Pair of Model "741148" Floor Lamps by ASEA, Sweden 1950s (sold)
ASEA produced models are pieces of Swedish lighting history. ASEA (before 1977 Allmänna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget), was a Swedish electrotechnical company headquartered in Västerås. It was founded in 1883 and was, until 1987, the city's largest industrial company. The historic company has had a decisive impact on how the Swedish electrotechnical industry has developed, but also on design history. Some models - like the “Viktoria” - are preserved in museums, and their technical prowess can be also observed in their other pieces - such as this “741148” floor lamp pair.
This innovative floor lamp model seamlessly blends tradition with modernity, reflecting the era's design ethos. The stem combines brass and leather, creating a subtle dialogue between warmth and polish. This mix of materials softens the strict geometry of the silhouette and gives the lamps a deeper presence than its simplicity first suggests. The cylindrical shades diffuse light in an even, calming glow, allowing the lamps to shape the room rather than dominate it. When illuminated, the brass elements catch the light, anchoring the design and giving it an understated richness. Every detail, from the base to the gentle taper of the leather body, contributes to a sense of intentionality. This pair feels both familiar and elevated, the kind of design that improves the atmosphere of a space without calling attention to itself.
Surrounded by stunning natural features, Sweden has developed a unique, nature-loving and understated interior design style. Floor lamps, such as this 1950s model have an important role to create an ambience that is cosy and stylish while not compromising on quality and functionality.

Swedish modernism of the mid-20th century embraced clarity and restraint, valuing craftsmanship and proportion. Designers sought harmony between form and function, creating objects that felt both modern and enduring. Founded in Stockholm in the early 20th century, Nordiska Kompaniet became a cornerstone of Swedish design culture, producing items that blended industrial innovation with meticulous craftsmanship. Through their work, lighting became more than a necessity. It was a way to shape atmosphere, emotion, and the rhythm of space itself.
This model “30006” floor lamp by Bertil Brisborg for Nordiska Kompaniet captures that vision with quiet elegance. Each lamp features a slender brass stem that rises from a circular weighted base which features a floral detail. The form is refined to a clear and uncomplicated expression. The stem combines brass and leather, creating a subtle dialogue between warmth and polish. This mix of materials softens the strict geometry of the silhouette and gives the lamp a deeper presence than its simplicity first suggests. The polished brass introduces a gentle glow, reflecting light even when the lamp is not in use. Above, the shallow cylindrical shade softens and diffuses the illumination, creating a calm and inviting ambience. Every detail, from the base to the leather body, contributes to a sense of intentionality. This lamp feels both familiar and elevated, the kind of design that improves the atmosphere of a space without calling attention to itself.
Bertil Brisborg, as the leading designer for Nordiska Kompaniet, managed to merge precision with a human touch, allowing his work to feel technically resolved yet emotionally resonant. The balance between the structure and the delicacy of the light reveals an era-defining sensitivity.

