German Oak Dining Table with Triangular Top, Germany 1960s (sold)

Organically shaped, clean-lined and elegantly simple are three terms that best describe this massive dining table. The evolution of mid-century design in postwar Germany was a direct consequence of accepting, continuing, and further developing the ideas of the predecessing movements. It was, in a way, a “softer” version of the modern movement by adopting natural, organic forms.

The distinctive triangular ‘guitar pick’ shape of this table is quite popular thanks to its functional and stylish look. While dining tables are furniture pieces that are generally associated with their functional role, exceptional mid-century modern models like this one manage to stand out next to their utilitarian role. This table’s curved shape and generous surface area make it a perfect dining table, while not compromising on aesthetics. The 19th century Biedermeier furniture design was based on utilitarian principles with a simple and elegant style, and mid-century modernism carried these principles well into the 20th century. The mid-century German style’s construction utilized the ideal of truth through materials. As a result, the wood grain was the key decorative element in the design. Following this ideal, this table’s top showcases the oak’s beautiful natural properties, including its versatile patterns and grain. The three custom-made legs further highlight and complement the top with their thick, round shape while also providing ample support. Thanks to its universally appealing material and impeccable craftsmanship, this dining table fits almost any design style. Its minimalist but eye-catching design allows it to match with similarly curved dining chairs, or with more rectangular ones for contrast.

The design draws from the beauty in nature, natural shapes and materials. True to its rich design heritage, this dining table is sure to enhance the daily lives of its users through its visually pleasing and functional design that is timeless in every sense of the word.
