Lisa Johansson-Pape "71-125" Ceiling Lamp for Stockmann Orno, Finland circa 1950s (sold)

Lisa Johansson-Pape "71-125" Ceiling Lamp for Stockmann Orno, Finland circa 1950s (sold)
Carin Lisa Johansson-Pape, was among the most significant Finnish lighting designers in the second half of the 1900s. She worked as the main designer at Stockmann Orno from the late 40s into the 60s, and alongside other icons like Yki Nummy.
The allure of 20th-century Finnish lighting continues to be sought after today, and this ceiling lamp exemplifies why that is. Johansson-Pape’s designs were always minimal, straightforward, and highly functional, often times combining materials such as glass, metal and acrylic. This ceiling lamp combines a sleek look with modern elements that results in a design with an equally timeless and contemporary feel. Opal glass, also known as milk glass, is made by adding opacifiers to the melt and was a popular choice in Finnish mid-century lighting models. In this piece, the opal glass is utilised to construct the lamp’s body, an organic round shape which diverges from the classic symmetrical sphere, to achieve a more natural and relaxed look. This results in a cosy effect as the lamp provides a great ambient glow. Johansson-Pape chose brass to go with the glass; the base which attaches to the ceiling, in addition to the finial-like tip of the piece are made out of the warm, golden material. The hues of the brass perfectly complement the white shade, when the lamp is turned both on and off.
As Johansson-Pape said: "A lamp is not the actual purpose, but more like an instrument. It must fulfil its purpose as a provider of light, but at the same time, it must also satisfy the aesthetic demands. A good light fixture must be simple, and its structure and function must be both neat and correct". There is no better proof of her commitment to this statement than this lamp.

With pieces inspired by nature and the tranquility of everyday life, Ilmari Tapiovaara was able to showcase designs that captured the essence of Finnish identity. In a region where darkness dominates much of the year, lighting offers more than illumination - it evokes warmth, optimism and emotional connection. In the case of this pair of sculptural table lamps made of painted metal layers, the comforting resemblance to the beloved character of “Maija Mehiläinen” brings a sense of joy and familiarity into Nordic homes.
Recalling the lovable German children’s book character published in 1912, “Maija Mehiläinen” - meaning Maya the Bee - this model carries undeniable charisma, with Maya’s stripes recognisable in the lamp’s structure. The shades are made up of a tall cylindrical forms of slender metal layered discs, each layer delicately floating above the next, emitting a soft and diffused glow. Resembling the abdomen part of a honeybee, it stands on three elegant brass legs, running up through the fourteen slates, and finally poking out from the top, bearing a resemblance to delicate bee-like antennae. While having the appearance of the insect itself, the design also gives the impression of a beehive - especially when they are switched on and the warm light seeps out in between the gaps of the layers, like drizzling honey from the cracks of honeycomb walls.
This lighting model stands out in the most wholesome and comforting way, capable of evoking dear childhood memories as well as keeping spirits up during the long winter months for those longing for the lightness of spring, full of flowers and life.

By the 1950s, Finland had established itself as a force of innovation in design. During this era, the country saw the birth of many of its most iconic lighting models; it was a period of consistency in excellence and sophisticated design. Itsu, short for Itä-Suomen Sähkö (eng. Eastern Finland Electricity), was one of the lesser known gems of Finland’s lighting manufacturers. Founded in 1945, after World War II, Itsu produced characteristic models in small quantities, that endure to this day through their masterful design and great quality.
This ceiling light exemplifies that restrained approach through its striking inverted conical shade made from finely pleated fabric. The tightly gathered pleats radiate from the central brass fitting, creating a crisp geometric pattern that gives the large shade a light, even and ethereal appearance. The brass finial anchors the centre of the fixture, while the shade itself covers the ceiling mount, and thus remaining the visual focus. When illuminated, the pleated fabric softens and diffuses the light evenly across its broad surface, producing a warm ambient glow. This quality even further emphasizes the rhythm of the folds. The generous diameter makes the lamp an effective central ceiling fixture, yet its clean silhouette prevents it from overwhelming a space. The combination of fabric and brass, together with the disciplined geometry of the pleated form, demonstrates how simple materials can achieve a refined and highly architectural result.
This ceiling lamp is the perfect way to add a touch of elegance to any space without being overwhelming. Its emphasis on creating comfortable, atmospheric light, as well as its unique character illustrate the qualities for which Finnish mid-century lighting is appreciated.

