Perhaps the most significant achievement of mid-century European designers and cabinetmakers, at the height of mid-twentieth century modernist design, was their ability to humanize what had been standardized – erasing the very dichotomy that had made other, then-contemporary designs less appealing. These armchairs have a perfect balance, having a subtly intriguing yet still traditional look.

These armchairs have a cosy modern style, modelled on the Scandinavian furniture of the time, including the round edges, the generous proportions, and backs with tufted buttons. Clean lines and gentle curves - and a shared modernist sensibility - tie these chairs to the European mid-century modern movement. Accordingly, these armchairs are free of ornamentation, the emphasis is on the welcoming, round and soft shape paired with beautiful stained wood and cosy bouclé upholstery. Uniquely, the backs are quite low but still support the back perfectly. Their shape is in unison with the arms’ resulting in a cosy, elegant look. The solid wood, tapered legs expose the beautiful wood that comprises the chairs’ structures beneath the fabric. Furthermore, the dark colour and smooth surface contrasts beautifully to the pronounced hooks of the light bouclé fabric.

The craftsmanship of this chair’s cabinetmaker was without a doubt of the highest quality, and the maker had a great sense of proportions. This beautiful, inviting pair of armchairs lives up to its mid-century modern heritage both in terms of design and quality, which is further elevated by the luxurious upholstery.

Condition:

In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The chairs have been reupholstered recently in a premium bouclé fabric. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Please reach out for more information.
