A pair of "Näyttely 2" Lounge Chairs from Huonekaluliike Majander Oy, Finland 1930s (sold)

$0.00

Näyttely translates to “exhibition” which refers to the origin of these chairs. The furniture store, Majander Oy, held exhibitions to introduce the furniture models created by its designers, including this model of the 1930s.

From the 1930s, Finland’s international reputation for great design was established, thanks to the work of Finnish architects and designers, who had been designing innovative furniture and new forms of glassware throughout the decade – designs still popular today. With a classic shape paired with modern design elements, this pair combines the best design characteristics of the 1930s, and the result is a timeless aesthetic. The design recalls the chic Art Deco club chairs of the era. While initially the chair style was called a ‘comfortable chair’, it soon began to be known by its now famous moniker because of its popularity among clubs, letting customers sink into them with a drink. These chairs provide the same comfort thanks to their thick enveloping backs and seat cushions covered in an elegant, light fabric. The upholstery’s lines section the chairs visually, adding depth to the design. The humane modernism of Finnish design is apparent, and is paired with great craftsmanship.

Finnish design began to develop alongside that of its neighbours, Sweden and Denmark, joining to create a new ‘Scandinavian Design’ brand. The ‘Scandinavian Style’, the use of colours, materials, the combination of crafts with industrial production, the obvious influence of the organic, all created a stir of excitement that is experiencing a well deserved renaissance in the 21st century.
