‎‎‎Norwegian design reflects the country’s deep-rooted connection to nature, minimalist, yet elegant style and emphasis on functionality. “Lagom” is a Swedish and Norwegian word that loosely translates to ‘not too little and not too much’. While this can apply to many things, in lighting design it’s about finding balance and harmony. This set of lamps are beautiful examples of finding the balance between ornamentation and minimalism.

Like most light fixtures of the period, the design of these wall lamps assumes a more understated look, yet is coupled with decorative elements that add to the uniqueness of the model. With its nature-inspired organic look, this set is reminiscent of Finnish icons Paavo Tynell and Mauri Almari’s design language. Stemming from the base, resembling a delicate branch, the brass decorations are sculpted beautifully, a testament to the manufacturer’s expert skills. The shades are a lovely off-white fabric in a classic empire shape. The light, when diffused through the fabric material, casts a warm and inviting glow, creating an ambiance that is both timeless and comforting. The atmospheric light also gives the brass bodies a warm colour. Wall lamps such as these are beautiful examples of how simplicity, combined with thoughtful craftsmanship, can result in lighting fixtures that transcend their utilitarian purpose, becoming works of art in their own right. Today we consider the mid-century era a golden age for lighting design and craftsmanship, and for good reason.

At its most basic level, mid-century modern designs are known for juxtaposing sleek lines with organic shapes, and using new materials and manufacturing methods to re-imagine traditional pieces. This set of wall lamps is a perfect example of this, with a modern look that isn’t a complete departure from the past.
