Brutalist Oak Coffee Table with Triangular Legs, Europe ca 1950s (sold)
Brutalist Oak Coffee Table with Triangular Legs, Europe ca 1950s (sold)
Crafted from a nice warm brown oak wood, this table in many ways epitomizes the Brutalist movement, a design philosophy rooted in raw, unadorned materials and a functionalist ethos.
This piece has a startling rawness, but with its warm-toned, hand carved body, it is a greatly-balanced piece. Sensitive touches enliven the brutalist design, visible in the careful craftsmanship. Through its eccentric geometries and expressive forms, - brutalist furniture design’s best qualities - this table is exceptional. The design features a round top that exudes organic charm and warmth. The natural wood grain and texture of the solid oak add depth and character to the piece. The bold, sculptural base further enhances the Brutalist style, with its geometric and angular forms. With its distinctive structure, this table epitomizes the era’s designers’ research for new systems of joinery, in which the material and the design would be the leading factors in achieving stability, durability, and of course, an aesthetically pleasing outcome. This can be easily traced in the lower structure: the tripod legs are connected by stretchers forming a triangle. The screws joining the parts are left visible, enhancing the crude impression that establishes the brutalist aesthetic. The design of this model evidently had to be studied very precisely: the proportions had to be finely tuned to successfully combine a perfect angle of inclination between the legs and the top, also to calculate the degree that each leg needed to be shaped in relation to the top, where all the legs were joined.
The use of the sizeable pieces of solid wood with a beautiful grain, gives this table a natural, elemental feeling. The visible joints and hand carved details on the legs are also wonderful features and very typical for the work of craftsmen who gave wooden pieces even more personality through their high level craft.