The company was celebrated for its attention to detail and ability to merge form and function seamlessly. Valinte Oy's designs have always embodied the spirit of Finnish craftsmanship and have often incorporated elements of nature, evoking a sense of purity and simplicity.

These lamps can also draw attention to any architectural element, guiding the eye with a strong first impression. Crafted from brass and opal glass, and thanks to its minimalist form and neutral colour palette, they are quintessentially Finnish modern. Opal glass is durable and resistant to heat, which made it suitable for the functional demands of lighting fixtures. Furthermore, the material allows for a wide range of shapes and designs, thus designers often took advantage of its versatility, shaping it into intriguing and organic forms that could transform a room while being a piece of art in themselves. This adaptability gave designers the creative freedom to experiment and innovate, resulting in lighting fixtures such as this model: both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Another distinctive detail of this lamp pair is the brass netting around the bottom part of the shades. The harmonious fusion of opal glass and brass in this model showcases the maker's dedication to quality and craftsmanship.
As a whole, the lamps embody the understated elegance of Finnish design during the mid-20th century. They bring together a thoughtful form and sensitivity that feels distinctly Nordic. As functional objects, the pair offers illumination that feels inviting and enveloping. This balance of sculptural character and atmospheric softness is what makes the pair resonate so strongly today, fitting seamlessly into various interiors.

Paavo Tynell was one of the central figures in the development of modern Finnish lighting. Trained as a metalworker, he co-founded the company Taito Oy in 1918, where he served as managing director and chief designer for several decades. By the 1930s, Tynell was designing lighting for major architectural projects and working alongside figures such as Alvar Aalto, developing an approach in which precise metalwork, simple forms and carefully diffused light came together.
Model “7239” is composed around cylindrical opal glass shades suspended from compact nickel-plated metal structures. Each fixture begins with a circular wall plate, from which a short arm projects horizontally before bending downward at a clean right angle toward the shade. This simple curve gives the lamps a clear architectural profile, while the reflective metal introduces a sharp contrast against the softly luminous glass. The shades have an elongated cylindrical form with gently rounded corners, through which light passes evenly thanks to the opal glass. When lit, the shades turn into warm glowing volumes while keeping the bulb concealed. A shallow metal cap closes the upper part of each shade and visually connects it to the arm above, giving the fixture a particularly resolved transition between glass and metal. The proportions are carefully controlled: the round backplate echoes the width of the shade without competing with it, while the short projecting arm holds the glass just far enough from the wall for its full shape to remain visible.
Seen as a pair, the repeated circles, curved arms and vertical glass forms create a strong rhythm. These model “7239” lamps are particularly effective beside a bed, a mirror or artwork, or arranged along a hallway, as they are perfect for adding warmth without dominating the space.

By the 1950s, Finland had established itself as a force for innovation in design. The best qualities of Finnish light fixtures are their atmospheric light and disciplined, functionalist design that is not short of unique decorative elements. This lamp was manufactured by Itsu, or Itä-Suomen Sähkö (eng. Eastern Finland Electricity), a small, then lesser-known manufacturer that produced characteristic models in small quantities.
The form of this brass light is made up of versatile geometric shapes; circle, cylinder, and a cone. What makes the design so compelling is its mix of restraint and personality. The lamp feels open and airy, with negative space functioning as an essential part of the model. At the same time, the craftsmanship is of the highest quality, standing the test of time. Accentuating the different shapes is the polished brass that features a nice patina. Overall, the composition of the shapes and clever decorative elements give this lamp a personality that isn’t loud but still stands out, which is an essentially Finnish design virtue. The refined work and unique aesthetic of Finnish lighting designers has made their creations increasingly valued by collectors in the know.
This wall lamp is a wonderful example of the appeal of Finnish mid-century lighting. Its construction allows it to function equally well as a practical light source and decorative object. Whether installed in a hallway, bedroom, or living space, the model brings warmth, sophistication, and a sense of understated luxury to an interior. The enduring design demonstrates why Nordic lighting from this period continues to be so highly regarded today.

