This mid-century French armchair combines a visually stunning structural body with expert caning technique and high-quality materials.

As with the UK and much of Europe, there was something of a design renaissance in France in the 1950s, due to developments in materials and technology after the war. In France, designers were often also architects, whose focus on functionality and quality resulted in sculptural models, such as this armchair. This model is all about the gorgeous teak structure and the cane panels. Pure, sleek forms, free from artifice or decoration characterise the aesthetic; a style that is commonly referred to as reconstructivism. A reconstructivist design builds upon prior, deconstructionist models and techniques, but adapts them to classic themes and structures, with the goal of creating works of genuine emotion and significance. This armchair in particular recalls the chairs of Swiss architect, Pierre Jeanneret’s designs for Chandigarh in India.

The body features octagonal mesh cane webbing, which is an elegant material that enhances quality and complements the teak wood. Cane webbing is strong enough to support the weight of a sitting person and flexible enough to bend around the sharp corners of wooden frames. Production of cane webbing requires a lot of labour, attention and craftsmanship and every production step involves repetitive careful hand selection. The post-war period in France saw a wide array of inventive and creative contributions to the history of design. These designers and ‘ensembliers’ were skilled at bringing together the many artisanal trades for which France has long been famous, thus communicating a broad picture of French skill and style.

As this lounge chairs and footstool set shows, they put their rigour – but also their imagination – at the service of furniture. While the 1960s saw the emergence of colourful styles and eras such as pop art and the mobi boom, this set preserves the understated elegance of the mid-century modern movement. Aside from some floral wallpaper and curtains, the colours of the 1960s were rather subdued, and earthy colours were the most common. French furniture and interior designers of the mid-century are known as masters of elegantly organic forms. As such, this set is characterized by clean lines and a free spirit. With their fully upholstered bodies supported by metal structures, the design is focused on sinuous curves, especially on the contoured arms. The unexpected curves in combination with the velour upholstery of the chair and footstool are very effective in creating a stylish, elegant look. The deep stitches accentuate the shapes and forms. The most unusual element however, are the splayed black lacquered legs with brass caps. Bridge Chairs - Fauteuil Bridge - from France are generally lightweight, often part of a set of matching chairs and bridge table. They were originally designed in the late 1930s for ladies for leisure activities, such as for games of bridge, afternoon tea, and gossiping. As this bridge chair exhibits, the models are stylish, well-made, and comfortable.

This solid oak “Fumay” is part of a dining group designed in 1965 by the world-famous French duo, Robert Guillerme and Jacques Chambron. As the version with arms, this chair’s frame is quite distinctive; the decorative elements on the backrest and armrest show an interesting curvature that is characteristic of the designer duo. These sculptural elements paired with the tapered legs are carved out of the blonde oak in an artistic way, testifying of the quality that the duo’s company, Votre Maison became famous for. The “Edouard” lounge chair is often described as a “caquetoire”, in other (non-French) words a conversation chair. This type of seating was an armchair style which emerged during the European Renaissance in France.

As the name suggests, this type of chair was meant for sitting for elongated periods to chat. Generally, these chairs were also highly regarded for their aesthetic value as well, which can also be said about this exceptional chair model. The Edouard is a sculptural model with a blonde oak frame that is characteristic of the French designer duo. The design showcases the wide variety of shapes and forms of the solid oak frame, from the hand-sculpted, organic curving lines to the straighter spindles consisting the backrest. Naturally, a conversation chair needs to be first and foremost functional and comfortable, therefore the back is slightly tilted, and the seat raised, aided by the generous seat and back cushions. The light coloured upholstery beautifully complements the wood and the small loops of the bouclé highlight the smoothness of the frame’s surfaces. The French caquetoire chairs were often made from walnut rather than oak allowing the frames to be more easily carved, however, Guillerme and Chambron still preferred this more difficult but also more appealing material. This fact further praises the level of craftsmanship that went into this model. Similarly to its historic predecessors, this lounge chair was also built with traditional “invisible” joinery techniques, therefore no nails are exposed.

