Danish Beech Wood Corner Bench with Woven Paper cord Seat, Denmark 1940s (sold)

$0.00

This mid-century corner bench is a stunning example of the famous practical and comfortable designs of Danish cabinetmakers that defined mid-20th century modern seating. The Danish cabinetmakers focused on minimalist design executed by expertly skilled craftsmen and materials.

When thinking about custom, sustainable, or heirloom quality furniture, the materials used are as important as the design itself. This bench is made of solid beech, which is known to be excellent for structural woodwork. Danish cabinetmakers knew this very well, which is why it is a returning wood for the era’s best furniture. A little-known fact is that the word ‘book’ originates from the Old Norse ‘bók’, which in its primary sense meant ‘beech’. Joiners knew how to use its strength and pliability, which is evident in the case of this model. With its horizontal spindle backrest and legs with multiple stretchers, the structure is very straightforward, both in a figurative and literal sense. While the beech frame is eye-catching in itself, the woven paper cord seat is equally attention worthy. The braided paper cord is incredibly durable, and as natural as the wood it was woven around. As the name implies, it is a product of Denmark, and it became an important material in the Danish Modern period of the 1940s and 50s. It was favoured by many designers, including Hans J. Wegner, Finn Juhl, and Kaare Klint.

This seven-seater bench’s simplicity and honest elegance combined with mid-century Danish modernism is an exceptional piece of furniture thanks to its materials and craftsmanship. The woven seating gives it a warm and cosy feel and while staying very functional. This bench is one of those rare pieces that adapt to the environment.
