Bergboms Brass Floor Lamp with Upholstered Shade, Sweden 1940s (sold)

Bergboms Brass Floor Lamp with Upholstered Shade, Sweden 1940s (sold)

$0.00

‎This beautiful early mid-century floor lamp combines a classical shape with carefully thought out proportions and Swedish craftsmanship. The circular construction, cut by straight lines and sharp angles defines this model. This duality is also echoed by this lamp’s curves and taunt lines.

The floor lamp features an adjustable head, therefore, it is highly customizable. The base and foot are made of brass, which was the preferred material for the most famous floor lamps of the era as it is enduring and - as this lamp shows - develops a beautiful patina over time. The brass body has an appealing, patinated golden colour that stands out even more when the lamp is lit. The asymmetrical conical lampshade is upholstered in a premium fabric and is most likely a later addition to the lamp. Thanks to the adjustable head and its shape, this lamp concentrates and directs the light very effectively. In line with the Functionalist trend of the time, the designer abandoned ornamentation in favour of form. Nonetheless, the warmth and beauty inherent in Swedish design is maintained, as well as high-quality craftsmanship.

The manufacturer, Bergboms—also called Bergbom & Co AB—was a modernist, Swedish lighting manufacturer established in 1940. It was a prominent Swedish lighting firm which manufactured both their own designs and those of international designers such as Bernard Schottlander and Greta Magnusson-Grossman.‎
