The “Laila” model by the Finnish designer, Ilmari Lappalainen, originates from 1948, with the earliest original drawings kept in the Lahti City Museum in their Lappalainen Collection.
This pair of armchairs are from the Finnish designer’s most famous series called “Laila”. The design became sought after by collectors even in its production time, which is quite rare in the case of Nordic mid-century modern furniture. Lappalainen was a renowned designer, famous for his designs’ comfort. Some of his designs even received medical approval because they had such a good seating, that it prevented back problems. These armchairs have a cosy modern style, modelled on the Swedish and Danish furniture of the time, including the round edges and generous seat cushions and back with five tufted buttons. The bodies have the classic Nordic look, which explains the contemporary popularity of these armchairs both among the public and museums. The modern aesthetic is further elevated by the soft sheepskin upholstery that complements the shape and the wooden, tapered legs as well.
Wood is omnipresent in the Nordics, and Finnish woodworking is world-famous for its traditions. These chairs were created for Asko, the Finnish furniture manufacturing company founded in 1918 by Aukusti Asko Avonius, known for the production of high-quality furniture. By 1930, the company had developed into the largest furniture chain in Finland and the largest supplier of furniture in the Scandinavian countries. Favourites of this time included Ilmari Lappalainen’s present Laila armchairs.

Strongly influenced by the functional forms of the Bauhaus school in Germany, Danish designers led the way in furniture design during the 1950s. They combined the inspiration brought by new industrial technologies with minimalist design. This style became so influential that it is recognized as a design movement in itself, entitled Danish Design with a subgroup known as Danish Modern.
Danish Modern focused more on the aesthetics of modern design whilst employing the exquisite technique and material familiarity of highly skilled craftsmen such as cabinetmakers. This armchair is a great example of the style with its clean and pure lines coupled with craftsmanship and delicate research into proportions, materials and the requirements of the human body. Adopting the trend of abandoning ornamentation to benefit the form, this chair’s designer and manufacturer both maintained the beauty and warmth inherent to traditional Danish cabinetmaking. The body has gentle, rounded lines that are visible even through the luscious upholstery. The round edges even apply to the wooden feet in the front, which are referred to as “bun feet” which is a shape of a flattened sphere. The modern aesthetic is further elevated by the textured, premium upholstery that complements the shape and the wooden feet as well. Sheepskin is the ultimate material for comfort, warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It elevates the sheer size and shape of the chair, especially around the edges.
From every single angle, this armchair offers stunning lines and a rich texture. Above all, Danish designers believed that design could certainly be used to improve people's lives. Looking at this armchair, this was evidently and too far-fetched ideal.

This beautiful Danish lounge chair is an early example of Scandinavian mid-century modern design as well as outstanding craftsmanship with a quality that honours the materials and users. The period from roughly the 1940s through the 1960s was a high point for Danish furniture makers, and this chair shows why.
Designed in the early phase of what we know today as mid-century modern, this lounge chair is a Danish delicacy with a unique look. With its classic shape paired with modern design elements, it combines the best design characteristics of the 1940s. The large, enveloping backrest dictates the shape of this chair, as it forms most of the structure, including the armrests. The curvature creates an inviting and open look, enhanced by the soft sheepskin upholstery. The inside of the upholstered back is sectioned which creates a shell-like look. The thick, bun feet-like front legs are a pleasant touch. The warm brown colour of the stained wood nicely contrasts to the off-white sheepskin, not to mention the thick wooden feet make a long-lasting, rock solid foundation for any chair. The chair’s back legs differ, they are straight, which is an eccentric detail that adds visual interest. Master cabinetmakers were highly aware of body proportions, prioritising comfort just as much as the visual qualities, therefore this lounge chair provides support for the back and great sitting comfort.
Perfectly suited for a vintage or contemporary interior, this chair represents a marriage of artistry and comfort. Its upholstery captures attention, adding warmth and vibrancy to any space, while the wooden feet are grounding, together making this piece into an ideal statement piece.

Rach Finazzi, an Italian designer active from the late 20th century, is recognised for a distinctive approach to furniture-making that merges geometric structures with unique materials. Finazzi’s work often explores unconventional forms and material contrasts, from glass to metal and wood, resulting in pieces that command attention both as functional furniture and as sculptural statements.
This geometric dining chair is a quintessential example of Finazzi’s design ethos, the chair is characterised by a striking interplay between an angular metal framework, natural wood, and plush sheepskin. The chair rests on slender, black metal legs that intersect to create a dynamic, sculptural base, flowing into the arms. The composition feels both visually light and structurally stable. Adding to the design, the backrest is crafted from solid wood in a dramatically tapered, triangular form. The back introduces an architectural element that draws the eye upward, establishing a visual dialogue between the angular metal structure and the natural wood grain. To fully drive in the textural juxtaposition, the seat is upholstered in longhair sheepskin, adding a warm, inviting texture that contrasts beautifully with the cool, industrial feel of the metal frame and the earthy wooden backrest.
More than just seating, this dining chair functions as a sculptural piece that showcases Finazzi’s ability to harmonise disparate materials and forms. The combination of materials creates a compelling visual and tactile experience, showcasing the skill and creativity of Italian craftsmanship. Whether arranged around a dining table with other pieces or displayed as a standalone accent piece, the chair encapsulates a bold design language, merging functionality with a strong artistic presence.

Danish Modernism can be visually described by this beautiful wing-back chair: sleek, organic and timeless. These attributes are met with high quality materials and the famous craftsmanship of the country’s cabinetmakers. This chair is a testament to the quality and craftsmanship of Villy Sørensen.
From the welcoming winged body and the solid wood frame to the cosy sheepskin upholstery, this chair expresses a quality of hygge and a feeling of contentment. The distinctive shape is a result of the two “ears” that encompass the sitter. One of the most notable chair styles that embodies Scandinavian modern design is the wing-back chair. The history of this type of chair can be traced back to the 17th century when they were originally designed to provide protection from drafts in grandiose, often chilly, European homes. With high backs and "wings" on each side to shield the sitter from cold air, these chairs were originally a symbol of prestige and comfort. To balance the sculptural, upholstered body is the beautiful solid wood frame that is left exposed on the sides as it also functions as a decorative element with its geometric angles and curves. The arms and tapered legs are formed from the same piece of wood resulting in a sleek impression. The wood’s colour and smooth surface contrast brilliantly with the sheepskin’s light colour and texture. Thanks to the properties of the sheepskin, this chair provides great, soft comfort as well.
Villy Sørensen had a unique design idiom, which is clearly visible in this model: function, durability, timeless design, and perhaps above all, comfort. This traditional yet playful chair combines all of these attributes, which makes it ideal to be the stylish focal point of any space.

