Belgian Brutalist Oak Dining Table, Belgium 1970s (sold)

‎This Belgian table was created with considerable technical expertise and holds a natural expression with its airy and organic design, which is dominated by the natural beauty of the material and the creative use of the tenon and mortise joinery.

In Belgium, from the 1960s throughout the 70s, a renewed interest in design creativity led to the emergence of new forms and typologies, and of a new, more dynamic relationship between user, furniture, and the domestic interior. Creative, unconventional design was often expensive, while affordable design was frequently unadventurous. This table manages to be creative while utilizing an essentially simple, but versatile forms and material. Oak has been the preferred wood for brutalist furniture since the early 20th century, and as this model shows why: the unadorned surfaces showcase the wood’s diverse shades and patterns. The large tabletop, while quite minimalistic, is perfectly crafted with carefully selected wood pieces and subtly rounded edges. Visually, the tabletop serves as the base for the legs. Its sober look supports the lower structure that consists of the sculpted legs and the crossbar connecting them. The wide, gently splayed legs’ shape resembles a wishbone, a crescent-shaped clavicle, which is a delightful design choice. The wooden bar is connected to them by tenon and mortise joints. Albeit the table is made of solid wood, the oak’s light colour and the open design create an airy feeling, while also retaining an overall impression of strength and durability.

Brutalist design is perhaps the best way to showcase the elemental beauty of any wood. Oak has been the defining material for European brutalist pieces for centuries for this reason, as the oak’s pattern is beloved for its versatility.
