Olle Alberius was one of Sweden's foremost ceramic and glass designers during the 20th century. After studying at the Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, he joined Rörstrand in 1963, where he designed both unique stoneware and glass pieces. Founded in 1726, Rörstrand is one of Sweden's oldest and most celebrated ceramic manufacturers, renowned for combining artistic innovation with exceptional craftsmanship over nearly three centuries.

Alberius' work for the company is admired for its refined forms, expressive glazes, and sensitive understanding of ceramic material, all qualities perfectly encapsulated in this table lamp. A low circular wooden base supports the slender brass rod, which transitions into a long reddish-brown wooden stem. The shaft remains straight and uninterrupted for most of its height, emphasising the verticality of the lamp before the composition opens outward at the top. A brass section divides into two curved arms, each describing an arc. The arrangement gives the lamp a distinctive branching silhouette while keeping the overall structure remarkably spare. The arms allow the shades to be adjusted independently, so their openings can face outward, or toward one same spot for additional light. The tapered fabric shades widen slightly toward the openings, echoing the outward movement of the brass arms. Their soft textile surfaces contrast with the polished metal and dark wood, while their relatively small scale leaves the structure in focus. Rather than pursuing strict minimalism, Sejersen’s pieces emphasise depth, surface variation, and a bold handmade charm, giving them a strong presence while remaining rooted in mid-century design. This table lamp has a compact, strongly defined chamotte body built around two contrasting sections. The lower segment is broad, with rounded corners and a dark brown surface adorned by irregular specks, characteristic of the material. The base turns into a narrower neck that tapers inward creating a clear transition to the shade above. The rough chamotte remains visible throughout. A small recessed rectangular motif sits centrally at the front where the neck meets the shoulder, providing a single geometric detail within an otherwise undecorated upper section. Above, the broad conical fabric shade extends past the body. Its sharp, low profile contrasts with the thick, irregular surface of the chamotte, while the narrow neck creates enough separation for the ceramic form to remain clearly visible beneath it.

Paavo Tynell was one of the central figures in the development of modern Finnish lighting. Trained as a metalworker, he co-founded the company Taito Oy in 1918, where he served as managing director and chief designer for several decades. By the 1930s, Tynell was designing lighting for major architectural projects and working alongside figures such as Alvar Aalto, developing an approach in which precise metalwork, simple forms and carefully diffused light came together.

Model “7239” is composed around cylindrical opal glass shades suspended from compact nickel-plated metal structures. Each fixture begins with a circular wall plate, from which a short arm projects horizontally before bending downward at a clean right angle toward the shade. This simple curve gives the lamps a clear architectural profile, while the reflective metal introduces a sharp contrast against the softly luminous glass. The shades have an elongated cylindrical form with gently rounded corners, through which light passes evenly thanks to the opal glass. When lit, the shades turn into warm glowing volumes while keeping the bulb concealed. A shallow metal cap closes the upper part of each shade and visually connects it to the arm above, giving the fixture a particularly resolved transition between glass and metal. The proportions are carefully controlled: the round backplate echoes the width of the shade without competing with it, while the short projecting arm holds the glass just far enough from the wall for its full shape to remain visible.

Jo Hammerborg was closely associated with the transformation of Danish lighting manufacturer Fog & Mørup during the post-war period. He joined the company as head of design in 1957 and remained there until 1980, developing numerous lighting models during those years. Under his direction, Fog & Mørup grew as one of the largest lighting manufacturers in Denmark in the 20th century, creating great models, such as this floor lamp.

The “Kardinal” lamp was designed in 1960s, placing it within Hammerborg’s productive time as a director of Fog & Mørup. The piece has a slender construction, with a vertical stem rising from a geometrical square base. Wood is the dominant material, giving both the base and stem a warm surface, that shows the natural grain of the material. Copper elements intertwine with the wood in interrupted sections and create a lovely juxtaposition of materials, tied in by the similar tonal palette. The square base is bold enough to provide visual weight that anchors the otherwise narrow structure. At the top, the stem terminates in a compact textile shade. The simple geometry of the form continues the effect created by the base. Rather than using an elaborate structure, Hammerborg kept the components visually straightforward, allowing visual proportion and material quality to define the lamp.

With over a century of heritage, Fog & Mørup continues to illuminate homes with its unique blend of Danish ingenuity and timeless elegance, and the “Kardinal” lamp demonstrate why. Its design is clear and elegant, while its simplicity allows it to integrate seamlessly into a variety of spaces.

About the designer:

Danish designer Jo Hammerborg (1920–1982) was one of the defining figures of mid-century Scandinavian lighting. Originally trained as a silversmith, Hammerborg studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts before spending eight years at Georg Jensen, where his understanding of metalwork, proportion and craftsmanship took shape. In 1940-45 he participated in Denmark’s resistance and struggle for freedom as a saboteur.

Afterwards, Hammerborg returned to design, and in 1957, became chief designer at Danish lighting manufacturer Fog & Mørup. Under his direction, the company entered its most creative and commercially successful period. A prolific designer with a sharp eye for detail, Hammerborg created more than 180 lamps, combining sculptural forms with a careful understanding of how light interacts with metal and space. His silversmith background is evident throughout his work. Clean silhouettes, organic curves and precisely worked surfaces in materials such as brass, copper and aluminium gave his lamps a distinctly refined character. Designs such as the Orient pendant capture this approach particularly well: elegant and understated, yet unmistakably sculptural.

Hammerborg was as adventurous outside the studio as he was inventive within it. He was an active and very versatile athlete who, was also a pioneer in parachuting and flying. He died in a skydiving accident in 1982 at the age of 62. Today, his lighting remains highly sought after, securing his place among the most distinctive names in Danish mid-century design.