This armchair and footstool exudes quality and personality from all angles. The basic Danish design principles are all present - the pair is functional, simple at its core, well-crafted, and free of unnecessary ornamentation. During the 1950s, Danish makers led the way in furniture design, with seating pieces to this day being some of the most iconic of their time, and this model is no exception.
The generous seat and back of the armchair are welcoming, with the latter curving in such an angle that the sitter is gently “hugged”. This type of backrest style is called a wingback, originally, it was created as a way to help shield a person from drafts of cold air, and to trap the heat from a fireplace. That is why wingback chairs are sometimes called fireside chairs, as it was a popular style of chair to have pulled up in front of or flanking a fireplace. The embracing back and the curved arms create a welcoming impression, while the back’s elongated corners create visual interest. The generous padded armrests add another layer of relaxation for the sitter, and the luxurious, soft sheepskin upholstery provides great comfort in the name of functionality, while also transforming the chair into a beautiful addition to any interior space. Sheepskin is the ultimate material for comfort, warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The production quality is evident throughout this pair and takes the mid-century idea of “furniture that last for generations” seriously.
The design of this armchair and footstool promotes relaxation and contentment, inviting one to sit back and enjoy a moment of peace. The understated elegance and natural tones create an alluring atmosphere, making it perfect for the purpose of evoking a hyggelig (cosy) environment in any home.

Around the middle of the 20th century Danish furniture design began blending the streamlined elegance of modernism with the inviting charm of skilled craftsmanship. This period celebrated functionality, comfort, and organic forms by creating pieces that were as practical as they were beautiful.
This chair and ottoman pair showcases an organic look which is grounded and cosy. To keep the pair from being overcrowded visually, the design is kept simple with gently rounded lines and no other form of decoration. An impressive aspect of this chair and ottoman is that the craftsmanship expected from Danish cabinetmakers is still visible despite the full coverage of the fabric. The shape of the chair resembles that of a club chair with a wide and open profile where the arms and back are on the same level. Thanks to this, the sheepskin upholstery truly stands out; the colour and texture pairs very well with the smooth outlines of both pieces. This effect is further enhanced when the chair and ottoman are placed together as a set. The overall design values simplicity in both form and function, leaving the emphasis on the upholstery.
The most traditional use for this type of pair is in the living room, but they work especially well in an open floor plan. The early mid-century modern aesthetic lends itself well to most styles as it is timelessly elegant and high-quality in terms of materials and execution. In the case of this chair and ottoman, they are guaranteed to stand out no matter their placement or surroundings.

Designed by Henning Kjaernulf, this so-called “kurulstol” or kurul chair, is an iconic model by Danish designer, Henning Kjærnulf. The Kurul chair is an ancient folding chair, originally a folding stool with straight or curved legs. Among the Romans, in addition to being an ordinary utility chair, it was symbolically linked to officials, often within the judiciary.
This armchair combines the traditional kurul structure with a rounded and curved appearance with an upholstered seat and backrest that gives the historic look a modern edge. The oak frame is carved and sculpted in an unmistakeable way, showing the skills of both the designer and the manufacturer. The body is composed of two slats of wood of equal length in the front and back, fastened together in a saltire formation (resembling the letter X) which are extended up at the top and back to form the armrests and the backs as well. The seat, upholstered in soft sheepskin, is stretched between the front and back slats connecting the two. Kjærnulf removed the folding function of the historic design, giving his model a more stable, organic look. This impression is further enhanced by the solid oak, which is carved with great precision into straight and curving lines. The rich sheepskin melts these carved and straight lines together, contrasting to the oak’s smoothness. While the historic kurul chair was often decorated with intarsia, this model only showcases subtle decor elements such as the scalloped bridge under the seat, and the curving armrests.
While the kurulstol is a Renaissance classic originating from ancient Rome, thanks to Kjaernulf, Scandinavian modernism remains at the core of the design. Kjærnulf’s designs are easy to spot in a crowd thanks to his originality, making his pieces like the razorblade chair and this model eternally unique. This chair was manufactured by EG Kvalitetsmobel in Denmark during the 1960s.
Condition:
In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Some minor scratches and marks on the wood. The chair has been reupholstered recently in premium sheepskin.
Dimensions:
24.8 in W x 26.77 in D x 31.29 in H; Seat height 17.32 in; Arm height 26.18 in
63 cm W x 68 cm D x 79.5 cm H; Seat height 44 cm; Arm height 66.5 cm
About the designer:
Danish mid-century designer and architect, Henning Kjaernulf is somewhat of a mystery. A lot more is known about his designs than Kjaernulf himself. His wooden designs, crafted to perfection, speak for themselves. Kjaernulf mainly designed for the Danish manufacturers EG Kvalitetsmøbel, Nyrup Møbelfabrik, and Vejle Stole Møbelfabrik. The latter produced the designer’s well-known teak extending dining table design. The historic archives of the Danish municipality, Stenlille, reveal the history of Nyrup Møbelfabrik, mentioning Kjaernulf’s architectural designs for the company’s factory, referring to him as an architect based in Odense, Denmark.
Kjaernulf’s works reveal quality craftsmanship throughout, featuring clean Danish modern era lines with sculpted edges and shapes. The unique shapes, like his razorblade chair backrests, distinguish the designer from other Danish mid-century designers.
In light of how sought after his dining sets and lounge chairs are, it remains a mystery why so little is known about the designer. The curious background of Kjaernulf if anything, adds more charm to his pieces. ~H.

It is known that Jindřich Halabala firmly believed that the furniture he created was to be functional, modular, and flawlessly-crafted, and this rare armchair stands as evidence of that. This model exemplifies why Halabala's work is considered to be a connection between innovative Czech cubism from the 1910s, Art Deco from the early 1920s and European modern art post WWII.
Halabala was a key figure in the interwar functionalist movement, and sought to bring high-quality, affordable modern furniture to a wider audience. The designer’s chairs such as this one carriey elements from art deco as well as early mid-century design, resulting in a unique and immediately recognisable aesthetic that’s based on daring shapes and forms. This model features a sensual curved wooden frame that contrasts beautifully with the angular, fully upholstered seat and back. The dynamic form is both sculptural and ergonomic, offering visual interest and inviting comfort. The longhair sheepskin is a visual treat that adds a luxurious, tactile presence to the chair. The material is attention-grabbing as it envelops the entire piece which enhances the form and adds warmth and softness to the overall design.
The outstanding visual characteristic of this armchair is both traditional and modern, making it simply timeless. This is precisely the charm of Jindřich Halabala pieces, the effortless style paired with the highest quality of materials and craftsmanship.