ASEA, founded in 1883, was a Swedish electro-technical company that became an important part of the country’s electrical industry. The company’s production extended across a wide range of equipment, including lighting, and its long manufacturing history placed it firmly within Sweden’s development of electrical technology. This set of three ceiling lamps represents the simple yet effective ethos that characterises much Scandinavian mid-century lighting, prioritising functionality, carefully judged proportions and the quality of illumination.
These lamps have an eye-catching rounded shape, with the edges just as soft as the light they diffuse. Each shade is formed entirely from opal glass, widening gently toward the ceiling before curving inward around the lower opening. The smooth transition between these rounded surfaces gives the shades a compact, almost bowl-like profile, while the opaque white glass keeps the form visually uniform. The use of opal glass is central to the design. When illuminated, it softens and disperses the light across the entire shade, producing a warm and balanced glow while concealing the light source within. Thanks to the concealed ceiling holders, the lamps are flush-mounted without any prominent exposed parts other than the opal glass shades. Their relatively shallow projection keeps them close to the ceiling, allowing the glass itself to remain the focal point. Used as a set of three, the repetition of the same rounded form creates a particularly effective rhythm across a ceiling while distributing light over a larger area.
One of the strengths of Nordic lighting manufacture is its ability to integrate naturally into architecture and interior decor, and these ASEA lamps are particularly successful in that respect. Their flush-mounted construction makes them suitable for rooms where ceiling height is limited, as well as larger spaces where the three fixtures can be arranged together. Simple in construction but atmospheric when illuminated, the set offers an excellent way to introduce warm, diffused light while retaining the clean character associated with Swedish mid-century design.
Condition:
In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The ceiling lamps have recently been rewired and reconditioned. There are minor dents and scratches in the metal. Due to the age and nature of the glass, the lamps may have marks, and discolouration. Additional imperfections on the glass may be present due to manufacturing inconsistencies and age. Hans Bergström was one of Sweden’s foremost lighting designers of the twentieth century. Trained as an architect and designer, he founded Ateljé Lyktan in 1934 and also created lighting for ASEA during the 1940s. His work combined carefully selected materials with simple, well-proportioned forms, with particular attention given to the quality and distribution of light. Model “E1149” was designed in the late 1940s and examples are documented with both the ASEA Belysning mark and the engraved model number.
The beauty of this table lamp lies in its simple combination of wood, brass and fabric. The central stem is made of fluted stained wood and has a tapered shape, with the narrow vertical grooves adding texture to its surface. The warm colour of the wood contrasts with the circular brass base below, which has a low, slightly raised profile and gives the lamp a stable foundation. The pairing of wood and brass creates an interesting visual effect, where the organic and traditional character of the wood meets the more polished appearance of the metal. A broad cylindrical fabric shade completes the design and balances the narrow stem with its generous horizontal shape. When illuminated, the fabric filters the light into a warm, atmospheric glow while bringing out the different colours and textures of the materials.
Model “E1149” shows Bergström’s ability to give a relatively simple table lamp character through proportion and material rather than unnecessary detail. The compact design works particularly well on a desk, side table or cabinet, where it provides soft ambient light while remaining a strong decorative object. With its combination of warm wood, brass and diffused illumination, the lamp is an elegant example of Swedish lighting design from the 1940s.

Hans-Agne Jakobsson was one of the central figures of Swedish lighting design during the post-war decades. After training as both a carpenter and architect, he founded his own company in Markaryd in 1951, where he developed lighting that softened the harsher qualities of electric illumination through carefully designed shades, natural materials and restrained forms. Model “G43” reflects this approach through a particularly light and minimal construction.
The lamp is constructed around a slender white lacquered metal frame, creating a clear vertical axis that gives the piece a light presence. Three thin metal rods create the better part of the stem, spreading outward at the base, each ending in a small rounded foot, while their narrow proportions keep the structure visually unobtrusive. The stem is interrupted by two sections wrapped in brown leather, introducing warmth and texture to the otherwise precise metal construction. A large conical fabric shade sits at the top, its broad proportions creating a strong contrast with the exceptionally slender frame below. The shade becomes the visual volume of the design and filters the light through its fabric surface, producing a soft, warm glow. The simple triangular profile of the shade is balanced by the three-legged base, giving the lamp a clear sense of proportion despite the minimal structure.
The “G43” is a particularly good example of Jakobsson’s ability to give simple lighting a distinct identity through proportion and material. Its narrow frame takes up very little visual and physical space, making it easy to position beside a sofa, lounge chair, or in a corner where a larger floor lamp could feel intrusive. The leather details and warm fabric shade add character to the restrained construction, resulting in a lamp that works equally well as a source of atmospheric light and as an elegant example of Swedish mid-century design.

Hans Bergström’s designs are just as scarce today as the information available on the Swedish designer, despite his undeniable quality of output. Guided by the mantra, “Light must be white and shine freely,” he designed and produced functional and modern fixtures that were intended to brighten up entire spaces. Bergström had a modernist approach based on quality and architectural precision, and was the favourite lighting designer of many fellow architects, among them Bruno Mathsson.
This table lamp is a strong example of Bergström and Ateljé Lyktan’s dedication to craftsmanship and understated sophistication. The lamp features a slender stem wrapped in a rich toned leather, introducing warmth and tactile interest that contrasts beautifully with the polished brass elements. The circular brass base anchors the lamp with stability while maintaining a grounded presence. The careful detailing, such as the clean transition between the leather and metal components, reflects Ateljé Lyktan’s meticulous approach to design. The pairing of medius highlights the Scandinavian appreciation for honest materials, celebrating their natural textures and patina over time. The overall silhouette is graceful and minimal, yet it conveys a sense of sculptural presence through its timeless shape.
This lamp offers an inviting balance between practicality and decorative elegance, serving as a striking accent next to a lounge chair, sofa, or on a desk. With its emphasis on clarity of form and a refined use of materials, it exemplifies the quality craftsmanship at the heart of Swedish mid century design.

