in so many other areas, Scandinavian designers excelled in creating many of the most well-known models of mid-century lighting fixtures. Manufactured at Nordiska Kompaniet in the 1930s, this “27524” table lamp has an unmistakable Swedish mid-century look. From the clean, geometric lines, to the patinated brass, nickel-plated metal and black-stained wood, this model is sure to add an elegant touch to any interior with its intricate body. Hans-Agne Jakobsson was one of the central figures of Swedish lighting design during the post-war decades. After training as both a carpenter and architect, he founded his own company in Markaryd in 1951, where he developed lighting that softened the harsher qualities of electric illumination through beautiful shades, natural materials, and restrained forms.

Jakobsson designed this pair of wall lamps in the mid-20th century. It was a revolutionary period in design throughout Scandinavia, where function and form merged in the most intriguing ways. The designer prized the marriage of form and function, with a poise that is hard to imitate or force. The shape and materials of the shades set the overall aesthetic of these lamps. The opaque glass is made into a bulbous form with a that narrows towards the bottom, held securely by the brass shade holders. The holders feel airy, slender, and minimal, allowing the focus to be on the shades and the light they emit. The brass construction also creates a rich, warm glow, enhancing the light while exuding a sense of effortless sophistication. Their designs often featured stylised figures, nature motifs, and geometric patterns, all carachteristics found in this ceiling lamp.

Bo Notini was among the most accomplished lighting designers working in Sweden with Glössner & Co.. Notini came from a family of designers, his grandfather Harald and father Gunnar being key figures of Swedish lighting creation. Bo Notini often incorporated etched or sandblasted decoration into understated, elegant forms, in the case of this lamp, they take the form of birds, clouds and raindrops - all elements inspired by nature. These stylised elements are etched on an amber glass shade suspended from a slender brass rod and canopy, creating a light composition. The gently curved sides of the shade soften the simple profile, while the polished brass introduces a subtle metallic counterpoint to the textured glass. When lit, the amber glass diffuses a warm glow that highlights the etched decoration from within. The restrained palette of brass and glass allows the quality of the materials and craftsmanship to remain the focus, resulting in a fixture that is both decorative and highly refined.