Gunnel Nyman was one of the pioneers of modern Finnish glass design, with her work extending from glassware to furniture and lighting design. Trained at the School of Industrial Arts in Helsinki under Arttu Brummer, she designed lighting for Idman Oy early in her career while simultaneously developing the innovative glass objects for which she is best known.
Model 51132/5 features five amber-tinted glass shades arranged in a circular composition, each supported by elegantly curved brass arms that extend from a central hub. The shades have a finely spiral-moulded surface that subtly refracts the light, giving the warm amber glass additional depth and texture when illuminated. The looping brass arms become an integral part of the design, creating a rhythmic composition of repeated curves beneath the glass. The slender suspension stem reinforces the chandelier's light appearance, allowing the sculptural arrangement of the shades to take center stage. The contrast between the polished brass and softly glowing glass creates a warm, balanced composition that is equally decorative whether lit or unlit. Every element is carefully proportioned, from the compact central fitting to the generous spacing of the five shades, resulting in a fixture that distributes light evenly while maintaining a refined architectural presence.
Despite her short career, Nyman received international recognition, including a gold medal at the 1937 Paris World Exhibition, and her work is represented today in major museum collections. This chandelier demonstrates her ability to combine functional lighting with sculptural composition, while reflecting the high level of craftsmanship that characterised Finnish lighting produced by Idman during the mid-twentieth century.

The most famous Finnish industrial designer, Paavo Tynell came to be known as the “man who illuminated Finland” thanks to his notable lighting designs. A master craftsman, Tynell’s designs were reflective of a traditional aesthetic with a modern sensibility, mixed with an extensive use of glass and brass as materials.
This lamp embodies the sleek and straightforward aesthetic that characterised Finnish design in the 1930s. Even in the absence of ornamentation, there was always an emphasis on interesting, high-quality materials. Milk glass, appropriately named for its opaque or translucent pure ivory white tone, was first created in Venice in the 16th century, and was known as Lattimo. At that time, it was widely used for decorative purposes and continued to be popular during the 20th century when the material was used as home accents to decorate households. This lamp is a mid-century example of the beauty of this material, rooted in its history. It has an eye-catching blunted cone shape with a strong presence, sticking out quite literally. Still, the edges are just as soft as the light this lamp diffuses. Thanks to the concealed aluminium ceiling holder, this lamp is flush mounted without any exposed parts but the glass shade. Tynell was a master of working with milk glass, and his lamps made of this material are some of his most sought-after designs.
Finnish designers like Tynell pushed the boundaries of what was possible with new materials and manufacturing techniques in the 20th century. At the same time, there was a strong emphasis on simplicity and functionality, as designers sought to create objects that were both beautiful and practical. Tynell's lamps perfectly embody these qualities, with clean lines, and a peculiar, but functional design.

Finnish mid-century design is characterised by simple, elegant forms, which Paavo Tynell was a master of. Like Finnish culture, he embraced timeless beauty, sustainability, and a deep connection to the natural world. His favourite material to work with was brass, and he formed it into distinctive and unique shapes.
Paavo Tynell is one of Finland's best-known and most collected mid-century designers; he pioneered European lighting design and co-founded the first lighting manufacturing company in Finland, Taito Oy. Functionality, a pared-down, simple style, and a thoughtful colour palette are key principles for the Finnish icon, whose "9032" chandelier model features modern elements and focuses on the characteristics of the brass itself paired with five shades. The shades are made of delicate rattan slats which allow the light to shine through, while giving the fixture a subtle sense of organic texture and symmetry. The material introduces depth and visual warmth, softly diffusing the glow while contrasting with the texture of the smooth brass. Small decorative details adorn the central stem, offering the construction a unique charm. Brass, the material of choice for many mid-century lighting pieces, catches the light, creating a layered illumination that is both functional and atmospheric. The proportions of this piece are carefully considered, with the compact cluster of shades balanced by the slender stem above. The prowess of the producer becomes evident as this lamp represents a statement piece.
Rather than relying on excess ornament, this chandelier merges decorative elements with a clear structure. This approach reflects a broader tendency in Finnish mid-century design, where elaborate pieces maintain a sense of restraint and cohesion. Today, ceiling lamps by Taito are appreciated for this balance, offering both sculptural presence and practical illumination.