About the designer:
Jindřich Halabala (May 24, 1903 Koryčany - November 18, 1978 Brno) was a Czech furniture designer, theorist, publicist and pedagogue. He was especially famous for his designs of stylish furniture for the Brno UP plants from 1925 to 1955, where he worked as a chief designer. Thanks to this position, he fundamentally influenced the appearance of interwar and post-war Czech households.
Jindřich Halabala was born on May 24, 1903 in Koryčany to the family of carpenter Štěpán Halabala, whose craft he learned in a family business between 1918 and 1920. He then joined the State Czechoslovak Vocational School for Wood Processing in Valašské Meziříčí, which he graduated from two years later. After school, he started practicing at the United UP races, where he met their founder Jan Vaňek. In 1922 he also began to study architecture at the School of Applied Arts in Prague, specializing in furniture and interiors with prof. Pavel Janák. He completed his studies in 1926. In the same year, he created the first designs for furniture and carpets. In 1927, he was briefly employed in Bohumil Hübschmann's studio in Prague, and in 1928 he finally joined the United UP plant as the head of the Prague store in the Lucerna Palace. In 1927, Jindřich Halabala married Pavla Sekerková, with whom he had two sons; in 1929 son Jindra and in 1935 son Ivan. In 1930, he was transferred to the Brno headquarters of the United UP plant as head of the studio, where he worked in various positions (procurator, director) until 1946, and thus fundamentally contributed to a comprehensive concept of production, promotion, and sales. Later, he became interested in passing on his knowledge to future generations and between 1951 and 1954 he lectured externally at the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Engineering at the VŠPDI in Košice. In 1954, he was appointed an extraordinary (and a year later also a full) professor and began his long-term work at the Faculty of Wood Science of the University of Forestry and Wood Technology in Zvolen, where he founded and headed the Research Institute. He worked here until 1970, when he retired.
Halabala's work is considered to be a connection between innovative Czech cubism from 1910, art deco from the early 1920s and European modern art after the Second World War. His commercially successful designs were strongly based on the design of the Bauhaus. Halabala designed a variety of furniture, including chairs, tables, sideboards, chests of drawers, flower stands, coffee tables and lamps. Especially his legendary chair H-79 with frames made of bent steel tubes and his armchair type H-269 enjoyed great popularity.

This “Clam” chair has a beloved design thanks to which it is considered by many as one of the most attractive chairs of Nordic Design. At the same time, this chair is arguably also the most mysterious piece on the Danish furniture market.
The model has a rather perplexing history, and has been attributed to several designers before, the latest being the Danish architect Phillip Arctander. However, recent research revealed that the “Clam” is the model that in fact started the story of Madsen & Schubell. Arnold Madsen designed this model in 1944 in his small basement workshop in Gothersgade, Copenhagen.
This chair has a characteristic organic shape with soft curves, perched on club-shaped beech legs. The name comes from the shape of the seat and back that together form the silhouette of an open clam. The round armrests compliment the overall round feel of the chair. The seat is slightly raised towards the front, while the back is tilted to provide great sitting comfort. The seat and back are covered in light sheepskin, adding to the soft and cosy feel of this “Clam”. Interestingly, Hans Schubell invented the special connecting piece of this chair, formed from only one piece of wood. The rest of the seat and backrest were glued to this single piece.
In 1944, the chair was already exhibited in conjunction with the presentation of the newly opened furniture store NY FORM A/S in Copenhagen, which sold the leading design of the day. In 1945, the Clam went into serial production as the first model of the new furniture company Madsen & Schubell and many well-known stores soon included Madsen & Schubell in their product range. Illums Bolighus was one of them, as were the Messen department store and the Copenhagen furniture store Nordisk Staal-og-Møbel Central. In 1953, Madsen & Schubell sold the licence of the chair to the Norwegian company Vik and Blindheim.

67 cm W x 84.5 cm D x 82 cm H; Seat height 38 cm; Arm height 57.5 cm
About the designer:
Henry Hans Schubell was born on February 23. 1906 in Elsinore, Denmark. After completing school, he became an apprentice cabinetmaker in Elsinore. After 5 years he finished his apprenticeship, and was awarded a medal for his work. When he turned 20, he moved to Copenhagen, where he worked for various cabinetmakers. In 1929, at the age of 23, he was employed as a foreman at the cabinetmakers Winter & Winding, where he supervised the production of furniture until 1945.
In 1944, the firm received a request from an upholsterer named Arnold Madsen, who had an idea for a chair. Madsen was having difficulties finding a cabinetmaker with the required skills to do the woodwork based on Madsen’s little plaster model. Henry Schubell succeeded in producing the wooden frame, making it possible for the chair to be put into production. Arnold Madsen was so impressed by his work that he suggested forming a partnership where Henry Schubell would design the furniture and produce the wooden frames, which Arnold Madsen would then upholster and market. The workshop was realized in the inner city of Copenhagen, and their joint venture was named “Madsen & Schubell”.
The cooperation between Henry Schubell and Arnold Madsen was so successful that they purchased a factory building on the outskirts of Copenhagen. Over the next 20 years, the company produced several successful models, most of which were designed by Henry Schubell. Some of these chairs were licensed to the Norwegian company Vik & Blindheim and to the Dutch company Bovenkamp.
The cooperation between the two ended in 1963, and by mutual agreement, Arnold Madsen established his new upholstery firm under the name “Madsen og Schubell”, in cooperation with his son, Ib Madsen. In the 1970s, Ib took over the company which still ran under the name Madsen & Schubell causing some confusion about the attribution of Madsen & Schubell models. ~H.

The rise of Danish furniture is deeply rooted in the transformative shift in design philosophy during and post-World War II. Danish designers turned limitations into creative opportunities, creating lightweight, robust, and aesthetically pleasing furnishings. The construction of this mid-century lounge chair revolves around the use of high-quality materials, comfort, and the mastery of the era’s Danish cabinetmakers. The design is focused on the aesthetics of modernism whilst employing the exquisite technique and material familiarity of the highly skilled craftsmen. This chair in many ways transcends the word ‘modern’, thanks to its unique look.
The organically-shaped seat gives this chair a sculptural and striking appearance. The body is formed like a nest that hugs the sitter. The wide seat and low armrests are not separated, rather, they are united and create an open and welcoming look. The legs are quite simplistic, which is a great design choice that contrast with the voluptuousness of the upholstery, letting it stand out. One of the features that is echoed throughout the majority of Scandinavian furniture designs is stark contrast. Designers often choose to emphasize this by featuring bold colors alongside natural materials, which is highlighted in the material choice of this chair. The material choice of wood for the legs is very characteristic of the era. Thanks to its well-thought-out construction and proportions, the sitting comfort is also outstanding.
This lounge chair is the perfect illustration of how the mixture of Danish craftsmanship, high-quality materials, and luxurious upholstery create exceptional pieces.

