Stained Beech Easy Chairs in Sheepskin by a Danish Cabinetmaker, Denmark 1940s (sold)

Stained Beech Easy Chairs in Sheepskin by a Danish Cabinetmaker, Denmark 1940s (sold)
This pair of mid-century easy chairs revolves around high-quality materials, comfort and the mastery of Danish cabinetmakers. Danish design is a remarkable combination of concern for comfort and materiality melded with a desire for Shaker-like clarity.
Most notably, the vintage pieces of the 1940s are an exciting collision of sensuality, usually evidenced in the materials, with the discipline of the design. This pair of easy chairs showcases these characteristics, as well as the desire to keep functionality and comfort at the core of the design. Easy chairs – umbrella term for typically upholstered, comfortable chairs - in particular are expected to provide a design and level of comfort that assures relaxation. This is achieved by the slightly raised seats and bent backrests that guarantee these qualities. The sculptural armrests complement the rounded edges of the body, and along with the simple, tapered legs, they highlight the beech wood, creating a balance between the materials.
These chairs are visually reminiscent of Arnold Madsen’s famous ‘Clam Chair’, sharing numerous visual qualities. The curving armrests and splayed legs accompanying the organic body made both the Clam and these chairs beloved. The chairs have been recently reupholstered in premium sheepskin, which not only elevates the beauty of the stained beech frame, but also provides a look of elegant cosiness.

About the Designer:
Thepractical and comfortable designs of Danish cabinetmakers defined mid-20th century modern seating. The Danish Cabinetmakers focused on minimalist design executed by expertly skilled craftsmen.
Works from the Danish Cabinet-Makers' Guild is a concept of its own in collectible design. The Cabinet-Makers' Guild began annual exhibitions in 1927 in Copenhagen. The group formed an exhibit showing each year in October the quality furniture made to drawings by gifted architects. The exhibition took place each year, without interruption, for forty years. A number of successful Danish Design collaborations were formed during this time between cabinetmakers and architects.
Danish Modernism has influenced Scandinavian furniture to a great degree, defined by minimalism, simplicity, and functionality. The muted colours and gentle designs make Danish mid-century furniture an ideal addition to contemporary living spaces. Additionally, master cabinetmakers were highly aware of body proportions, prioritizing comfort just as much as the visual qualities.
The works of master cabinetmakers – such as this chair – are of the highest quality, both in terms of materials and craftsmanship. Cabinetmakers take the art of working with wood one step further, and focus on the finer details of what can be created with the material. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that numerous master cabinetmakers are part of the renowned Danish Culture Canon (Danish: Kulturkanonen). The canon contains no more than 108 works of cultural excellence, based on works with a useful function and that are still recognizable today. This small armchair is the perfect illustration of Danish design, and the work of a true cabinetmaker. ~H.

Art Deco was an era-defining movement in furniture design. During its heyday, it represented luxury, glamour, exuberance and faith in social and technological progress. European furniture designers’ artistic approach was anchored by refinement, expressed through graceful forms and traditional methods. The mix of boldness and richness became central to European Art Deco interiors, where furniture was expected to contribute atmosphere as much as function.
These chairs illustrate the bold aesthetic of the first half of the 20th century. Art Deco designers and cabinetmakers coupled geometry and craftsmanship to create elegantly impressive pieces like this pair. The construction of this stunning pair features high-quality materials, from the wooden frame to the soft upholstery. The frames are defined by the sweeping and sleek arms that curve outward and downward in a flowing motion. Their striking appearance is the result of the brilliant pairing of materials; the solid wood structures’ polished lines stand out against the textural, organic sheepskin while also accentuating the individuality of the upholstery. The long-haired fabric gives the chairs an almost organic appearance while emphasizing comfort and warmth.
As a pair, these armchairs stand as striking examples of European craftsmanship. The thoughtful design, from the choice of materials to the thoughtful details, ensures that these chairs are as much a work of art as they are functional seating, enhancing the comfort and aesthetic value of any space. As relics of a pivotal time in design history, they continue to inspire and captivate, embodying the enduring appeal of modernist and Art Deco principles.

