The 1970s were a boom time in Italy, a decade of mass production and innovation when designers made huge quantities of furniture and sold it through department stores. As a result, exceptional pieces from the 1970s are in short supply. Most are still in Italy, with exceptions like these bamboo lounge chairs.
With their fresh colours and shiny surfaces, pieces from the 1970s are very appealing and photogenic. During the 20th century, bamboo enjoyed a few resurgences of popularity as it has always conjured up feelings of travel and pleasure. These lounge chairs are all that and more: they showcase a precision that was unachievable by methods of mass production, therefore there is the charm and quality that handcrafted pieces possess. This is most apparent in the arms with a dynamic, flowing curve. Each of the seven pieces stems from the same spot at the top, gradually increasing in size to form the armrests. The backs are also formed from individual pieces of bamboo, bent at their “hip” to create the reclined position of the backs. To enhance the sense of relaxed lounging, the chairs sit very low with two cushions comprising the seats. The upper seat and back cushions are upholstered in a floral, patterned fabric that further add to the cosy impression.