This beautiful Danish armchair recalls the peak of Danish mid-century modern design. Thanks to its curved shape and luxurious materials, this model is exceptionally cosy and elegant. Armchairs like this are statement pieces in any space, but they can also adapt to a variety of styles thanks to their universal appeal.
The distinct look of this chair is the result of the brilliant pairing of materials. The wooden structure’s smooth lines stand out against the textural sheepskin, while also accentuating the unique look of the upholstery. The soft fibres of the lightweight, feathery sheepskin drape beautifully over this chair, while the warm brown colour of the wood adds depth. The desire to keep functionality and comfort at the core of the design is also visible, especially in the gently angled back legs that connect with the arms. The armrests have a peculiar shape, with perfectly sculpted curves to accommodate the sitter. Their smooth surface is greatly elevated next to the sheepskin, complementing each other’s unique qualities. Serving the level of comfort even further is the elongated seat that is perfect for lounging. This pair of spectacular armchairs by Swedish designer, Svante Skogh, is a rather rare example of the interior and furniture designer’s repertoire. With a creative and masterfully crafted wooden structure, these chairs deserve the limelight in Swedish design history.
These chairs combine function and aesthetic in a striking manner, keeping the form in service of the user while keeping it elegant and modern. The union of the shell-shaped body and the back legs’ structure define this model. While made of entirely different materials, their lines manage to resemble and complement each other, resulting in a harmonious appearance. The back legs not only support the bodies, but also rise to form the support for the armrests. The clear lined frame of this pair contrasts beautifully with the angled seating and gives the pair an open and very photographic appearance. The armrests’ black paint is a small, but ingenious detail, that highlights their form and create a focal point. Due to the well-chosen proportions, angled back, and the high-quality of the design, the chairs are very comfortable.
In Sweden, “svensk design” (Swedish design) in particular operates as a set of relations linking the everyday world - composed of objects, spaces, people - to the cultural ideologies that motivate the persistence of a social democratically infused “way of life.” Thanks to this sentiment, cabinetmakers, like Förenade Möbelfabrikerna, put an emphasis on soft elegance and functionality, making these chairs timeless in every sense of the word.

Art Deco was an era-defining movement in furniture design. During its heyday, it represented luxury, glamour, exuberance and faith in social and technological progress. European furniture designers’ artistic approach was anchored by refinement, expressed through graceful forms and traditional methods. The mix of boldness and richness became central to European Art Deco interiors, where furniture was expected to contribute atmosphere as much as function.
These chairs illustrate the bold aesthetic of the first half of the 20th century. Art Deco designers and cabinetmakers coupled geometry and craftsmanship to create elegantly impressive pieces like this pair. The construction of this stunning pair features high-quality materials, from the wooden frame to the soft upholstery. The frames are defined by the sweeping and sleek arms that curve outward and downward in a flowing motion. Their striking appearance is the result of the brilliant pairing of materials; the solid wood structures’ polished lines stand out against the textural, organic sheepskin while also accentuating the individuality of the upholstery. The long-haired fabric gives the chairs an almost organic appearance while emphasizing comfort and warmth.
As a pair, these armchairs stand as striking examples of European craftsmanship. The thoughtful design, from the choice of materials to the thoughtful details, ensures that these chairs are as much a work of art as they are functional seating, enhancing the comfort and aesthetic value of any space. As relics of a pivotal time in design history, they continue to inspire and captivate, embodying the enduring appeal of modernist and Art Deco principles.

Italian Modern furniture is defined by unique design, perfect execution, and exclusivity. Modernist Italian designers’ language was always coherent with current times and congenial to the wisdom of furniture manufacturing, representing an outpost of strong innovation in the panorama of Italian craftsmanship.
This pair is focused on elegant and measured proportions, balanced compositions, and refined décor elements including the exclusive materials. The versatile shapes, from the rounded edges on the top to the square, unattached armrests and tapered legs make these chairs stand out. The V-shaped high backs are visually defining thanks to their sheer size and unusual shape. The enveloping backs become narrower towards the seat, like elegant, slim necks, with the sides flowing into the armrests, creating a structured, but still flowing angle and impression. The beautiful, richly textured bouclé fabric brings out the versatility of the shapes even further, and contrasts the solid wood legs as well. The backs are decorated with seven, yellow cross stitches arranged symmetrically, which further adds to the modern edge.
The 1960s’ Italy was especially passionate about furniture and product design, an area where the country remained faithful to a figurative repertoire of substantial classicism, while not disdaining impulses of authentic modernity. Similar designs are commonly attributed to Paolo Buffa, who - like many of his contemporaries - was extremely active in the Milanese design scene that was just as vibrant as these chairs. In an atmosphere committed to the reinterpretation of the Lombard classicism and Milanese architecture, exceptional pieces were created as this pair shows.

These side chairs originate from Europe in the 1960s, a period defined by a renewed appreciation for natural materials, functional craftsmanship, and honest construction. Mid-century European design moved away from excess ornamentation in favour of clarity, comfort, and durability. Oak furniture from this era reflects a balance between modernist restraint and timeless handcraft, highlighting structure and material.
This pair is crafted from solid wood, featuring softly rounded frames with gently curved arms and ladder-style backrests that emphasize both strength and comfort, while also showcasing gently carved contours. The warm tone of the wood highlights the natural grain, adding visual depth and character to the clean, architectural structure. The proportions are generous, offering an embracing seat. The slightly splayed legs and cross-stretchers provide stability. Moreover, the seats are upholstered in rich sheepskin, introducing a contrasting texture that softens the overall design and enhances comfort. The use of this material aligns the chairs with the decade’s interest in warmth, tactility, and elegance. The organic surface of the hide adds subtle textural and visual variation, making the pair feel like a focal point of any space. “Danish Modern” is a recognized term around the world, standing for the characteristic style of Danish design created during the 20th century. As these lounge chairs show, furniture created in this period are characterized by clarity in design, and extremely high-quality craftsmanship and choice of materials.
This pair of lounge chairs exudes quality and personality from all angles. Their classic shape is formed by the generous seat and embracing back. The large, curved backrests feature tufted buttons and follow the curve of the voluptuous seats, creating an inviting and open look which is a signature characteristic of Danish Modernism. The tufting stitches are festooned with thirteen, symmetrically arranged buttons on each chair, that sink into the soft upholstery. The tapered, lacquered wood legs prevent the chairs from looking heavy by slightly lifting them off the ground, while their warm brown colour nicely contrasts the soft, light colour of the bodies. The back legs are splayed to provide structural support to the chairs.
Thanks to the sheepskin, the chairs give a natural, textured look, making them ideal to blend a stroke of modernity to any space, with a nod to organic, simple artistry. Sheepskin is the ultimate material for comfort, warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The artisanal production quality is evident throughout this pair and takes the Danish idea of “furniture that last for generations” seriously.

