Guillerme et Chambron "Grand Repos" Sofa with Three Cushions for Le Mobilier Votre Maison, France 1950s (sold)
This oaken “Grand Repos” sofa deserve its title of iconic, both in terms of quality and design. This model visually represents the very reason Votre Maison, the French duo’s company significantly influenced French design history.
Guillerme and Chambron are known for their high-quality, solid oak furniture and the “Grand Repos” models are the most distinctive thanks to their spindle backrests. With a solid wooden frame, the support for the back consists of eleven, symmetrically arranged wooden spindles extending upwards. The backrest is slightly tilted for comfort, aided by the generous seat and back cushions. The three circular cushions break the mostly straight lines of the sofa’s structure without drawing attention away from it. The creative overarching spindles create an almost throne-like effect. The curvature of the arms follows the lines of the back, and gently curve outwards. “Grand Repos” stands for “great rest” in French, and with a well-though out, elegant design, this sofa is sure to provide exactly that.
The elegant, light bouclé upholstery of the seat and round back cushions beautifully compliments the light oak frame. The back cushions are secured with loops that encompass the back spindles, ensuring that the cushions stay in position. The bottom consists of two cushions framed by the curved wooden armrests which extend to the front legs. The woodworking truly shows the overall quality of this sofa, the frame is refined and the attention to the smallest detail shows the design and manufacturing skills of Robert Guillerme and Jacques Chambron.

This rare oak settee is a delightful piece even if measured against the other seating models in the repertoire of the French designer duo, Robert Guillerme and Jacques Chambron. This model truly deserves adjectives such as unique or even iconic, both in terms of quality and design. It visually represents the very reason Votre Maison, the French duo’s company significantly influenced French design history.
From every angle, this settee’s design has unique solutions that are unmistakable. Starting with the duo’s trademark oak frame to the sculptural legs and backrests, while also featuring details that are one-of-a-kind. Such a detail is the curving seat and its joinery, that shows expert craftsmanship and creativity. The curve also serves as a table, adding much functionality and practicality to the sculptural look. The unusual seat resembles a slatted bench, while the two, individual backrests break the flat surfaces and emerge like thrones. The spindles enhance this appearance, especially with the longer, middle spindles that also serve as back legs. The armrests and legs are sculpted with precision to serve a double purpose: an aesthetic role, and a functional one. The corner segment adds a lot of openness to the design, preventing it from looking heavy. The curving shape and thick, comfortable seat and back cushions provide plenty of comfort, therefore this settee is perfect for cosy lounging.
Guillerme et Chambron’s work at Votre Maison not only represents the fusion of function and form, but also exemplifies the mid-century modern aesthetic - which they played a pivotal role in shaping. Their emphasis on quality craftsmanship and the use of noble materials like oak has undeniably left a lasting imprint in the world of furniture design, solidifying their legacy in the French design landscape during the mid-century era. Together, they defined new furnishings concepts. As this brilliant settee shows, well-crafted structures, polished wood and thick cushions created the now world-famous reputation of their seating designs.

This upholstered French daybed exemplifies the refined elegance and sculptural minimalism that defined much of the late 20th century’s design innovation. French designers of this era often embraced organic silhouettes and thoughtful craftsmanship to create pieces that combined understated luxury with everyday functionality.
The daybed’s asymmetrical form with the back sweeping upward in a single, fluid motion creates a sense of movement and balance, echoing the era’s fascination with soft geometry and architectural grace. Its restrained profile ensures that while sculptural, it does not overwhelm a space, instead it offers a sophisticated yet inviting presence. The plush, textured fabric adds warmth and tactility, complementing the bed’s clean lines and gently contoured frame. Resting on a dark wooden base, the contrast between the luminous fabric and the rich, grounded bottom creates a striking visual interplay, giving the impression that the daybed floats effortlessly above its support. This tension between weight and lightness was a hallmark of many late 20th-century French interiors, where designers sought to merge comfort, practicality, and artistry into a single, cohesive form. The quality of construction, evident in the seamless upholstery and precise joinery, speaks to the French traditional craftsmanship.
As a versatile design statement, this daybed works beautifully as a standalone focal point or integrated into a broader arrangement of contemporary and vintage furnishings. This balance of function and artistry reflects the 20th century desire to elevate utilitarian objects into expressions of aesthetic refinement.

In the 1970s, the power of television sparked a profound shift in households and a sofa became a "must-have". Sofas became the core of the "Les Contemporains" collection at French retailer, Roche Bobois, with this rare model in their famed repertoire.
This stunning three-seater sofa stands on a plinth in polished stainless steel. This design feature immediately sets the modern edge of this model, making the contrast of its materials’ texture, colour, and look the main design element. The seat and back form a permanently reclined angle, with six individual cushions comprising the seat and back. The brown suede fabric covers the cushions with deep stitches enhancing the fabric’s luxurious qualities. The contrast between the brushed steel and suede is stark, which creates tension. Still, the sofa is in perfect visual balance thanks to the carefully measured proportions. In the absence of arms, the design remains very open and light despite the characteristic materials. The design is commonly attributed to Jacques Charpentier, who was a French decorator and editor. He studied at the Boulle School and graduated in 1945 after which he began his career by opening a workshop in Paris, where from the 1960s, he designed stainless steel sofas. By the end of 1970, his company had nearly sixty employees.
This Roche Bobois edition sofa model has a unique upholstery with patinated suede in a rich brown colour that lends a stylish, modern look that is reminiscent of the 1970s. In combination with the steel base, this model commands the space it is placed in, and is sure to draw attention.

The two sides of the sofa are joined in the middle at an angle that creates an appealing curve that further highlights the sculpted back. French industrial designer Oliver Mourgue obtained his degree in Interior Design at the prestigious École Boulle, from where he went on to pursue his passion in furniture design at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. After training in Finland and Sweden, he then began his collaboration with Airborne International, one of France’s most successful and influential design companies of the modernist era.
In 1965 he designed the ‘Djinn Series’, inspired by the figure of the ‘djinni’ (genie), a mystical creature of Arabian fairy tales capable of morphing into human or animal form. This fluid uncertainty is clearly visible in the elegant shape of the daybed, where curved edges and softly folded ends connect seamlessly with the low-slung seating. The carefully crafted ergonomic design moulds perfectly to a resting human figure. Without distinctive breaks and different components, the daybed suggests effortless comfort - its relaxed form inviting the person for moments of unhurried rest, aligning with the decade’s easing of societal mores. The strapped rectangular pillow at the headrest is a unique complement that adds visual interest and breaks the flat surface of the piece. This daybed has been reupholstered in a premium fabric, which guarantees outstanding comfort and softness. The light colour of the upholstery, covering every part of the daybed also contributes to its uniqueness, truly making it a statement piece in any interior.
The ‘Djinn Series’ gained immense fame after the ‘Djinn Chair’ (1965) was featured in Stanley Kubrick’s film 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). The vivid red chairs - used to furnish the sterile Hilton lobby of Space Station Five - granted a truly futuristic yet functional ambiance for the room. With an eye-catching form, this daybed is a visually outstanding piece that will transform any environment with its bold character.
