Carved Natural Wood Chair from the François Catroux Collection, France 20th century (sold)

$0.00

There are records that Catroux often exclaimed “C’est très jolie!” and such when he encountered an exceptional piece of furniture. This one-of-a-kind chair hails from the private collection of the world-famous French interior designer whose eye for outstanding design is evident in this chair.

The carved edges of this chair immediately stand out. The design has the roughness of brutalism, the natural appeal of organic design, and even the charm of folk furniture. The triangle shaped cuts on the back, seat and legs are very distinctive with lightly rounded edges to prevent the triangles from looking like spikes. As a result, the chair has a gentle look that shows the careful craftsmanship put into the woodwork. The chair is made of 9 separate wood planks assembled by screws, which is an inherently traditional way. This uncomplicated assembling lets the carving prevail. The solid wood’s patina and the exposed screws all add to the rustic charm of this chair. This chair’s appreciation of rustic simplicity and craftsmanship has never completely gone out of style, evidenced by the late François Catroux’s work and collection as well.

Adding pieces, like this carved chair to a modern interior not only creates a diverse and interesting aesthetic, it also reminds that perfection cannot be reached and perhaps should not even be the goal. Instead, recognizing the beauty of the imperfect created by nature and reformed by a craftsman can bring happiness into everyday life.