About the Designer:
The practical and comfortable designs of Danish cabinetmakers defined mid-20th century modern seating. The Danish Cabinetmakers focused on minimalist design executed by expertly skilled craftsmen.
Works from the Danish Cabinet-Makers' Guild is a concept of its own in collectible design. The Cabinet-Makers' Guild began annual exhibitions in 1927 in Copenhagen. The group formed an exhibit showing each year in October the quality furniture made to drawings by gifted architects. The exhibition took place each year, without interruption, for forty years. A number of successful Danish Design collaborations were formed during this time between cabinetmakers and architects.
Danish Modernism has influenced Scandinavian furniture to a great degree, defined by minimalism, simplicity, and functionality. The muted colours and gentle designs make Danish mid-century furniture an ideal addition to contemporary living spaces. Additionally, master cabinetmakers were highly aware of body proportions, prioritizing comfort just as much as the visual qualities.
The works of master cabinetmakers – such as this chair – are of the highest quality, both in terms of materials and craftsmanship. Cabinetmakers take the art of working with wood one step further, and focus on the finer details of what can be created with the material. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that numerous master cabinetmakers are part of the renowned Danish Culture Canon (Danish: Kulturkanonen). The canon contains no more than 108 works of cultural excellence, based on works with a useful function and that are still recognizable today. This small armchair is the perfect illustration of Danish design, and the work of a true cabinetmaker. ~H.

The “Laila” model by the Finnish designer Ilmari Lappalainen originates from 1948, with the earliest original drawings kept in the Lahti City Museum in their Lappalainen Collection.
This pair of “nr. 238” armchairs are from the Finnish designer’s most famous series called “Laila”. The design became sought after by collectors even in its production time, which is quite rare in the case of Nordic mid-century modern furniture. Lappalainen was a renowned designer, famous for his designs’ comfort. Some of his designs even received medical approval because they had such a good seating that it prevented back problems. These armchairs have a cosy modern style, modelled on the Swedish and Danish furniture of the time, including the round edges and generous seat cushion and back with tufted buttons. The bodies have the classic Nordic look, which explains the contemporary popularity of these armchairs both among the public and museums. The modern aesthetic is further elevated by the textured, premium upholstery that complements the shape and the wooden, tapered legs as well. Sheepskin is the ultimate material for comfort, warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It elevates the sheer size and shape of the chair, especially its back.
Wood is omnipresent in the Nordics, and Finnish woodworking is world-famous for its traditions. These chairs were created for Asko, the Finnish furniture manufacturing company founded in 1918 by Aukusti Asko Avonius, known for the production of high-quality furniture. By 1930 the company had developed into the largest furniture chain in Finland and the largest supplier of furniture in the Scandinavian countries. After the war, the damage it caused and the new homes of Karelian migrants concentrated production on essential furniture, which the Finnish Ministry of Public Affairs ordered to sell at an affordable price. Favourites of this time included Ilmari Lappalainen’s Laila series.

About the Designer:
Ilmari Lappalainen (1918 - 2006) was a great Finnish designer whose most active working years were from the end of the 1940s until the end of the 1970s.
Lappalainen first graduated as a teacher of woodworking in 1939, followed by a degree in interior design in 1947. By the end of the school of interior design, he was already working as an intern in Asko and after graduating he got a permanent design position at the company. Lappalainen worked as a teacher and as an interior designer for Asko's department stores, public spaces and hotels.
Lappalainen's most popular products / series are the Laila sofa set, the Seija rocking chair, the lazy castle Rex and the Pulkka armchair. The unique stained beech frames are a visual delight, with subtle decorative elements that distinguish this pair from other models of the era. Without worrying about short-lived trends and what other people thought, Hörlin-Holmquist created her models with such precision and creativity that still makes them collectible pieces. Thanks to her unique vision, these chairs have unmistakable backs and sides comprised of symmetrically arranged spindles. As the backs and armrests sit relatively low, the chairs have an open look. The sheepskin upholstery of the back and seat cushions elevate the visual comfort.

About the Designer:
Kerstin Hörlin-Holmquist was born on May 30, 1925 in Arvika, Sweden. She was a Swedish modernist architect and designer. Hörlin-Holmquist graduated from Stockholm’s Konstfack in 1952, and before that she studied and worked in England.
She often worked with her husband Erik Holmquist, and together they modelled and created the pieces together. A key aspect for the couple was always to test their designs in their own home before completing a project.
"I think both furniture and textiles, wherever they end up, must be kind, gentle and courteous, but without losing their character. They should have human qualities, not be pompous and only stand alone, but be able to adapt to the environment they end up in..."
Hörlin-Holmquist worked and studied in England from 1946-1947 immediately after the war, where she also studied art history and became fascinated with the classic English upholstered furniture and style. Something that without a doubt inspired her own creations later in life while she still developed her own expression. She returned to Sweden where she attended Konstfack from 1948 and graduated from the school in 1952. She started working with Nordiska Kompaniet shortly after her graduation and became a lead designer. Her timeless and iconic ‘Paradiset Collection’ was created during her employment with Nordiska Kompaniet in 1956-1957 and holds a soft simplicity and a uniqueness in its appearance - light, clean lines and yet gracious with an air of romance.
Today, her designs are highly treasured collectibles. She is primarily remembered, for her ability to create designs for the modern home in the 1950s without worrying about short-lived trends and what other people thought - to stay true to her own unique and humanistic design vision.

The mid-20th century marked a golden era for interior design, amidst a booming economy and a newfound sense of optimism. Designers sought to create furniture that felt both modern and human, moving away from the stark metal and glass of the machine age toward objects that could bring warmth and comfort to domestic life.
This cultural moment celebrated furniture not just as a utilitarian object, but as a meaningful presence in the home. This pair of lounge chairs is a striking embodiment of that philosophy. Each chair features a solid wood frame with strong, sculptural lines. The X-shaped side-supports lend both structural stability and visual lightness, while highlighting the craftsmanship of this pair. Not only this, but the precise joinery and the gently splayed back legs which transition seamlessly into the armrests give the chairs a sense of balance and quiet confidence. Their seats and backs are upholstered in thick, natural sheepskin, a material prized for its softness, warmth, and inviting tactile quality. The creamy, textural surface of the upholstery contrasts beautifully with the robust wooden frame, highlighting the inherent character of both materials. They show how mid century designers achieved harmony between simplicity and luxury, function and expression.
Together, these chairs offer more than just a place to sit; they express the postwar European shift toward modern living. With their natural materials and inviting form, they feel as relevant and desirable today as when they were first made, all while reflecting an ideal blend of sculptural beauty, masterful craftsmanship, and timeless comfort.

These “Grand Pedro” armchairs show the curviness that defined the design of the 1950s. Hiort af Ornäs developed this model for his own furniture company, Puunveisto Oy.
The “Grand Pedro” model has a soft, sculptural shape paired with an ergonomic construction, which is very representative of the designer’s beliefs. Hiort af Ornäs was very firm about two things regarding his chair designs: the sitting comfort and that the model must look good from every single angle. “Pedro” fulfils these principles, for as even from the bottom, it showcases the elongated, tapered back legs that are visually captivating. The bodies have a welcoming look, with outward curving armrests and slightly bent backrests. In service of utmost comfort are the seat cushions that ensure sitting comfort, and the sheepskin upholstery that is extremely soft. The light colour and texture of the sheepskin complements the lacquered wood legs beautifully, highlighting their sculptural lines.
The craftsmanship and quality provided by Hiort af Ornäs is very visible in the “Pedro” collection that includes a sofa besides these chairs. The seating designs of the architect/designer have been gradually more and more recognized world-wide, which resulted in the recent exhibition titled “Forgotten Ornäs”.

