Guillerme et Chambron held a central place in mid-century French design, as their work bridged the gap between form and function. With their studio, Votre Maison, the duo developed a design language rooted in expressive silhouettes and a commitment to organic materials, using oak in their most iconic pieces. Their works reflects a deep respect for the art of furniture making and for the people who use their pieces, which is why their designs - like the model "Fumay" - remain so popular today.
This solid oak “Fumay” dining chair set was designed in 1965. The frames are quite distinctive; the decorative elements on the backrests show and interesting curvature that is characteristic of the designer duo. These sculptural elements paired with the tapered legs are carved out of the blonde oak in an artistic way, testifying of the quality that the duo’s company, Votre Maison became famous for. While dining chairs are generally more utilitarian types of seating, this set of six still manages to look cosy and warm thanks to the pairing of materials. The main decorative element remains the beauty of the oak wood, with its distinctive colour variation and grain. Oak's durability also contributes to the longevity of these chairs, showcasing the intersection of aesthetics and practicality inherent in mid century design. Another defining feature of these chairs lies in their expertly fitted upholstered seats, enveloped in a sumptuous greenish fabric. This choice of upholstery not only adds a touch of luxury, but also serves as a nod to comfort. The simple, warm colour palette and interesting design make this set of chairs an ideal addition to both contemporary and traditional living spaces. It is evident that Guillerme et Chambron were highly aware of body proportions, prioritising comfort just as much as the visual qualities.
Guillerme et Chambron’s models are a reference for the furniture design trends of the 1950s through the 70s. This set of dining chairs give a visual explanation why: the proportions, the subtle decorative elements, and the quality of woodworking is of the highest-quality, and the result is an immediately recognisable look that will never go out of style.
