Erik Tidstrand was a Swedish designer and interior architect who first worked at Leja and KM Lundberg until they merged to form Nordiska Kompaniet. Tidstrand became the head of NK's lighting department from its founding in 1902, until 1941. His luminaires received international attention and were showcased at several prestigious exhibitions, such as the world exhibitions in Paris in 1925 and 1937, Barcelona in 1929, as well as the Stockholm exhibition of 1930. NK’s lighting department quickly rose to become a pioneering company in Sweden, ushering in a new era of innovative designs and modern aesthetics.

This innovative table lamp model seamlessly blends tradition with modernity, reflecting the era's design ethos. At the heart of this model is the wooden stem with its rich grain and warm, honeyed tone. The wood has been carefully finished to highlight the natural beauty of the material, and to lend an inviting warmth and tactile quality to the lamp. The craftsmanship speaks to the Swedish tradition of woodworking, which is highlighted in the vertical carvings of the stem. Crowning the lamp is a green lacquered metal shade, a bold yet balanced design choice that provides a touch of playfulness without it being overwhelming. The shade’s shape directs the light downward, making it perfect for task lighting. Its glossy finish contrasts beautifully with the matte finish of the wood. The lamp sits on a polished brass base, which further balances out the piece. The beautiful colours and textures of the brass and wooden stem are emphasized when the light is turned on by the switch on the base. The two bulbs provide warm light, allowing for a soft ambience, bringing a touch of Scandinavian style to any space. This effortless and elegant combination of materials speaks to the design prowess of Tidstrand. Characterised by clean lines, natural materials and intuitive functionality, Scandinavian modern design is eternally timeless and timely as this table lamp stunningly showcases.

The Swedish company Nordiska Kompaniet manufactured this lamp with utmost care for its quality and form. The company was among the most renowned Swedish lighting manufacturers during the mid-century era, working with some of the most well-known Scandinavian designers - and this rare table lamp is a prime example of the great success these collaborations resulted in.
