In 1918, Paavo Tynell co-founded the first lighting manufacturing company in Finland: Taito Oy. The company was started by a small group of highly-skilled craftsmen that helped build its international success. Tynell, a master craftsman himself, drew inspiration from a traditional aesthetic with a modern design sensibility which led him to become one of the most famous Finnish lighting designers and known as the “man who illuminated Finland”.

Finnish modern design places at its core the inventive use of lighting and the incorporation of natural elements. There is an emphasis on clean lines, geometric shapes, and a focus on practicality. With this set of hanging lamps lies a focus on both simplicity and functionality. Clean lines and harmonious proportions highlight the quality of construction, while the understated design allows it to blend seamlessly into different settings. This model dates to the designer’s pre-brass era and is executed in an early modern functionalist style. These lamps have a gentle, round shape that is just as soft as the light they diffuse. Even in the absence of ornamentation or elaborate shapes and forms, there is still an emphasis on interesting materials. The canopy and stem are enamelled, while the inner shades are made of opal glass. Opal glass was a popular material for lighting fixtures of this era, due in part to its ability to diffuse light. As these lights demonstrate, it was also prized for its lustrous, opaque finish, which gives the design a sophisticated and refined look. Tynell was a master of working with this material, and his lamps with opal glass are some of his most sought-after designs even today. The juxtaposition of the white glass and black metal is a classic example of the contrast and harmony that early-to-mid 20th century design often seeks to achieve.

The 20th century was a time of great innovation in Finnish design, as designers like Tynell pushed the boundaries of what was possible with new materials and manufacturing techniques. Paavo Tynell and Taito’s lighting designs defined the Finnish mid-century era, and the models of the period, including this set of six, are greatly sought after to this day.