74 cm W x 72 cm D x 83 cm H; Seat height 44 cm
About the designer:
Carl-Gustaf Vilhelm (nicknamed “Nalle”) Hiort of Ornäs was born on 27 February 1911 and lived most of his life in Tapiola/Espoo in Finland and in his later life moved to Spain. He is remembered as a Finnish interior architect and designer known to be uncompromising.
Before the Finnish wars (1939-1944), Hiort af Ornäs spent his time in Pori, working at Björneborgs Mekaniska Verkstad. He studied at the Helsinki University of Technology to become an architect but never graduated. He did, however, become known as an interior designer, and eventually even more known as a furniture designer.
In 1945, Hiort af Ornäs founded the furniture company Puunveisto Oy, for which he developed versatile techniques for shaping plywood. He started the furniture manufacturing shop on Lauttasaari in Helsinki (Veneentekijäntie 14) together with his brother. The wood shop, showroom and office were all located in the same building in Helsinki. Rolf Mesterton was the man in charge of producing the furniture, but there were several other carpenters at work in the woodshop. Hiort af Ornäs’s furniture was exhibited and sold by the shop Nupponen who also distributed Olavi Hänninen’s designs, while Puunveisto’s furniture were also sold by Gösta Westerbergs Möbler in Stockholm, Sweden but, in spite of a good selection of chairs, tables and shelves, did not do too well. Since production costs were high, Hiort af Ornäs faced economic troubles. The company was later sold to Nupponen after which Hiort af Ornäs’s interest in the company waned.
Hiort af Ornäs spent his retirement in Spain, and designed several buildings for Fuengirola’s Los Pacos neighbourhood, which has a large Finnish population. His house that he drew and built in Tapiola, Espoo, Finland, ‘Villa Hiort’, still stands and houses some of the designer’s original drawings. It is a beautiful example of 1950s Modernism and the talent of Hiort af Ornäs that brought him recognition that lasts to this day. ~H.

This stunning pair of European armchairs, crafted in the 20th century, epitomises the timeless allure of modern design. Fine materials and seamless craftsmanship come together to create an undeniably striking look while maintaining its functionality.
Fully upholstered in long, plush white sheepskin, it is undoubtedly the most eye-catching characteristic of the set. Not only is the sheepskin an especially beautiful choice of upholstery, but it also ensures durability through its quality. These wooden accents are not only visually appealing but also add a sense of practicality and further increase the longevity of the pair, ensuring the armrests remain pristine and functional for years to come. This pair of easy chairs exemplifies the craftsmanship of Swedish modern furniture and its understated luxury. The 1940s saw a departure from the ornate and glamorous Art Deco era toward a more refined and functional design period. While this period did not shy away from luxury, there was a more natural and organic feel to it thanks to increased use of wood and other natural materials.
This stunning pair of easy chairs, crafted in the manner of Erik Bertin Karlen, embodies organic elegance and tactile richness. The chairs feature a rather simple silhouette and since nature was a great source of inspiration during the making of this pair, sharp edges or corners can rarely be found. Without any ornamentation, the focus is on the rounded, flowing lines of the bodies and the luxurious upholstery. The longhair sheepskin features rich, warm tones that add chromatic texture to the chairs. Thanks to the colour variation of the sheepskin, the chairs can lend an earthy and cosy presence to any room in which they are placed. This material not only reflects the Swedish commitment to high quality materials but also showcases the design prowess of the era’s cabinetmakers. Furthermore, architectural precision is present in the subtle wingback backrests, which offer the sitter a charming embrace, even in the absence of armrests. It is this absence of armrests which emphasizes the open and inviting form, while allowing for the focus to remain on the materials. Supported by tapered wooden legs, this pair achieves a beautifully balanced aesthetic.
These easy chairs stand as a testament to the enduring appeal of Swedish design, and its philosophy of simplicity, comfort, and material integrity. Whether placed as accent chairs or as a focal point they are sure to add a touch of quiet luxury to any space.

This pair of geometric dining chairs is a quintessential example of Finazzi’s design ethos, they are characterised by a striking interplay between angular metal frameworks, natural wood, and plush sheepskin. The chairs rest on slender, black metal legs that intersect to create a dynamic, sculptural base, flowing into the arms. The composition feels both visually light and structurally stable. Adding to the design, the backrests are crafted from solid wood in a dramatically tapered, triangular form. The backs introduce an architectural element that draws the eye upward, establishing a visual dialogue between the angular metal structure and the natural wood grain. To fully drive in the textural juxtaposition, the seats are upholstered in longhair sheepskin, adding a warm, inviting texture that contrasts beautifully with the cool, industrial feel of the metal frame and the earthy wooden backrest.
More than just seating, this pair functions as sculptural pieces that showcase Finazzi’s ability to harmonise disparate materials and forms. The combination of materials creates a compelling visual and tactile experience, showcasing the skill and creativity of Italian craftsmanship. Whether arranged around a dining table or displayed as standalone accent pieces, they encapsulate a bold design language, merging functionality with a strong artistic presence.

This set of six dining chairs from Europe reflects the post-war desire to bring warmth, comfort, and handcrafted detail into everyday interiors. The set rejects austerity while embracing the value of natural materials and tactile elements while seamlessly blending form and function with organic honesty.
The use of luxurious sheepskin upholstery speaks to the era’s renewed appreciation for natural textures and artisanal softness, transforming dining chairs from functional necessities into cosy, elegant invitations to linger. The sheepskin’s richness enhances both visual and sensory appeal, its natural warmth and variation creating a focal point providing comfort. Each chair features graceful, solid wooden frames that offer sturdy support for the upholstered cushions, while maintaining a refined profile. The set’s durability is ensured by the multiple stretchers placed between the legs of the chairs. These stretchers give the chairs’ silhouette a more angular impression, perfectly balanced by the soft look of the fabric. Together, the contrast between the tactile softness of the upholstery and the smooth solidity of the wood creates a harmonious dialogue of form and texture.
This set is equally at home in a modern or eclectic interior, offering enduring elegance and comfort. The combination of craftsmanship, natural materials, and timeless proportions makes them a standout set to balance any table.

