‎‎For mid-century designers, materials were used for their own distinct; often a piece of furniture would combine only two materials or colours – creating tension and harmony without fuss or superfluous ornament and this armchair is a perfect example of this sentiment.

Mid-century Danish designers generally approached light and dark to create a fusion of the two to reach a sleek, streamlined, and balanced look. Natural wood details frequently came with contrasting materials and textures as these armchairs show. The design is all about cohesion, creating a harmonious look with the use of intentional contrast. The standout feature of this pair is without a doubt the sculpted solid oak arms that emerge from the soft sheepskin. These elegant organic lines create a striking silhouette, dictating the overall aesthetic. This pair of armchairs falls into the category of the so-called biomorphic mid-century, that describes the furniture that relished in organic, curved, smooth surfaces, design that was moulded into the shapes of natural occurrences. This was an accessible and lively contrast to the more austere machine aesthetic of the Bauhaus therefore maintaining the traditions of Danish cabinetmaking. The beautiful sheepskin upholstery gives these chairs a soft, cosy look while also accentuating the curved back and the oak elements. A classic tell for Danish design harkening back to the 1950s are tapered wood legs, a feature that’s endured, giving the design a timeless, sophisticated feel.

A hallmark of Danish mid-century design - and therefore of this pair - is its purposeful nature: a design with features that feel intentional with nothing out of place. The result is cohesion that’s calming, punctuated by striking contrast of materials and shapes.
