Post-war European seating increasingly moved toward lighter and more flexible forms, reflecting a broader modernist interest in practicality of construction. Rather than concealing how a chair was assembled, designers emphasised the frames, experimenting with materials like plywood, die-cast aluminium, and fiberglass. This pair of armchairs reflects the time period through its crossed metal frames and suspended seating, combining utilitarian construction with a distinctly sculptural presence.
The chairs are constructed around slender metal supports that intersect beneath the seat in an X-shaped formation, giving the pieces both stability and a dynamic sense of movement. Rather than relying on heavy upholstery or enclosed forms, the seating is created through black leatherette elements attached to the frame. The backs, armrests and seats feature the original material, a testament to the vintage character of the chairs. The arm straps are suspended within the structure through brass elements connecting them to the backs and legs, allowing for a natural curve that contrasts the rigidity of the industrial materials. The gold brass hardware and finials stand out against the silver frames, adding chromatic variation. The Czech designer, Pavel Novak’s corpus of work is finally starting to surface, and as these chairs show, we are lucky to witness it. Described as a "bedroom genius" whose life and work would have deserved a completely different fate, Novak often worked with a gouge, that originally never had any other vocation than to furnish his farm.
The chairs are made of hand gouged oak, which is in itself a time-consuming and rare woodcarving technique. While most manuals offer help with fixing gouges in wood, Novak used the technique to create these rustic looking bodies that can be considered to be functional sculptures. Thanks to the unique, hand-carved texture, each lounge chair is one of a kind, with a unique pattern. The leather seat is suspended between the three legs, one of which is elongated to serve as a backrest. The chairs’ joinery technique is seamless and shows the outstanding craftsmanship and vision of Novak. The leather straps are inset into the legs in a rough, yet sophisticated way.
Rough yet sophisticated defines the overall aesthetic of these chairs, which is reflected in the pairing of the materials as well. This set of four of “Polar” lounge chairs was designed by the eminent Finnish designer, Esko Pajamies, and produced by Lahden Lepokalusto Oy Finland during the 1960s.
These leather chairs feature a half moon shaped backrest and comfortable, aesthetically pleasing cushions. The sitting cushions are tufted, and along with the upholstered armrests, have a beautiful patina. The strong and sturdy wooden frame provides a beautiful contrast to the black leather, and with the chrome plated steel connections supporting the curved armrests, it gives these chairs a modern look.
The legs have similar chrome plated steel details, which provide the chairs with an almost floating appearance. The open wooden frame further contributes to the spacious feel of the design. The chairs have their original black leather upholstery.

Esko Lauri Alvari Pajamies (born August 20, 1931 Helsinki - September 26, 1990, Eloúnta, Greece) was a Finnish designer, especially known for his upholstered livingroom and public furniture.
Pajamies graduated as an interior architect in 1954, and established his own design studio in 1961. In the 1960s, Pajamies designed the “Bonanza” couch, which combined leather and solid oak, starting the line of his characteristic mixture of materials. The “Koivutaru” armchair made of bent birch at the end of the 1970s. Pajamies’ workshop also designed furniture for the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport's passenger terminal.
The Finnish designer and architect was awarded the State Art Prize in 1979. Besides being active as a designer, Pajamies was an avid Jazz Trumpeter. ~H.

This pair of armchairs from the “Series 186” is also known as the “Lufthavns-stole” (Airport chairs). The model was designed in 1969 for Cado Collection.
The aluminium frame is without a doubt the most dominant feature of these chairs. The sturdy frame is injection-moulded and polished to resist tear and wear. The overall look, with the exposed bolts and material recalls the modern industrial style. This is softened by the padded seats and backs that are upholstered in black leather, completing the elegant, modern look.
Functionality was evidently in the focus when designing the “186” series, which comprises of seven different parts that can be used in different combinations. The variety of modules enables them to fit into any space. These “Airport Chairs” are often claimed to be made by France & Son, however, in 1966 the company was sold to Poul Cadovius, thereafter known as Cado.

About the designer:
Adrian Heath (1923-) is an architect who studied at The School of Architecture in London (1951) and was subsequently employed by Hvidt & Molgaard. Ditte Heath (1923-2004) graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts School in 1948. She had subsequent appointments in London, and in 1951-58 the couple were employed by the London Council's architectural office. In 1963, they established their own design studio, and created housing and industrial design.
In addition to designing furniture, between 1968-69 Adrian and Ditte Heath have taught at the School of Architecture at Aarhus in Denmark, training architects and designers. They have also written a series and articles on design.
They have low numbers of furniture designs for various manufacturers such as France & Son, CADO, FDB Mobler and carpenter Soren Horn. Some of their furniture are still in production to this day under the hand of carpenter master, Niels Roth Andersen. ~H.

Furthermore, the combination of the wood and saddle leather gives a strong, rustic appearance. The design marries warm, the tanned leather with pronounced stitching and joinery. And yet, the visual element that defines the chairs are the metal screw caps that fix the leather to the frame. The original saddle leather forms the seat and back, showing its sturdiness and timelessness. The cognac colour matches the wood beautifully and together with the screw caps, the rustic look is greatly enhanced by these features. Adding to the characteristic details are the wooden stretchers around the legs, with a wide and unique shape in the front.
