This “Canada” or model P110 chair was designed by Osvaldo Borsani in 1965 and manufactured by the Borsani brothers’ company, Tecno. The chair is enriched with mechanical components that give it versatility in terms of composition, shape and arrangement.

The Borsani brothers’ company, founded in 1953, had strong ideals, mainly a philosophy of quality. Just like the company’s name in Italy, this “Canada” lounge chair is unmistakable. The wooden structure serves as the base for the upholstered sections that are divided into three parts. Immediately standing out are the oversized buttons, seven on both sides, that secure the cushions in place, while also increasing the visual quality of the chair. The extraordinary heritage of craftsmanship in the treatment of materials, in the attention to detail, in the interpretation of the shape defines this chair. Thanks to the innovative language of the design, this model can fit perfectly into any interior while still standing out visually.

This “Clam” chair has a beloved design thanks to which it is considered by many as one of the most attractive chairs of Nordic Design. At the same time, this chair is arguably also the most mysterious piece on the Danish furniture market.

The model has a rather perplexing history, and has been attributed to several designers before, the latest being the Danish architect Phillip Arctander. However, recent research revealed that the “Clam” is the model that in fact started the story of Madsen & Schubell. Arnold Madsen designed this model in 1944 in his small basement workshop in Gothersgade, Copenhagen.

This chair has a characteristic organic shape with soft curves, perched on club-shaped beech legs. The name comes from the shape of the seat and back that together form the silhouette of an open clam. The round armrests compliment the overall round feel of the chair. The seat is slightly raised towards the front, while the back is tilted to provide great sitting comfort. The seat and back are covered in light sheepskin, adding to the soft and cosy feel of this “Clam”. Interestingly, Hans Schubell invented the special connecting piece of this chair, formed from only one piece of wood. The rest of the seat and backrest were glued to this single piece.

In 1944, the chair was already exhibited in conjunction with the presentation of the newly opened furniture store NY FORM A/S in Copenhagen, which sold the leading design of the day. In 1945, the Clam went into serial production as the first model of the new furniture company Madsen & Schubell and many well-known stores soon included Madsen & Schubell in their product range. Illums Bolighus was one of them, as were the Messen department store and the Copenhagen furniture store Nordisk Staal-og-Møbel Central. In 1953, Madsen & Schubell sold the licence of the chair to the Norwegian company Vik and Blindheim.

About the designer:

Henry Hans Schubell was born on February 23. 1906 in Elsinore, Denmark. After completing school, he became an apprentice cabinetmaker in Elsinore. After 5 years he finished his apprenticeship, and was awarded a medal for his work. When he turned 20, he moved to Copenhagen, where he worked for various cabinetmakers. In 1929, at the age of 23, he was employed as a foreman at the cabinetmakers Winter & Winding, where he supervised the production of furniture until 1945.

In 1944, the firm received a request from an upholsterer named Arnold Madsen, who had an idea for a chair. Madsen was having difficulties finding a cabinetmaker with the required skills to do the woodwork based on Madsen’s little plaster model. Henry Schubell succeeded in producing the wooden frame, making it possible for the chair to be put into production. Arnold Madsen was so impressed by his work that he suggested forming a partnership where Henry Schubell would design the furniture and produce the wooden frames, which Arnold Madsen would then upholster and market. The workshop was realized in the inner city of Copenhagen, and their joint venture was named “Madsen & Schubell”.

The cooperation between Henry Schubell and Arnold Madsen was so successful that they purchased a factory building on the outskirts of Copenhagen. Over the next 20 years, the company produced several successful models, most of which were designed by Henry Schubell. Some of these chairs were licensed to the Norwegian company Vik & Blindheim and to the Dutch company Bovenkamp.

The cooperation between the two ended in 1963, and by mutual agreement, Arnold Madsen established his new upholstery firm under the name “Madsen og Schubell”, in cooperation with his son, Ib Madsen. In the 1970s, Ib took over the company which still ran under the name Madsen & Schubell causing some confusion about the attribution of Madsen & Schubell models. ~H.

This armchair is a compelling embodiment of the French design duo Adrien Audoux and Frida Minet. This chair showcases excellent craftsmanship, care, and precision, visible in the smallest details of the design. The woven seat and backrest, composed of finely braided natural fibres, offer both support and comfort, gently adapting to the shape of the body for a relaxed resting experience. Unlike most chairs, this unique design does not utilise the typical four legs - instead, the structure flows seamlessly into a wide curve that comprises the frame and is the visual highlight of the chair’s form. The armrests appear to be curving down and back in two smooth lines, partially creating a supporting base. The structure of the base is further enforced by a stretcher between the two pieces of bentwood, enhancing stability. Another interesting design detail are the cylinder supports at the front where the arms and base meet, which act as a reinforcement while still maintaining harmony with the rest of the piece. This clever element helps to create a scooped base that supports the entire seat. The bent wood creates a fluid connection, giving the seat a sense of suspension - a light, almost floating presence - with the open surface of the seating and back further enhancing the airy characteristic of the armchair. Though the back rail is a separate piece between the two large curved elements it visually continues the line of the arms, creating the sense of a frame that gracefully encloses the seat.

