Set of Six Oak and Rush Chairs with Sculptural Legs, Europe 1940s (sold)

Set of Six Oak and Rush Chairs with Sculptural Legs, Europe 1940s (sold)

$0.00

This beautiful early mid-century dining set of six combines historic elements with a more modern, organic design. Using natural materials and traditional techniques, the resulting aesthetic is timeless and ever eye-catching.

The set’s aesthetic is defined by the front legs and the expertly woven rush seats and backs. The waving technique is quite elaborate, especially on the backs. The double-layered rush is woven in a cross shape, going through the decorative circular gap. The seats showcase the diagonal cross pattern commonly referred to as the “rush weave”. The lower structures are composed of expertly sculpted legs with box stretchers and ball feet. The front stretchers are expertly sculpted as well. This historic style is visibly influenced by the Tudor style Jacobean legs that are heavily decorated straight legs. They are generally bulb-turned, like these chairs. Turned chairs — sometimes called thrown chairs or spindle chairs — represent a style of Elizabethan or Jacobean turned furniture that had a vogue in late 16th and early 17th century England, New England and Holland. The technique was carried on to the 20th century and was widespread in Europe as well, where craftsmen created durable pieces for various interiors and purposes.

Each of these dining chairs was created by exceptionally skilled - most likely French - craftsmen who made sure the structures are durable, sturdy and functional, while their expert craftsmanship and use of high-quality wood and rush make each piece a beautiful design heirloom.
