Mid-century wicker magazine rack by Franco Campo and Carlo Graffi from Italy. 

This stylish magazine rack was made by the Italian architects and designers Franco Campo and Carlo Graffi. Their background in architecture is well reflected in the shapes and lines of this piece. The airy and light feel of the organic cane, and the more modern feel of the dark steel creates a great balance. The twist of the two iron pipes above the lap of the rack adds a nifty detail to the piece. The wickerwork of this rack is exceptionally well-executed and retains its beautiful, organic colour. The cane is carefully wrapped around the steel frame, highlighting the mottled colour and pattern of the rattan skin.  

Wicker furniture, such as this magazine rack, have both functional and visual advantages. The light and airy wickerwork looks more natural and organic, which in turn complements a wide range of interior styles and can soften a minimalistic, modern look.

In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Rattan has some minor losses. Metal has minimal marks and discoloration.

About the designer:

The Italian duo, Franco Campo and Carlo Graffi, were course mates at the Politecnico di Torino and were studying under the famous designer, Carlo Mollino. Following their graduation in 1950, they collaborated with Professor Mollino on architecture and design projects. In Campo and Graffi’s earlier works, the influence of Mollino is evident with their use of supine curves and organic materials. In 1956 they started producing furniture under the brand Home. Following the opening of their ground-breaking furniture atelier, their works were often published in trade magazines. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Campo and Graffi’s designs were highly influential in the field of design. ~H.
