Swedish Brass Torchiere Floor Lamp, Sweden 1930s (sold)
Swedish Brass Torchiere Floor Lamp, Sweden 1930s (sold)
The “torchiere” is one of the most popular and recognizable types of floor lamps. The name is derived from the French word for "torch" and it is identifiable by its upright, torch-like shape, with the lighting fixture pointing upward at the end of the column. This model has traces of Scandinavian Art Deco, otherwise known as “Swedish Grace” style and early signs of Modernism is well.
Swedish Grace, with its simplified lines and lack of excessive ornamentation, was a counter reaction to the earlier Jugend’s free flowing, Art Nouveau style. Accordingly, this lamp is characterized by its streamlined classicism, simplified forms, and gently contrasting colours. The head of this torchiere floor lamp resembles the shape of a plate. The brass body has a beautiful, patinated colour with gradual blending from dark on the top to golden brass on the lower tube and column. The base and the torchiere are very dark, thanks to which the tube is framed visually. The wide and open shade assures the light’s even distribution, allowing it to brighten a large area. The durable body and round base provides good stability and timelessness. In line with the trend of the time, the designer abandoned ornamentation in favour of form. Nonetheless, the warmth and beauty inherent in Swedish design is maintained, as well as high-quality craftsmanship.
Adding illumination to a living space with this stylish floor lamp will not only improve the ambience, it will also provide useful task lighting for those late nights. Apart from the aesthetics, the quality of this floor lamp is also true to its Swedish heritage.
