The modernist movement in Europe found its beginnings in the roots of the Bauhaus and Functionalist movements. Bauhaus design emphasized clean, pure lines, while Functionalism sought to prioritize an object’s function over its form. These two principles, along with the rich European tradition of careful craftsmanship, shaped mid-century design and therefore, this armchair.

Adopting the trend of abandoning ornamentation to benefit the form, the designer of this chair maintained the beauty and warmth inherent to traditional cabinetmaking. From as early as the 1920s, cabinetmakers and architects frequently collaborated to produce exceptional pieces like this armchair. The chairs’ elegant curves, precise angles and structure all testify of this partnership’s success. Thanks to its low back the design appears very grounded. With straight and curving lines following each other, the design has a dynamism rooted in organicity. The slat back dominates the look from the back; this classic style features a rectilinear form and vertical slats that showcase the upholstered back cushion. The front showcases the cushions and the beautiful curvature of the armrests. The upholstered cushions are covered in a warm coloured fabric with rope lining and button tufting. The slender legs are straight in the front and bent in the back to provide structural stability.

Unlike designs from outside the continent, European designers’ products weren’t flashy but designed to be well-made and to fit a warm, comfortable and welcoming home. As this armchair exemplifies, blending functionality, good quality natural materials and organic colours with excellent craftsmanship is the key to the success of mid-century modernism.