The impressive silhouette of the armchair is defined by the choice of solid bentwood and woven rope as materials, and techniques that require expert skill, all poured into the final result to create this graceful form. The timeless appeal of this piece complements a wide range of interior styles, capable of transforming any environment with its organic appearance in both form and medium.

Danish Mid-Century Modern furniture reflected Scandinavian materials and craftsmanship and mixed them with a modern style, and the period from roughly 1940 through 1960 was a high point for Danish furniture makers. This set shows why.

This particular chair silhouette has been popular since the 1930s, from around the time Flemming Lassen designed the overstuffed easy chair, the “Tired Man”, for The Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Competition in 1935. The curved and organic lines of the design create an elegant silhouette for both the chair and ottoman. The design of this chair is characterized by organic, curved shapes that create a cosy and welcoming sensation. Since the enveloping back forms the arms as well but doesn’t reach all the way to the beginning of the seat, the design is very open and appears light. The gentle lines are highlighted by the soft wool blend upholstery that uniquely covers the entire bodies of the chair and footstool, including the legs as well. As a representation of early modernist seating, there is a profound focus on comfort and cosiness, that invokes a pleasant homelike feeling. Master cabinetmakers were highly aware of body proportions, prioritizing comfort just as much as the visual qualities, therefore this lounge chair provides support for the back and great sitting comfort.

We have added a newly produced matching, upholstered footstool to provide additional comfort and visual interest. Its design matches the chair with its round shape and soft wool blend upholstery. Together, they form a cosy and luxurious set that exudes Danish design and craftsmanship.

About the Designer:

Thepractical and comfortable designs of Danish cabinetmakers defined mid-20th century modern seating. The Danish Cabinetmakers focused on minimalist design executed by expertly skilled craftsmen.

Works from the Danish Cabinet-Makers' Guild is a concept of its own in collectible design. The Cabinet-Makers' Guild began annual exhibitions in 1927 in Copenhagen. The group formed an exhibit showing each year in October the quality furniture made to drawings by gifted architects. The exhibition took place each year, without interruption, for forty years. A number of successful Danish Design collaborations were formed during this time between cabinetmakers and architects.

Danish Modernism has influenced Scandinavian furniture to a great degree, defined by minimalism, simplicity, and functionality. The muted colours and gentle designs make Danish mid-century furniture an ideal addition to contemporary living spaces. Additionally, master cabinetmakers were highly aware of body proportions, prioritizing comfort just as much as the visual qualities.

The works of master cabinetmakers – such as this chair – are of the highest quality, both in terms of materials and craftsmanship. Cabinetmakers take the art of working with wood one step further, and focus on the finer details of what can be created with the material. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that numerous master cabinetmakers are part of the renowned Danish Culture Canon (Danish: Kulturkanonen). The canon contains no more than 108 works of cultural excellence, based on works with a useful function and that are still recognizable today. Designed in 1952 by Jørgen Høj and Poul Kjærholm for Thorald Madsen Cabinetmakers, this easy chair in ash and flag halyard is a true modernist masterpiece.

Removing everything that was not strictly necessary for its shape and function, the designers created a geometrical and transparent work, that is subdued, yet attention drawing at the same time.

The work was presented at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition at the Designmuseum Danmark in 1952, the only time Kjærholm participated in this event. Although the design was daring for its time, it was welcomed as a breath of fresh air at the exhibition. As a reviewer wrote at the time:⠀

"The most ‘progressive’ interior… was no doubt the one made by architects Jørgen Høj and Poul Kjærholm in collaboration with Thorald Madsen. {…} One has to admit that it provided a refreshing change from the pervading solemnity. It is the duty of all exhibitions to present experiments of this kind which are delightful to some and outrageous to others.”⠀

The work comes with its original flag halyard, and the ash frame has a beautiful, light patina.

Black Chaise longue with stained beech frame, commonly attributed to H.W. Klein for Bramin.

This wonderfully crafted lounge chair has a tilt function, which makes it extremely comfortable. The seat is extended in soft lines as a chaise longue to support your legs. The extension is raised slightly higher than the seat, enabling you to lay back into the chair. The hinge of the chair is in between the backrest and the wooden V-shaped frame. Tilting the seat back allows you to settle back and unwind. The armrests are upholstered in the same black vinyl and are padded for comfort. The sculpted ‘ears’ are common to a traditional wingback chair, enclosing the head in order to provide comfortable protection from drafts, and to trap the heat from a fireplace in the area where the person would be sitting.

About the attributed designer:

Although Norwegian by birth, Henry Walter (H.W.) Klein is closely associated with the Danish modern style. Klein was born in Norway in 1919 but he moved to Denmark in 1949, to study interior design at the Tekniske Skole in Frederikberg. There, he was taught by the prominent Danish designer and architect Finn Juhl. In 1952, Klein returned to Norway to start his own furniture and interiors company. His chairs, tables, and sideboards are characteristic of the postwar Danish modern aesthetic, typically involving fine woods like teak and well proportioned, well crafted forms.
