Model "3041" Stoneware Table Lamp by Einar Johansen for Søholm Stentøj, Denmark ca 1960s (sold)
Model "3041" Stoneware Table Lamp by Einar Johansen for Søholm Stentøj, Denmark ca 1960s (sold)
This handmade 1960s table lamp was designed by the brilliant Einar Johansen and produced by Søholm Stentøj (stoneware). The manufactory was one of the most revered names in Danish ceramics. It was founded on the Baltic island of Bornholm in 1835, and produced ceramics until the factory closed in 1996.
Johansen was employed at Søholm in the period between 1958-1968, and designed several, beautiful stoneware and pottery, including his famous blue glazed stoneware. These model “3041” table lamps have a particularly lovely glaze, thick, deep, and full of colour nuances. The denim glazed bodies have blue and dark brown tones that are characteristic of the manufactory once based on the Baltic island of Bornholm. The design is lovely, with a clear focus on the ceramic bodies. The design features incised rings and a pine cone/leaf pattern that enhances the organic aesthetic. Interestingly, this model was also made with an unglazed neck, however, this version is rarer. These table lamps are taller than most of the other Johansen models, therefore the patterns stand out even more. The ribbed lampshades further elongate the bodies visually, while their light colour complements the ceramic bases. The overall aesthetic is essentially Nordic modern thanks to the combination of interesting material choices and a design that is inspired by nature.
The lamps have the manufacturer’s mark etched clearly on their bases. Danish designer, Einar Johansen, created many wonderful designs for Søholm Stentøj as well as in his own studio. He originally trained as a painter at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, but changed his mind and became a ceramicist.
