The Art Nouveau design ethos took its name from a Paris art gallery, House of the New Art (Maison de l’Art Nouveau) which was opened in 1895. It is a highly ornamental style of art that - as this ceiling lamp shows - is characterized by its use of long sinuous, organic lines taking inspiration from nature. The desire for increased craftsmanship is so many evident, which is why most of the lights were hand finished.

The brass ceiling lamp crafted circa 1900 is an exquisite testament to the elegance and innovation of the period. Art Nouveau, and thus the design of this model sought to break free from the constraints of academic art and revive a sense of craftsmanship in the industrial age. Characterized by sinuous lines, organic forms, and intricate details, this lamp captures the essence of the Art Nouveau aesthetic. The lamp’s more subtle part ends where the straight brass rod connects to the arms. From there on, the three gracefully curved arms flow down, each holding a delicate socket embraced by a diamond patterned glass shade. This lamp is constructed out of a triple-stem body, in which three slender copper supports rise from a broad domed base before converging to create a unified form. This arrangement creates a sense of lightness while giving the base a sculptural character. The copper has acquired a rich patina over time, lending it a charming, lived-in feeling. A wide conical shade complements the composition, its crisp geometric profile contrasting with the softly rounded forms below. This pendant lamp embodies the movement through a striking decorative construction.

The pendant is constructed around a hexagonal wooden shade featuring a sequence of stepped, concentric tiers. Each successive layer decreases toward the center, producing a shallow inverted-pyramid profile and giving depth to the shade. The repeated horizontal edges emphasize the geometry, while the visible grain and warm tone of the wood soften the otherwise precise composition. Along the surface, carved horizontal elements offer the shade a dynamic appearance, with flowing lines guiding the eye across the wood.