Italian Modern furniture is defined by unique design, perfect execution, and exclusivity. Modernist Italian designers’ language was always coherent with current times and congenial to the wisdom of furniture manufacturing, representing an outpost of strong innovation in the panorama of Italian craftsmanship.
This pair is focused on elegant and measured proportions, balanced compositions, and refined décor elements including the exclusive materials. The versatile shapes, from the rounded edges on the top to the square, unattached armrests and tapered legs make these chairs stand out. The V-shaped high backs are visually defining thanks to their sheer size and unusual shape. The enveloping backs become narrower towards the seat, like elegant, slim necks, with the sides flowing into the armrests, creating a structured, but still flowing angle and impression. The beautiful, richly textured bouclé fabric brings out the versatility of the shapes even further, and contrasts the solid wood legs as well. The backs are decorated with seven, yellow cross stitches arranged symmetrically, which further adds to the modern edge.
The 1960s’ Italy was especially passionate about furniture and product design, an area where the country remained faithful to a figurative repertoire of substantial classicism, while not disdaining impulses of authentic modernity. Similar designs are commonly attributed to Paolo Buffa, who - like many of his contemporaries - was extremely active in the Milanese design scene that was just as vibrant as these chairs. In an atmosphere committed to the reinterpretation of the Lombard classicism and Milanese architecture, exceptional pieces were created as this pair shows.

As with the UK and much of Europe, something of a design renaissance took place in 1950s France due to developments in materials and technology after the war. French designers were often also architects, whose focus on functionality and quality resulted in sculptural models, such as this pair of chairs.
The craftsmanship of this pair is confident yet discreet, visible in the clean junctions and honest detailing of the joinery. Upholstered in off-white ponyskin, the chairs gain their quiet luxury through material rather than embellishment. The hide’s softness and natural irregularities lend warmth to the geometry of the frame, while its muted tone enhances the overall sense of comfort. Together, the wood and hide establish a dialogue between texture and form: one smooth, one tactile, both grounded in natural beauty. The chairs also feature beautiful brass-capped legs - the lines are crisp and elegant, aiding the stability and comfort. 1950s design prioritised clean lines, simplicity, and a connection with nature, this pair truly exemplifies these principles. The maker of this model not only had a preference for its main characteristics and materials, but a deep respect as well. The functionality, longevity and clean lines are all in favour of the user, maintaining the focus on authentic simplicity. Though many mid-century French designers may not have the name recognition as some of their Scandinavian counterparts, they were integral to developing a modern aesthetic in Europe. The appreciation for their contribution is still growing today making outstanding pieces like these chairs highly sought after.

These side chairs originate from Europe in the 1960s, a period defined by a renewed appreciation for natural materials, functional craftsmanship, and honest construction. Mid-century European design moved away from excess ornamentation in favour of clarity, comfort, and durability. Oak furniture from this era reflects a balance between modernist restraint and timeless handcraft, highlighting structure and material.
This pair is crafted from solid wood, featuring softly rounded frames with gently curved arms and ladder-style backrests that emphasize both strength and comfort, while also showcasing gently carved contours. The warm tone of the wood highlights the natural grain, adding visual depth and character to the clean, architectural structure. The proportions are generous, offering an embracing seat. The slightly splayed legs and cross-stretchers provide stability. Moreover, the seats are upholstered in rich sheepskin, introducing a contrasting texture that softens the overall design and enhances comfort. The use of this material aligns the chairs with the decade’s interest in warmth, tactility, and elegance. The organic surface of the hide adds subtle textural and visual variation, making the pair feel like a focal point of any space. Together, the sturdy oak construction and plush upholstery create a pleasing dialogue between structure and softness.
With their combination of durable and inviting materials, these side chairs embody the relaxed refinement of European mid-century design. They function effortlessly as statement pieces while remaining practical for everyday use. Timeless in form and character, the pair offers an expression of 1960s craftsmanship that fits effortlessly into both modern and classic interiors.

