Torbjørn Afdal (1917-1999) is remembered as one of the most well-respected Norwegian designers of the postwar period. Afdal’s work is characterised by a refined understanding of material and form. Oftentimes the combination of art and tradition is evident in his creations, as he possessed the talent of utilising the natural properties of wood. This bench, which was crafted in collaboration with Harry Moen as part of the “Biri” collection, is a wonderful example of Norwegian mid-century design.

This bench’s style is effective without the need for heavy ornamental elements. Uncompromising on quality materials and craftsmanship, the design is focused on functionality. Norwegian craftsmen of the mid-20th century often produced simple, well-made pieces of homegrown woods such as walnut and pine. The pine frame of this bench is outstanding, both in visual and technical terms. It was in Denmark that Modernism reigned between the 1920s and 1960s and produced some of the most iconic pieces of furniture to this day. The Danish modernist movement was shaped by two influences. The first was the German Bauhaus; from it, Danish Modernism adopted the trend towards functionalism and this is why one of the hallmarks of Danish furniture is its simplicity. The second was an even earlier influence found in the Funkis style, an aesthetic based on softer lines and rounded shapes.

This beautifully crafted sofa features impeccable edges, sleek minimalism, and subtle curves. The quality of the design is matched by the outstanding workmanship of the maker. The lower wooden frame of this sofa offers a striking contrast to the supple black leather upholstery, creating a visually captivating aesthetic. Model “110” reflects this approach through its dramatic winged silhouette and restrained material palette. Braakman’s designs from the 1950s and 1960s are characterised by clean lines, functional clarity, and carefully balanced proportions, qualities clearly visible in this chair. The design showcases a beautiful interplay between the slender metal construction and natural materials. The black lacquered frame forms a precise architectural structure, outlining the chair with crisp lines. Folke Ohlsson was one of the first Swedish designers who managed to bring “Swedish Modern” design to the United States’ market successfully. According to the story, when Ohlsson arrived in the United States, he took his suitcase and cardboard to hotels all over the country inviting salesmen, department stores, and decorators to view his miniature designs and watch as he disassembled and reassembled his chair design. He quickly became notorious for his patented “knock-down” construction that reduced shipping and storage costs and helped to make the Swedish company Dux a household name in the USA.
