A Pair of "Birka" Chairs by Axel Einar Hjorth for Nordiska Kompaniet, Sweden 1930s (sold)
Architect and furniture designer Axel Einar Hjorth served as the lead designer for Sweden’s Nordiska Kompaniet department store from 1926 to 1938. Hjorth's aesthetic alludes to both the traditional simplicity of the common people and the radical aesthetics of international modernism. These “Birka” chairs are wonderful examples of this aesthetic.
The design of these pieces focuses on simple curvature and material quality. These chairs stand out with their clean lines and minimalist aesthetic, characteristic of Hjorth’s design philosophy. The solid wooden frame combines strength with refined simplicity. The backrests are made out of olive ash burl, a thick veneer highly valued for its striking swirly grain patterns and unique colours. The maple wood legs give the chair a sense of stability while adding a touch of architectural flair through their sleek and elongated nature, making them both functional and visually striking. Each chair demonstrates an intentional construction where the joinery and fittings related to traditional craftsmanship are emphasized. Thanks to the curvature of the backrests, the ergonomic design allows for a comfortable sitting experience. The seats of these chairs are upholstered in luxurious sheepskin, providing a warm and tactile contrast to the sturdy wooden frame. The plush texture of the sheepskin adds an element of comfort and softness to the design, enhancing its overall appeal. This choice of upholstery not only elevates the chair’s aesthetic but also reflects Hjorth’s attention to detail and his deep connection to nature and the materials he worked with.
A perfect fusion of form and function, these “Birka” chairs capture the essence of Scandinavian design: clean, elegant, and practical. It embodies Hjorth’s mastery in creating furniture that is both visually compelling and comfortable to use. Whether displayed in a living room or an office, the “Birka” chair model remains a timeless symbol of refined style and exceptional craftsmanship.