This pair of oaken “Grand Repos” lounge chairs deserves its title of iconic, both in terms of quality and design. This model visually represents the very reason Votre Maison, the French duo, Guillerme et Chambron’s company significantly influenced French design history.
Guillerme and Chambron are known for their high-quality, solid oak furniture and the “Grand Repos” model is without a doubt their most distinctive seating design thanks to its spindle backrest and distinctive frame with plenty of curvature. With a solid wooden frame, the support for the back of each chair consists of six, symmetrically arranged wooden spindles extending upwards. The backrests are slightly tilted for comfort, aided by the generous seats and back cushions. The back cushions are adorned with tufted buttons that add depth to the textured bouclé upholstery. The standout feature of this model are the creative overarching spindles that create an almost throne-like, grandiose effect. The curvature of the arms follows the lines of the backs, and gently curve outwards. “Grand Repos” stands for “great rest” in French, and with a well-though out, elegant design, this pair is sure to provide exactly that. The elegant light colour of the upholstery of the seat and back cushions beautifully compliments the light oak frames. The back cushions are secured with loops that attach to the back spindles, ensuring that the cushions stay in position.
The woodworking truly shows the overall quality of this pair, the frames are refined and the attention to the smallest detail shows the design and manufacturing skills of Robert Guillerme and Jacques Chambron. Since each chair was created by hand, they differ marginally in size and shape visible in the backs and legs, making them even more unique.

About the Designer:
Robert Guillerme graduated in 1934 from the École Boulle where he excelled in architecture and furniture design. After the Second World War he moved to Lille, in the north of France, where he decorated homes and designed furniture for the well regarded Rogier workshops.
In 1948, Guillerme was joined by his long-time friend, decorator Jacques Chambron in Lille. The following year Guillerme and Chambron met master cabinetmaker Émile Dariosecq, owner of a woodworking shop and the company Votre Maison was born. Together, they defined and imposed a new furniture concept. Thanks to their distinctive creativity, originality, and quality, the Votre Maison quickly became well-known.
The Votre Maison marked the history of French design. Guillerme drew the furniture designs while Chambron played the part of salesman, welcoming and advising clients. The power duo was complemented by Dariosecq, whose workshop took charge of the manufacturing. Together, they defined new furnishings concepts. Well-crafted chair back, polished wood and thick cushions make the reputation of their armchairs and sofas. Votre Maison continued to produce furniture right into the 20th century, with Jacques’s son Hervé Chambron, a designer and graduate of the École Boulle, having taken the over in 1983. ~H.

Bridge Chairs - Fauteuil Bridge - from France are generally lightweight, often part of a set of matching chairs and bridge table. Bridge chairs were originally designed in the late 1930s for ladies for leisure activities, such as for games of bridge, afternoon tea, and gossiping. As this pair of bridge chairs exhibits, the models are stylish, of small proportions, well-made, and extremely comfortable.
This solid oak “Fumay” pair is indeed, part of a dining group designed in 1965 by the world-famous French duo, Robert Guillerme and Jacques Chambron. As the version with arms, this pair’s frames are quite distinctive; the decorative elements on the backrests and armrests show and interesting curvature that is characteristic of the designer duo. These sculptural elements paired with the tapered legs are carved out of the blonde oak in an artistic way, testifying of the quality that the duo’s company, Votre Maison became famous for. The structures have unexpected details, such as the seats, with sides that are covered by the cushions, making them look invisible. Another such detail are the stretchers arranged between the legs at different heights in the fronts and sides. The genius of the design lies in these details that no matter how different, still complement each other. The sleek look is completed by the upholstered cushions in light bouclé fabric, that pairs beautifully with the colour of the blonde oak.
The French designers’ models are considered as a reference among the furniture of the 1950s through the 70s. This pair of dining chairs from the 60s gives a visual explanation why: the proportions, the subtle decorative elements, and the quality of woodworking is of the highest-quality, and the result is an immediately recognizable look that will never go out of style.

This pair of armchairs is what we consider a timeless Danish Modern classic. The “ND83” was designed in 1952 by Nanna and Jørgen Ditzel for the exhibition 'Today’s Furniture, Home Equipment' in the Forum Hall Copenhagen in 1952.
Chairs are often considered especially revealing of a designer's skill because of the strict limits placed on their design by the demands of the human body. With this model, the Ditzels arrive at a clearly-structured solution in which a high degree of coherence is maintained while the chair appears visually light and open. The structure of the chairs is made entirely of solid oak. Each sculpted leg is made of a single piece of timber that ascend gently, giving stability to the curved backs. Rounded oak dowels plug the holes in which the fastenings for the back can be found -these help to create the elegant simplicity and honesty of the frame. The large curved backs extend up to the front, forming the armrests for a cosy and elegant profile similar to that of a tub chair. The elegance is further enhanced by the premium bouclé upholstery which complements the oak gracefully.
Cabinetmaker Søren Willadsen handcrafted these chairs, while them company Selig Co., imported them to the U.S. market from Denmark in 1952. The “ND83” model is still made to order today, however chairs – like these - from the original production show Ditzel and Willadsen’s true genius. The original marking on the wood is retained.

