Three Seater Sofa with Stained Beech Legs, Denmark 20th century (sold)
Three Seater Sofa with Stained Beech Legs, Denmark 20th century (sold)
Designed in the early phase of what we know today as mid-century modern, this charming sofa is evidence of how traditional Danish craftsmanship was brought into modernism.
The sofa’s curving back and armrests are welcoming, and unmistakable of the era’s design inclinations. The rich texture of the cozy velour upholstery gives the sofa a modern edge while also enhancing the size of the seat and back, creating a luxurious look and feel. The sofa is decorated with a single, horizontal line of button tufting that gives depth to the design. The stained beech tapered legs pair well with the upholstery and balance out the curved edges of the body.
Danish modernist furniture designs, such as this sofa, became known for their sober character and unadorned elegance. Accordingly, the main decorative element is the design itself, aided by quality materials and meticulous craftsmanship. In combination with the clean styles of mid-century design, this sofa brings together the core characteristics of the style: gently rounded edges, solid wooden legs, and a generous fully upholstered body. The design also possesses an elegant cosy curviness, an aesthetic balance that is only seemingly easy to achieve, but this sofa exudes it.