Wood, in many ways, is more valuable than other materials used in furniture manufacturing because its natural grain guarantees that each piece is unique. This is especially important in the case of this set of five, as each chair is unique but together, they still form a gorgeous set. The love for wood was carried well into the late 20th century, inspired by mid-century modernism.
This Scandinavian set carries with it the same beloved modernist characteristics that were applied to mid-century pieces – simplicity, functionality – and shows the continuing appreciation of quality materials and craftsmanship. The set’s aesthetic is defined by the angled and slatted backrests with three horizontal slats. The slats have a gentle “hill” shape with a rounded top. This structure creates an airy and rhythmic look that is further complemented by the legs’ side stretchers that, like the rest of the frames, have straight lines. The solid wood bodies have strong, confident lines, yet, the set still exudes organic charm resulting from the richly coloured pinewood, the gently rounded edges and the upholstered seats. Pine is a truly versatile wood with strong patterns and grain in various colours. Its natural qualities are decorative elements in themselves, adding to the organic charm of this set that is evocative of the mid-century aesthetic. The seats are upholstered in a soft, light sheepskin that pairs beautifully with the wood’s smooth surface and colour. The resulting look is even more impactful when the five chairs are placed together.
Defined by their clean lines, simplicity of design, high quality materials and excellent joinery, each of these dining chairs was created by exceptionally skilled Scandinavian craftsmen who made sure they are just as durable, sturdy, and functional as their predecessors.

As new materials like plastic, foam, and fibreglass revolutionised the production process in the postwar period, Scandinavian designers still valued craft over industrialisation. This sculptural sofa is a beautiful evidence of this heritage and the mastery of Danish cabinetmakers.
Many of the most renowned Danish designers were trained architects as well. This knowledge and training can be clearly traced in the structure of this stunning sofa. Many elements emblematic of mid-century design are also apparent: sleek lines, simple geometries, an open layout, and the impeccable quality of the materials and craftsmanship. The design is defined by its angles, starting with the tilted back and the raised seat towards the front. The sculptural wooden arms and legs follow these lines, creating visual balance. The mostly rounded edges are broken by the pair of straight stretchers set between the front and the back legs. The button tufting on the backrest rhymes greatly with the long horizontal lines, and is a stylish feature in itself as well. Though mid-century Danish manufacturers may not have the name recognition as designers do in the mass market, they were evidently just as integral in developing a modern aesthetic in Europe. The sleek and stylish look of this sofa, from the unique wooden frame to the upholstered body and the visible joinery, embodies this aesthetic.
The designer of this model clearly prized the marriage of form and function. To this day, young Scandinavian designers still look to the mid-century masters for inspiration, which should come as no surprise looking at this sofa.

In the years after the Second World War, Danish designers quietly transformed the language of modern furniture. Moving away from the austerity of early functionalism, they explored a softer, more organic approach to furniture making, balancing clean geometry with inviting tactility. Designers experimented with sculptural silhouettes that felt approachable yet sophisticated, often pairing fine craftsmanship with innovative upholstery techniques to achieve furniture that was elegant but deeply comfortable.
This three-seater sofa from the 1950s beautifully embodies that ethos. Its gently flared arms and subtly tilted backrest give the piece a graceful, almost embracing profile, while the deep seat promises true comfort. The upholstery, a textured, off-white fabric, adds warmth and tactile richness, complementing the restrained lines of the frame. Tufted button detailing across the backrest introduces a sense of rhythm and craftsmanship, elevating the sofa from purely functional seating to a thoughtfully composed piece. The proportions are carefully judged: generous enough for lounging yet visually light, with raised wooden legs that lift the form and prevent it from feeling heavy. It is a design that invites long hours of conversation or quiet rest without sacrificing visual elegance.
Timeless yet unmistakably mid-century, this Danish sofa carries a quiet sophistication that transcends trends. Both practical and poetic, it stands as a reminder that modernism at its best is deeply attuned to the rhythms of everyday living. Danish makers became masters at this balance, producing pieces that could be both understated and richly expressive.

This gorgeous daybed with dark wood legs was inspired by classic Scandinavian furniture design and simplicity. ‘Nordic Modern’ is a recognized term around the world, standing for the characteristic style of the Nordic countries’ design created during the 20th century. Pieces from the mid-century era, like this daybed, are characterized by clarity in design and extremely high-quality craftsmanship and choice of materials.
The streamlined solid wood frame of this model features a robust, fully upholstered top, and sturdy wood legs. From the minimalistic design to the focus on the wood, this daybed has the characteristics of “honest” design that has been a core concept among Scandinavian furniture designers and makers. The sleek look is the result of the clean lines, functional design and expert craftsmanship. Furthermore, in the absence of ornamentation, the luxurious upholstery stays in focus, utilizing the sheepskin’s texture to break the straight lines visually. If there is a single common denominator for Nordic Modern, it is not so much the design or form as the quality of the execution, the woodwork and the upholstery. This daybed excels in these areas, bringing modernism and quality to any space.
Scandinavia has a long history of furniture-making. Through the 19th century, the area also had a very strong tradition of cabinetmaking, or producing traditional furniture by hand. In the early 20th century, these cabinetmaking traditions began to merge with modern forces like industrialization; this daybed however, is a handmade piece that remains quite rare.

A desire for functionalism went hand in hand with understatement, refinement, and elegance. The Danish mid-century furniture designer was concerned with graceful proportions and restrained, harmonious ornament while reinstating the ideals of fine craftsmanship. He desired sleekness. He revered the maxim “form follows function.”
This spectacular daybed is essentially a simple, refined design standing on solid wood legs. What makes it stand out is its opulent upholstery. Yak hide provides warmth, and wherever they are placed, they provide an attractive Nordic look. Renowned for its decadent thickness and length, this material has been the accessory of choice for modernist architects and designers throughout the 1950s. Today they are perfect for creating the mid-century look in any space. This daybed - unlike sofa beds - can be easily placed and used as a bench in large entryways, next to windows, or at the foot of a bed thanks to its functionality. Thanks to its visual qualities, mainly the yak hair’s lush texture and colour, this infinitely cosy daybed can also function as a kind of sculpture to break the mostly straight lines of any minimalistic space.
Characterized by functionality, simplicity and clean lines, Danish design is all about harmony. Here, the pairing of the materials creates this balance as the understated wooden structure complements and supports the extravagant yak hide. Danish design also left much room for individuality thanks to which this daybed is one of a kind with its stylish edge.

This spectacular two-seater sofa by Swedish designer, Svante Skogh, is a rather rare example of the interior and furniture designer’s repertoire. With a creative and masterfully crafted wooden structure and fully upholstered body, this model deserves the limelight in Swedish design history.
This sofa combines function and aesthetic in a striking manner, keeping the form in service of the user while keeping it elegant and modern. The union of the shell-shaped body and the back legs’ structure define this model. The round, welcoming lines of the body and the straight, smooth lines of the arms and legs complement each other, resulting in a harmonious appearance. The back legs not only support the bodies, but also rise to form the support for the armrests. The clear lined wooden frame of this sofa contrasts beautifully with the sheepskin covered body and gives it a very photographic appearance. The armrests’ peculiar concave angle is a small, but ingenious detail, that highlights their form and creates a focal point. Due to the well-chosen proportions, angled back, and the high-quality of the cabinetry and upholstery, this two-seater sofa is outstandingly comfortable. With determination and intensive marketing, the manufacturer, Seffle Möbelfabrik grew to become one of Western Sweden's largest furniture companies during the 1930s.
In Sweden, “svensk design” (Swedish design) in particular operates as a set of relations linking the everyday world - composed of objects, spaces, people - to the cultural ideologies that motivate the persistence of a social democratically infused “way of life.” Thanks to this sentiment, cabinetmakers, like at Seffle Möbelfabrik, put an emphasis on soft elegance and functionality, making this sofa model timeless in every sense of the word.