Francis Jourdain was known to be vocal about modern art and aesthetics, and he heavily criticized contemporary French design for its ostentatious luxury. His designs were straightforward in construction and less pompous in nature. This set is in line with his views, showing French tradition, while taking advantage of natural materials and clever construction.
French furniture and interior designers of the mid-century are known as masters of elegantly organic forms. As such, these chairs and footstools are characterised by clean lines and a free spirit. The design is focused on sinuous curves, especially on the contoured arms with a carefully sculpted and carved shape that runs down to form the legs as well. The straight lines of the seat and backrests are masterfully broken by this curvature. Furthermore, this set combines remarkable style with balance, functionality and premium materials. Rattan, used for everything from basket weaving to furniture making had found extensive use and appreciation in the context of modern 20th century design. Thanks to its unique characteristics, rattan adds an element of texture and lightness, contributing to the overall visual balance of the set. Not only do the materials complement each other, but the shades of brown, and textural variety go perfectly together, adding depth. Moreover, thanks to the outstanding ergonomics of the reclined backrests and use of footstools, the whole body of the sitter is supported.
Though many mid-century French designers may not have the name recognition as some of their Scandinavian counterparts, they were integral to developing a modern aesthetic in Europe. The appreciation for their contribution is still growing today making outstanding pieces like these lounge chairs and footstools highly sought after.

About the designer:
Francis Jourdain was born on 2 November 1876, son of the architect Frantz Jourdain. His father was the founder of the Salon d'Automne collection. He benefited from the relationship of his parents with the era's famous intellectuals (Émile Zola, Alphonse Daudet) and artists (the circle of Alexandre Charpentier). Jourdain said of the society in which he grew up that it was dominated by people who were highly opinionated and quick to take sides.
Jourdain became a painter, and was a pioneer of the Art Nouveau style, in which he was distinguished as a decorator of the Villa Majorelle in Nancy. A stencilled panel by Jourdain with elegant, cleanly silhouetted images was shown at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris. In 1911 Jourdain began to design furniture, following the teachings of Adolf Loos (1847–1933). He opened Les Ateliers Modernes in 1912, a small furniture factory. With his built-in furniture and storage systems he was able to make small areas appear spacious. He owned a furniture shop by 1919, Chez Francis Jourdain. Jourdain was a regular exhibitor from 1913 to 1928 at the Salon d'Automne and the Societé des Artistes Décorateurs, and published many articles on modern art and aesthetics in which he attacked the ostentatious luxury that was typical of contemporary French design. His own designs were simple, with straightforward construction.
He collaborated with Le Corbusier in 1920 in publishing a journal titled L'esprit nouveau, subsidized by the government. It advocated standardization and industrial production as an alternative to individual design, required to rebuild the shattered French society and economy of the years following World War I. Jourdain was a prolific writer on art in the period after World War II (1939–45). At the end of his life, Jourdain acted as president of the Secours populaire français. He died in Paris on 31 December 1958 at the age of 82. ~H.

The company Votre Maison is one that has left an indelible mark on the history of French design. The soul of Guillerme et Chambron’s work was in the company’s name (“Your House”). Their focus was as keenly attuned to functionality as to the creation of innovative design. The 'Denis' model chairs, designed by Robert Guillerme along with his sales partner Jacques Chambron, are a stunning examples of the works created at Votre Maison during the 1950s.
This type of “fauteuil bridge” (or, "bridge chairs") from France are generally lightweight, often part of a matching set of chairs and bridge table. "Bridge chairs" were originally designed in the late 1930s for leisure activities, such as card games, afternoon tea, and catching up. The typical models are stylish, of small proportions, well-made, and extremely comfortable - as this set greatly exemplifies. With an interesting open construction, this chair model's frame is very distinctive, with the armrests' curvature flowing into the chair’s front legs. Through this subtle, yet powerful detail, the straight lines of the legs and backrest are softened by the rounded shape of the arms. The gentle feel is further enhanced by the cushion’s rectangular shape with slightly rounded edges. The partially open backrest creates a light and open impression that is further amplified by the lighter coloured upholstery, which contrasts with the wood. Another distinctive feature is the pair of stretchers set parallel between the front and back legs, which join the legs together with an inward curve that mimics the curve of the backrest.
The elegant tones of both the upholstery and the wooden frame highlight the timeless allure of this set. From the refined wood color to the carefully thought-out structural details, this model is characteristic of Robert Guillerme and Jacques Chambron’s unique style and manufacturing skills.

