These four artisanal chairs preserve the best visual qualities of the Baroque and Jacobean Revival styles. This specific style came back into fashion when large country houses were being remodelled in the Baroque taste towards the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century.
Composed of two main materials, these side chairs take advantage of the classic pairing of solid wood and leather. The patinated oak and cognac leather complement each other and provide an elemental, timeless look, which is why these chairs - unlike their more ornamented contemporaries - still fit into modern interiors. The leather is fitted with upholstery tacks on each chair, a time-consuming technique that is traditionally done by hand. This is evident as the nails are slightly unevenly placed, making each chair one-of-a-kind. This rustic quality created by the metal dome nails sets the aesthetic while also framing the leather backs and wood seats. At the same time, the wood’s role as a decorative element is equally important to the design, with hand carvings on the “ears” and on the legs. The sled bases are perfect surfaces to showcase the carvings in the oak. Over the following decades, Prou received prestigious commissions ranging from luxury ocean liner cabins to the council chamber of the Comptoir d’Escompte de Paris, while also serving as director and professor at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs.

About the designer:
Robert Guillerme graduated in 1934 from the École Boulle where he excelled in architecture and furniture design. After the Second World War he moved to Lille, in the north of France, where he decorated homes and designed furniture for the well regarded Rogier workshops.
In 1948, Guillerme was joined by his long-time friend, decorator Jacques Chambron in Lille. The following year Guillerme and Chambron met master cabinetmaker Émile Dariosecq, owner of a woodworking shop and the company Votre Maison was born. Together, they defined and imposed a new furniture concept. Thanks to their distinctive creativity, originality, and quality, the Votre Maison quickly became well-known.
The Votre Maison marked the history of French design. Guillerme drew the furniture designs while Chambron played the part of salesman, welcoming and advising clients. The power duo was complemented by Dariosecq, whose workshop took charge of the manufacturing. Together, they defined new furnishings concepts. Well-crafted chair back, polished wood and thick cushions make the reputation of their armchairs and sofas. Votre Maison continued to produce furniture right into the 20th century, with Jacques’ son Hervé Chambron, a designer and graduate of the École Boulle, having taken the reins in 1983.

Dining room chair “S34” has the playful and majestic characteristics typical of Pierre Chapo's emblematic creations. Asymmetrical, yet perfectly balanced, this model belongs with the designer’s famous “Sfax” table.
The cross-legged base corresponds to the design of the backrest, which is slightly offset from the middle. Made from Chapo's favourite wood, elm, this chair has a rustic style with architectural precision, which comes as no surprise, as Pierre Chapo trained as an architect in Paris. The slightly more rounded edges show that this chair is an older, authentic version of the “S34” model. The cross-legged base matches the back that is slightly placed out of the middle, enhancing the masterful asymmetry that defines the design. About the designer:
Pierre Chapo, born in Paris in July 1927, was initially interested in becoming a professional painter. However, after a chance meeting with a shipbuilder who introduced him to wood and wood crafts, Chapo changed his focus and decided to study architectural studies at the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
After graduation, Chapo and his wife, the sculptor and painter Nicole Lormier, started to travel extensively through Scandinavia and Central America. Among the many places the couple visited was the home and studio of Frank Lloyd Wright in Taliesin West. A visit that had a lasting influence on Chapo’s future work and designs.
