The distinctive shape of this chair is a result of the two “ears” that encompass the sitter. The history of wingback chairs can be traced back to the 17th century when they were originally designed to provide protection from drafts in grandiose and often cold homes. With high backs and "wings" on each side to shield the sitter from cold air, these chairs became a symbol of prestige and comfort. In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Due to the nature of the wood, the item may have marks, scratches, and discolouration.