“Danish Modern” is a recognised term around the world, standing for the style of Danish design created during the 20th century. As these armchairs show, furniture created in this period is characterised by clarity of design, and extremely high-quality craftsmanship and choice of materials.
Danish and Scandinavian modern's timeless appeal has made it a go-to for designers and homeowners alike, as furniture in this style can be understated but still stand out in almost any space. This is true for this pair of armchairs as well. Adopting the trend of abandoning ornamentation to benefit the form, the designer of this pair maintained the beauty and warmth inherent to traditional Danish cabinetmaking. From as early as the 1920s, cabinetmakers and architects frequently collaborated to produce exceptional pieces like these chairs. The backs have a welcoming, enveloping shape that embraces the sitter. The fully upholstered bodies are covered in textural, soft fabric that enhances the curves and contrasts nicely with the stained wood legs. The legs are straight and square in the front and slightly bent and splayed in the back to provide structural stability. Unlike models from outside Scandinavia, Danish designers’ products weren’t flashy but made to be last generations while remaining timeless addition to a space, while completing a warm, comfortable and welcoming home. As this pair of armchairs exemplify, blending high functionality, good quality natural materials and organic colours with simple lines, elegance and excellent craftsmanship is the key to the success of Danish Modernism.

“Danish Modern” is a recognized term around the world, standing for the characteristic style of Danish design created during the 20th century. As these lounge chairs show, furniture created in this period are characterized by clarity in design, and extremely high-quality craftsmanship and choice of materials.
This pair of lounge chairs exudes quality and personality from all angles. Their classic shape is formed by the generous seat and embracing back. The large, curved backrests feature tufted buttons and follow the curve of the voluptuous seats, creating an inviting and open look which is a signature characteristic of Danish Modernism. The tufting stitches are festooned with thirteen, symmetrically arranged buttons on each chair, that sink into the soft upholstery. The tapered, lacquered wood legs prevent the chairs from looking heavy by slightly lifting them off the ground, while their warm brown colour nicely contrasts the soft, light colour of the bodies. The back legs are splayed to provide structural support to the chairs.
Thanks to the sheepskin, the chairs give a natural, textured look, making them ideal to blend a stroke of modernity to any space, with a nod to organic, simple artistry. Sheepskin is the ultimate material for comfort, warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The artisanal production quality is evident throughout this pair and takes the Danish idea of “furniture that last for generations” seriously.

The canon contains no more than 108 works of cultural excellence, based on works with a useful function and that are still recognizable today. This small armchair is the perfect illustration of Danish design, and the work of a true cabinetmaker. ~H.

French mid-century seating frequently combined elements of regional craftsmanship with the cleaner lines associated with modernist furniture. Rush weaving, long used in traditional French chairs, remained present throughout the post-war period, particularly in pieces that favoured natural materials and visible construction over heavy upholstery. Rather than concealing how a chair was made, designs like this highlighted joinery, wood grain, and woven surfaces.
This pair of armchairs brings together that approach through a restrained oak frame and handwoven rush seats. The structure is built from slender uprights and gently tapering legs, giving the chairs a light visual presence despite their size and proportions. The tall backrests are composed of vertical slats that introduce rhythm to the silhouette while keeping the form open and airy. The armrests extend from the back before projecting forward in a clean horizontal line, reinforcing the architectural quality of the design. The woven rush seats introduce texture and warmth, contrasting with the smoother surfaces of the wood. The natural fibres soften the geometry of the frame while also emphasizing the craftsmanship involved in the construction.
Together, the chairs inspire a quiet elegance that comes from masterful craftsmanship. The combination of materials creates richness without excess, allowing the structure to remain the focal point. Their silhouettes feel grounded in traditional French furniture making, yet the simplicity of the lines ensures the qualities of mid-century modern design.
