Axel Einar Hjorth’s designs are sharply distinctive in style, materials, and character. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Hjorth did not conform to the socially oriented ideas produced by Svensk Form (the Swedish Society of Crafts and Design). Produced in 1923, this set of four “Bungalow” dining chairs by Nordiska Kompaniet is a true testament of early 20th century Scandinavian design principles, highlighted by the chairs’ quiet simplicity and quality materials. The vision and aim of Nordiska Kompaniet, a leading Swedish manufacturer since 1902, was to focus on innovative, forward-thinking designers to create pieces that would elevate Stockholm internationally and rival the grandness of Paris.

Made of premium quality wood, the set references the natural materials that are in abundance in the deep forests of Sweden, covering more than three-fifths of the country. With the designer’s choice of combining different materials, the open structure of the rattan seats adds lightness and airiness to the chairs, perfectly balancing out their durable birch structure. Beautifully woven, the rattan is placed neatly and creates a comfortable seating experience. The carved elements at the end of the front legs, as well as an inward ring just below the rattan seating, adds to the quiet charisma of the chairs. Designer Bengt Ruda was the first qualified designer to be employed at IKEA. Before being recruited in 1957, he had designed furniture for the high-end department store Nordiska Kompaniet (NK), working among other things on the self-assembly Triva series.

The “GRILL” chairs are distinctive for their three-legged design, crafted from laminated teak and birch. These materials lend the chairs a natural and warm appearance. The splayed birch legs also provide stability and a touch of Scandinavian simplicity to the design of the chairs. Moreover, these chairs boast a sleek and contemporary look that seamlessly blend functionality with style.

“GRILL” is a good example of how, from the early days, IKEA focused on smart product development. In 1958, “GRILL” won the jury award at the Society of Crafts and Design’s major design exhibition – the forerunner of Excellent Swedish Design. One of the adjectives used by the panel to describe the little chair was “energetic”.

Wood is the most traditional material for furniture, it is organic, elemental, sturdy, and has become very stylish. The Swedish efforts to create applied art attuned to modern man and his needs have been termed a style, Swedish Modern. Exemplified by these chairs by Swedish designer, Yngve Ekström, the style entails cherishing natural forms and an honest treatment of material.

While during the industrial revolution, furniture manufactured from materials such as steel, aluminium, glass and plastic, began to appear, wood has remained a staple material in Swedish furniture manufacturing. The design offers plenty visually with a striking construction and personality. The fan shaped backrests are composed of wooden spindles with a horizontal top with a soft curve that creates a wavy impression. While the masterfully sculpted and symmetrically arranged individual spindles undeniably define the overall look, the seats and legs are just as appealing, showcasing the natural beauty of the wood and the careful craftsmanship. The seats are carved ergonomically to accommodate the sitter, while the legs are splayed to provide stability. For further structural firmness, three stretchers connect the legs. The manufacturer, Nesto Möbel AB, formerly Nässjö Stolfabrik AB, was one of the largest furniture factories in the Nordics which operated from 1870-1992. In 1972, AB Nässjö Stolfabrik changed its name to Nesto Möbel AB.

“To have designed one good chair might not be a bad life’s work” Yngve Ekström once said. With colleagues like Aalto, Mathsson, Jacobsen and Kjaerholm, Yngve Ekström was part of the post-war modern movement that made the concept “Scandina­vian Modern” world-famous. His furniture is represented in many permanent collections, including the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.

About the designer:

Yngve Ekström was born in 1913 in Småland, where the country’s oldest wooden chair facto­ry was situated. His father died young and Ekström started working in joineries in Vaggeryd at the age of 13. His talent for carpentry and his all-round experience gave him a unique feeling for materials and construction.

Ekström is best known for the "Lamino" armchair, an ergonomic, and minimalist easy chair that he designed in 1956 and which has been in continuous production ever since. In 1999, the "Lamino" was named by the influential Swedish magazine Sköna hem as the Swedish furniture design of the twentieth century.

Ekström was the co-founder of the furniture manufacturer ESE-möbler (later renamed Swedese) with his brother Jerker and business partner Sven Bertil Sjöqvist. Ekström worked at Swedese for over 40 years until his death in 1988.

Self-taught, Göran Malmvall was a highly skilled cabinetmaker with considerable technical expertise, and was renowned for the boldness of his innovations. This set of dining chairs holds a strong expression with its sturdy shaped, organic design, which is dominated by the natural beauty of the material. The backrests are formed by straight lines that slightly curve near the edges. This curvature is followed by the seats that are carved ergonomically, creating visual interest. The joinery is visible throughout the chairs, and features both bolts and seamless wooden joinery which is always a sign of quality craftsmanship. The wide backrests showcase the solid pinewood’s beautiful pattern, reinforcing the rustic feel of the design along with the conical legs that are gently tapered and tilted to support stability.

The simple design of these chairs is in line with the Swedish ideals of functional furniture. However, it also portrays a sense of tranquillity that is unique to Scandinavia. About the Designer:

Göran Malmvall (1917–2001) was the youngest son of the manufacturing company’s founder, Karl Andersson. He studied furniture design under Carl Malmsten and was involved with the family business from an early age until 1982, mainly in the capacity of an in-house furniture designer.

Self-taught, he was a highly skilled cabinet-maker with considerable technical expertise, and was renowned for the boldness of his innovations. His most notable designs include Svensk Fur, Svitjod and, not least, the KA 72 cabinet series, first created in 1972 and already a modern classic.

The manufacturer, Karl Andersson & Söner was established in 1898, when carpentry master Karl Andersson started to produce “durable and sustainable furniture” in his parents' home in the village of Berghem between Huskvarna and Gränna. Over a hundred years later, the historic company still manufactures quality furniture and designer furniture in their own modern factory in Huskvarna.

These “Ekerö” chairs are often compared to Axel Einar Hjorth’s Utö model, and not without a reason. These models are often mentioned together thanks to their material and visual resemblance. Both models were produced by Nordiska Kompaniet during the 1930s.

The Ekerö line include two seating models, including these dining chairs and a sofa. Executed in European pine wood, these chairs have a very traditional, simple Swedish look characterized by sturdy and basic forms in solid, local wood. It is a combination of folklore with the aesthetics of early international modernism. The design is quite simplistic: four tapered legs, solid seating and spindle or slat back all created out of pine. Sensitive touches enliven the simple design, visible in the careful craftsmanship. While there is a deliberate plainness and crudity, much like in brutalist designs, these chairs have a more welcoming look thanks to the rounded edges and subtle, decorative carvings on the top, which has a folk appeal. The minimalistic design does not prevent these chairs from being comfortable, which can be observed in the ergonomic design of the seats and curved backs. The sturdy, tapered legs provide a firm base for these chairs, while the backrests offer solid support for the back. Ekerö is a locality (urban area) and the seat of the eponymous Municipality in Stockholm County, Sweden, which could have been the inspiration for the model’s name.

Nordiska Kompaniet was founded in Stockholm in 1902, and to this day, it is regarded as one of the most renowned Swedish furniture manufacturers. The department store reflected modern society in different ways; it was a palace where much was possible and here, consumption became not just a necessary everyday routine, but a lifestyle and a pleasure.
