Tessellated "Sylvie" Chair by Rie and Yiouri Augousti, France 1989 (sold)
Tessellated "Sylvie" Chair by Rie and Yiouri Augousti, France 1989 (sold)
The Sylvie chair is an iconic design by R & Y Augousti. One of their very first designs, this ethereal piece is a statement in any space. This model has been photographed in numerous celebrity homes, including designer, Alexander Wang's New York apartment designed by Ryan Korban.
Acclaimed design duo Ria & Yiouri Augousti have established themselves since the 1990s as pioneers of modern-vintage style through their luxurious art-deco inspired collections. The Paris based label has distinguished themselves since their launch, primarily as a result of their use of unique materials. This “Sylvie” chair is a draft model from 1989 making it very rare. With a tessellated or eggshell textured wood body, this R&Y Augousti Sylvie accent chair has an undulating tendril backrest, domed seat, and tapered legs. The body is sculptural, each element flows into one another creating a flowing look. The coconut shell inlay has a highly textured look and highlights the smooth curves well. The maximalism and organicity the designers are known for is apparent in every line, especially the tendrils the back and back legs are composed of. The front legs have the same look, while the seat has a dome-like look that shows off the inlay beautifully. The manufacturer's brass plaque is placed underneath the seat.
From being used in Star Trek to appearing in my acclaimed interior designs, this Sylvie chair is a true icon. Furthermore, like all of R&Y Augousti’s furniture designs, this chair was handcrafted by skilled artisans, ultimately making it even more unique.

About the designer:
R&Y Augousti was founded in 1989 by husband-wife duo Ria & Yiouri Augousti. Their artistic backgrounds brought them together as innovators in their field by reviving the artisanal techniques of shagreen and other exotic materials that were predominant in the Art Deco period of the 1930s.
Through their mix of vintage and contemporary design their furniture and home accessories brand were met with worldwide praise. From a debut collection for the luxurious Hotel Crillon in Paris, to exclusive collections for luxury stores like Barneys New York & Bergdorf Goodman, they finally opened their flagship store on the famous Rue Du Bac in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, France. From this they began to work closely with worldwide famous interior designers, architects and celebrities to create custom pieces for their homes and projects all within keeping to the Augousti universe.
Although shagreen is their signature DNA, R&Y Augousti are known as pioneers of pattern mixes of exotic materials of shagreen, shell, parchment, eel-skin, semi-precious stones, snakeskins and metal. Their stunning patterns are identifiable by their worldwide clientele.
