Hans-Agne Jakobsson was one of the central figures of Swedish lighting design during the post-war decades. After training as both a carpenter and architect, he founded his own company in Markaryd in 1951, where he developed lighting that softened the harsher qualities of electric illumination through carefully designed shades, natural materials and restrained forms. Model “G43” reflects this approach through a particularly light and minimal construction.

The lamp is constructed around a slender white lacquered metal frame, creating a clear vertical axis that gives the piece a light presence. Three thin metal rods create the better part of the stem, spreading outward at the base, each ending in a small rounded foot, while their narrow proportions keep the structure visually unobtrusive. The stem is interrupted by two sections wrapped in brown leather, introducing warmth and texture to the otherwise precise metal construction. A large conical fabric shade sits at the top, its broad proportions creating a strong contrast with the exceptionally slender frame below. The shade becomes the visual volume of the design and filters the light through its fabric surface, producing a soft, warm glow. The simple triangular profile of the shade is balanced by the three-legged base, giving the lamp a clear sense of proportion despite the minimal structure.

The “G43” is a particularly good example of Jakobsson’s ability to give simple lighting a distinct identity through proportion and material. Its narrow frame takes up very little visual and physical space, making it easy to position beside a sofa, lounge chair, or in a corner where a larger floor lamp could feel intrusive. The leather details and warm fabric shade add character to the restrained construction, resulting in a lamp that works equally well as a source of atmospheric light and as an elegant example of Swedish mid-century design.

This model "C2293/6" chandelier was created in what we now call “the golden age of Scandinavian design”. Hans-Agne Jakobsson was the great Swedish master of lighting, creating some of the most recognizable mid-century modern lamps of Scandinavia. This incredible chandelier is no exception.

The design of this "C2293/6" hanging light clearly shows the Swedish designer’s studies in architecture, with beautiful geometric forms and symmetry dominating the structure. The three cylindrical shades hang from the brass pole like fruits, enhancing the organic forms that influenced Jakobsson. The smoked glass shades look equally appealing when the light is on or off, but when lit, the brass base truly stands out. The prowess of the designer becomes evident as this model stands as a statement piece despite its minimalism. Since the two materials - brass and tinted glass - dictate the look, much attention was paid to their quality and to the craftsmanship that united them into the cylindrical shape to create a timelessly modern look. The design has great proportions, and when lit, it creates an exceptionally atmospheric light, giving the brass a vivid colour as well.

This lamp is truly a testament to the enduring appeal of Swedish modern design and to Hans-Agne Jakobsson's lasting legacy as one of the movement's most significant designers.

Hans-Agne Jakobsson made a significant mark on the design world during the 20th century, particularly through his exploration of minimalist aesthetics and innovative lighting solutions. As these “Patricia” wall lamps showcase, the Swedish designer mastered both the direction and colour of his lighting designs.

These wall lamps have all the characteristics Jakobsson was famous for: they are elegant and stylish, and while the design allows them to be large and shiny, they never become tacky. With each brass arm holding a tinted glass shade, these lamps clearly show Jakobsson’s studies in architecture, with beautiful geometric forms and symmetry dominating the frames. The popularity of brass in Swedish mid-century modern lighting design can be attributed to its golden hue, which adds warmth to the style's streamlined aesthetic. This wall sconce set further exemplify the mid-century modern movement's guiding principles through their clean lines and geometric shapes. The amber glass shades stand out not only through the pairing of materials, but also by their generous size compared to the delicate appearance of the fixtures.

Sconces are a timeless type of lighting fixture that easily elevate their surroundings. These fixtures never go out of style, and this is especially true for mid-century brass models like these lamps. While already stunning individually, they are even more effective when placed in close proximity to each other.
