Persian Crackle Glaze Table Lamp by Marianne Starck for Michael Andersen & Søn, Denmark 1960s (sold)

$0.00

German-born Marianne Starck (1938–2007) was one of Denmark’s leading ceramic designers in the 20th century. Starck was art director of the Danish pottery company Michael Andersen & Søn from 1955 until the business was sold in 1993. While with Michael Andersen & Søn, she produced beautiful studio pieces like this table lamp, and her work is some of the finest to have come out of the company.

When it comes to adding a touch of sophistication and warmth to your living spaces, few things rival the timeless appeal of ceramic table lamps. The designer’s versatile pieces not only serve as functional sources of light but also double as exquisite decor elements, seamlessly blending style with utility. This lamp features a Persian crackle glaze, which was developed at Michael Andersen & Søn in the 1930s by David Anderson. The body of the lamp narrows towards the top like a bottle, creating a traditional look. The lampshade’s shape contributes to this look as well, while also contrasting with the form of the decorative ceramic body. The fabric of the shade is seemingly textural with an elegant and stylish look that stands out even more when the lamp is lit. While this shape of table lamp is fairly common, Marianne Starck managed to make this lamp anything but typical, which shows both her design savvy and craftsmanship skill.

The overall design is lovely, with a clear focus on the ceramic body. The simplicity of the design allows the lamp to seamlessly integrate into various decor styles while commanding attention. Beyond the aesthetic appeal, it also offers practical benefits, serving as a focal point that draws the eye and anchors the room's visual narrative. This lamp is a true testament to Starck and her legacy.
