As a descendant of the modernist movement of the late 19th and the first half of the 20th century, Brutalism favoured celebrating the imperfect appeal of handmade items. These solid wood chairs have an elemental look aided by the expert construction technique and distinctive “T” shape.

With a robust organic form and an earth-toned palette, this pair of chairs is the embodiment of Brutalism. The chairs have a refined rawness, and with their warm-toned and slightly asymmetrical bodies, they are greatly-balanced pieces. Sensitive touches enliven the brutalist design, visible in the careful craftsmanship. Despite the brutalist characteristics, the chairs still appear sleek and streamlined which is the result of the characteristic T-shaped backrests and the clean edges. The wood’s stunning pattern and textural variety is visible throughout each chair, letting its natural expressiveness guide the design. Instead of many elaborate pieces, brutalist furniture is generally constructed from fewer but larger pieces. Accordingly, these chairs also utilize larger wooden pieces joined by traditional techniques without any screws or visible pegs. Through its eccentric geometries and expressive forms, - brutalist furniture design’s best qualities - this pair is perfect for a contemporary interior. The tripod legs add even more design edge to the look, with the back leg extending to form the back as well. The French designer generation active during the mid-20th century created some of the most iconic wooden furniture designs of the whole century thanks to how successfully they managed to merge traditional craftsmanship and materials with an essentially modern approach to design.

In the 21st century, unlike in architecture, brutalist furniture design has been making a comeback, making 20th century pieces, like these chairs, rare and valuable pieces of the movement.
