Sculptural Coconut Wood Chair, Europe Second half of the 20th Century (sold)

Sculptural Coconut Wood Chair, Europe Second half of the 20th Century (sold)

$0.00

Crafted in the second half of the 20th century, this chair represents the attention on exploring modern shapes and forms that fascinated the designers of the era. The design strikes a balance in its woodwork, combining a smooth and refined finish that still shows the natural beauty of its charming ridges. To design sculptural and quietly expressive items that are forward-looking - and at the same time deeply human - was the real aspiration of the time.

With its monoxyl structure, meaning it was carved from a single block of wood, this chair is a true testament to minimalist design. Without distinctive pieces or a separate backrest, the chair still follows an ergonomically carved structure. The masterful craftsmanship of this chair makes this heavy block of wood appear as if it was effortlessly sculpted from a mound of soft clay. The low, grounded stance of the chair invites the sitter to completely sink in the seat of the wood, leading to a meditative rest. The scooped seat showcases a darker inner circle, and when looked at from above one can see countless small, thin concentric layers of natural age rings decorating the seating, echoing the past of the coconut palm. Flowing over its rounded edges on the outside of the chair, a beautiful grain pattern is revealed in stripes of amber and a darker hazelnut-toned brown. Organic in appearance, the chair bears only the lightest touch of human hands, suggesting it could be seamlessly returned to the landscape from whence it came and wouldn’t seem strange to find in nature.

The natural design speaks for itself: its neutral yet striking look makes it suitable for both modern and organic interiors, and cements itself as a simultaneously quiet and bold statement piece. Sensitive human touches enliven the brutalist design, visible in the careful craftsmanship.