ASEA, founded in 1883, was a Swedish electrotechnical company that became an important part of the country’s electrical industry. The company began developing lighting for Swedish homes in the early 20th century, with its lighting production particularly prolific from the 1930s through the 1960s. This five-armed chandelier from circa 1950s represents a beautiful example of Swedish lighting.
This chandelier is constructed from an elegant metal frame with five arms arranged symmetrically around the centre. Long cords descend from the upper section before flowing outward to support the individual light points, creating an open structure with a strong vertical rhythm. Each brass arm terminates in a dark conical shade holder that continues into a tapered fabric shade. The contrast between the metal and the broad shades gives the lamp much of its character. The shades widen towards their open upper edges and are angled slightly outward, forming a flower-like arrangement around the centre. The opal glass that constructs the shades softens the light into a warm glow that has the power to balance the sharper quality of the dark metal elements. Above, through a simple black canopy, twisted cords ensure stability while giving the chandelier a light appearance despite its size. The symmetrical arrangement keeps the five shades separated, distributing the light evenly around the fixture.
The best qualities of Swedish mid-century lighting are often found in the combination of atmospheric illumination, disciplined construction and distinctive design details, all clearly represented in this ASEA chandelier. Its form gives it considerable presence without creating a visually heavy mass below the ceiling, making it particularly effective above a dining table or at the centre of a living area.

In the annals of mid-century modern design, the Swedish designer and architect, Gunnar Asplund stood out as a luminary, and his delicately sculptural creations, such as this "GA9" wall lamp, epitomises the era's sophistication and functional beauty. Erik Gunnar Asplund is celebrated as the godfather of functionalist design in Sweden. His meticulous attention to detail and penchant for marrying form with function is evident in this wall lamp.
This model emphasises geometric simplicity and clarity of form. The “GA9” appears to be inspired by a droplet or floating jellyfish. The mouth blown glass with bubbles creates an intricate play between light and shadow, giving the appearance of light travelling through water. The construction of this model is ingenious, with a bent arm holding the socket in the centre of the luminaire, and another arm supporting the shade. The black metal bends organically into a sinuous form, while the back-plate has a square shape. Pairing the geometric elements with the more organic ones shows Asplund’s great eye for design that was well ahead of his time. The glass shade has a faint violet tone, visible when the light is turned off. The atmospheric glow makes sure to enhance its surroundings, which is the most basic and fundamental of all lighting principles. Asplund’s life and work served as inspiration to a number of Scandinavian design luminaries, such as lifelong friend and mentee Alvar Aalto, as well as Erik Bryggman and Arne Jacobsen.
An acronym for Allmänna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget (“General Swedish Electrical Limited Company”), ASEA was a Swedish manufacturer of electrical products and industrial infrastructure. The company endures in the hearts of design lovers for their lighting collections, and this “GA9” Gunnar Asplund lamp demonstrates why.

ASEA, founded in 1883, was a Swedish company that became an important part of the country’s electrical industry. Its production extended across a wide range of equipment, including lighting, and its long manufacturing history placed it firmly within Sweden’s development of lighting design. This hanging lamp, produced in the 1950s, combines the functional character associated with Scandinavian mid-century lighting with an unusually expressive metal construction.
The lamp has a striking composition built from two slender brass stems that descend vertically before terminating into two dark conical metal shades angled upward and outward on either side of the central structure. Above them, a broad metal sheet extends horizontally, creating a striking contrast with the narrow vertical supports. The sheet has a gently curved profile, with its outer edges lifting upward. Its light-coloured underside reflects the illumination from the two conical shades below, producing a warm, indirect glow that highlights the material. The contrast between the dark cones, golden brass and pale upper reflector gives the lamp a particularly graphic appearance. Two black cords continue above the brass stems, maintaining the slender vertical lines of the construction. The combination of forms gives the lamp a distinctive appearance while keeping the overall structure remarkably light. The open space between the different elements is an important part of the design, allowing the individual components to remain clearly visible while creating a balanced composition.
The most appealing aspect of this ASEA ceiling lamp is the way its unconventional construction creates both atmospheric lighting and a strong decorative presence. Its expressive geometry makes it a particularly interesting example of Swedish mid-century lighting, offering something more individual than a conventional pendant or chandelier. This lamp is suitable for a living room, dining area or other space in need of a statement piece.