This oaken “Grand Repos” lounge chair deserves its title of iconic, both in terms of quality and design. This model visually represents the very reason Votre Maison, the French duo, Guillerme et Chambron’s company significantly influenced French design history.

Guillerme and Chambron are known for their high-quality, solid oak furniture and the “Grand Repos” model is without a doubt their most distinctive seating design thanks to its spindle backrest and distinctive frame with plenty of curvature. With a solid wooden frame, the support for the back of the chair consists of six, symmetrically arranged wooden spindles extending upwards. The backrest is slightly tilted for comfort, aided by the generous seat and back cushions. The back cushion is adorned with tufted buttons that add depth to the textured bouclé upholstery. The standout feature of this model are the creative overarching spindles that create an almost throne-like, grandiose effect. The curvature of the arms follows the lines of the back, and gently curve outwards. “Grand Repos” stands for “great rest” in French, and with a well-though out, elegant design, this lounge chair is sure to provide exactly that. This large fiberglass lounge chair, the “Orchidée” was one of the Cadestin models that were ordered by the Centre Pompidou Museum. The design dates to 1968 and was manufactured by Airborne International.

This chair stands out both in terms of size, as well as its design. While the fiberglass base provides a modern look, the upholstered seat, back and armrests give the chair a cosy feel. With the folding top of the seat and armrests, the chair resembles the shape of an orchid flower, which is where the model’s name derives from.

The chair has been reupholstered in a cognac coloured full aniline leather, which gives a nice contrast to the white fiberglass base. Thanks to its impressive size and soft fabric, this chair is perfect for lounging while also adding an eye-catching visual element to any space. About the designer:

Michel Cadestin was born in France in 1942. He is an interior designer and architect and through his work, he wishes to offer a functional and fun design accessible to the majority.

A prolific designer, he has experienced with diverse forms and materials during his career. His creations are varied as evidenced by the furniture intended for the Center Georges Pompidou, such as the Karate armchair (1960s) and the Orchidée lounge chair.

Cadestin studied at the famous Ecole Boulle and the National School of Decorative Arts. Following his graduation, he joined the Society of Decorative Artists. In 1970, he met Christian Ragot with whom he began researching materials such as latex foam and plastic and together, they developed concepts of housing. Cadestin had also worked for an interior design firm named Teda until 1983. He then decided to create his own firm to continue creating furniture and home furnishings. During his career, he has teamed up with Daniel Bernard with whom he designed many pieces of furniture. Cadestin worked in the art department of 1984 movie, Full Moon in Paris, in which his designs appear.

In 1988, Cadestin was awarded the René Gabriel Prize for his work (so far). Today, the French designer focuses his work on interior architecture. ~H.

This sculptural chair by French designer, Alain Gaubert is an eye-catching nod to minimalist design. The construction is as ingeniously simple as it is visually striking.

The chair is made of solid oak, and each was crafted using just two planes that intersect at the base. The exquisitely spare design of this “Africanist” chair is inspired by (as the name suggests) the “African Guardian” or “Tribal Palaver Chairs”, predominantly from the continent’s western parts. This design was made with comfort and simplicity in mind and fulfilled roles such as ‘elephant watching’ or birthing.

The modern and rustic look stems from the material and the carefully designed, sharp angles. The chair can be folded by taking the two parts apart. Similarly to the most often decorated predecessing African chairs, this one also bears the mark of the designer on the back.

Condition:

In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Some minor scratches and marks on the wood.

About the designer:

Alain Gaubert is a 20th century furniture designer, primarily known for his solid wooden designs.

From 1964 to 1969 Gaubert worked at the artisans of Marolles. The French designer then created his own cabinet workshop in 1969 under his own name. The Gaubert workshop continues the production of several of the solid wooden designs of the founder to this day. The famous 17th century Mondoubleau House in France is entirely furnished with Gaubert’s designs.

While not a lot is known about the designer, his minimalistic furniture designs have stood the test of time and are still sought after and therefore still being produced by his old workshop in France. ~H.