About the designer:
Swedish furniture designer Svante Skogh is best known for his mid-century designs produced by Seffle (sometimes spelled as Säffle) Möbelfabrik. Throughout his career in the 1950s and 1960s, he worked with a number of furniture producers. Despite his famous designs, not a lot is known about the designer. His designs ranged from coffee tables to seating, such as his famous Bodö Series from 1957. Many of Skogh’s designs have survived and are highly sought after on the vintage market today. ~H.

This lovely “Duetto” loveseat was designed back in the 1950s to bring the sitters closer together. This intention is clearly traceable in Ottelin’s drawings, where the back was drawn as hands embracing the users.
A loveseat derives its name from holding two people close to one another. First invented in the 17th century, this two-person chair was originally intended for women wearing large dresses with hoops to sit comfortably. In the Nordic countries, loveseats, such as this model, were typically made of quality woods with fully upholstered bodies to enhance the cosiness. This rare “Duetto” is unquestionably Ottelin’s most distinctive sofa model. This is primarily due to the peculiar back that has a heart shape and envelopes towards the front to form the arms as well. At the top, the edge curves outward creating a welcoming and open look. The homely curviness and precision clearly show the influence of Werner West, Ottelin’s teacher. The body, upholstered in honey-coloured sheepskin, is paired with tapered, lacquered wood legs. This combination is a true Nordic characteristic, keeping the tradition of using organic materials at its core.
As this “Duetto” sofa shows, the shapes and forms of Nordic minimalism of the mid-century are infinitely interesting. Additionally, the stylish look is always paired with the highest quality craftsmanship, here provided by the Finnish furniture company, Kervo Snickerifabrik, Oy Stockmann. The Kerava cabinetmaking company was founded on February 1, 1862 and Ottelin served as director of the company's furniture department from 1953 to 1954 and as artistic director of interior design from 1955 until his death in 1971.

About the designer:
Karl Olof Ottelin (Helsinki, 3 May 1917 - Helsinki, 9 February 1971) was a Finnish interior designer and furniture designer who, in the 1950s, was the director and chief designer of Stockmann's furniture department.
Ottelin began his studies at the Central School of Art and Design in 1939, but had to suspend his studies for 1941–1944 due to conscription. He graduated as an interior designer in 1946 and started at Stockmann's drawing office in 1948. He served as director of the company's furniture department from 1953 to 1954 and as artistic director of interior design from 1955 until his death in 1971.
Ottelin's best-known products are modern wooden chairs, but he also designed cabinet and shelving systems and extensive interior design for a variety of properties. In 1952, Olof Ottelin designed the furniture for the Swedish School of Economics in Helsinki together with Lisa Johansson-Pape (lamps), Yki Nummi (coloring) and Dora Jung (textiles). Ottelin also did design work for the wallpaper factory Pihlgren & Ritola and the television manufacturer Helvar.
The versatile designer was also known as a cartoonist, whose drawings were published in the interior magazine Kaunis Koti, in live TV programs on YLE, and in the Swedish-language publications' Nya Pressen, Lucifer, Astra and Nordisk Medicin. He also wrote articles for the journal Architect, among others. In January-February 1989, the Amos Anderson Art Museum organized an exhibition of Olof Ottel's furniture and drawings.

By the middle of the 20th century, design and handicrafts from Sweden had caught the eye of the outside world. Since the 1910s, the modern movement had worked for a modern and functional form. Functionalism had a major public breakthrough during the Stockholm Exhibition in 1930, however, as this peculiar sofa shows, the objective, square and stripped-down functionalist style was short-lived.
The term ‘Swedish Modern’ was quickly established as a reinterpretation of modernity during the 1940s, and the early and square functionalism was replaced by the new Swedish Modern style’s freer and more artistic ideal. These qualities perfectly describe this amazing sofa, standing on four club-shaped legs. This two-seater sofa has a lot of character with a welcoming presence that exudes high quality craftsmanship and design. The rounded edges and curves create flowing lines, which is further enhanced by the upholstery’s rich texture and softness. The many tufted buttons on the backrest are arranged symmetrically and adds even more character to the body. The splayed legs’ shape is in accordance with the rounded edges of the body, and together with the armrests -where the wood is exposed - showcases the wood’s beauty. With a careful combination of organic shapes, master craftsmanship, and luxurious materials, both Swedish modernity, crafts history and tradition were combined in this sofa.
Swedish Modern made the Swedish form widely known. This second generation of 'functionalists' affirmed craftsmanship, tradition and history. The new style thus signalled both status, unassuming and sensitive awareness right up to the 1960s. The country had a second international breakthrough at the end of the 1930s - under the term Swedish Modern, and a third one that is happening right now, and looking at this sofa, is unlikely to end anytime soon.

Mid-Century Modernism is a recognized term around the world, standing for the characteristic style of the furniture designs created during the mid-20th century. As this sofa shows, furniture created in this period is characterized by functionality, clarity in design, and extremely high-quality craftsmanship and choice of materials.
Thanks to its crescent shape, this sofa style is referred to as the “banana” sofa. It is designed to bring people closer together to create a cosy atmosphere, which is a core concept of the era’s design. The visual appearance of this sofa however, is not the only thing that echoes the era’s design, but also the exquisite craftsmanship under the upholstered body. Many of the well-known European architects of the era felt the urge to try their hand at three-seater sofas, adhering to the period’s streamlined modernism. In combination with the unadorned styles of mid-century design, this sofa brings together the best attributes of the era. The slim wood legs add a modern, organic feel, balancing out the voluptuous profile of the body. The tapered legs’ angle is adjusted to provide perfect stability, while the masterful sense of proportions and the soft upholstery guarantee functionality and comfort. The tufting on the backseat is a stylish addition that highlights the sofa’s beautiful curvature and the rich texture of the sheepskin.
This three-seater sofa has been reupholstered in dark-coloured sheepskin, accentuating the wooden legs and the luxurious feel and look and pairs incredibly with curvilinear shapes, as evidenced by this sofa. Sheepskin is the ultimate material for comfort, warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The artisanal production quality is evident throughout this pair and takes the mid-century idea of “furniture that last for generations” seriously.
