Harald Notini, after becoming creative director in 1916, drove the company forward, producing what were considered pioneering and distinctive luminaires for the time
Like most light fixtures of the period, the design of this table lamp assumes a simpler look, Notini prized the marriage of form and function, with a poise that is hard to force or imitate. The construction is straightforward through the use of metal. The piece is crafted from patinated brass, a quintessentially mid-century modern material. The lamp is grounded by the round base, and flows upwards in a sleek, elegant manner towards the pleated shade, and ending in a sharp finial. Scandinavian mid-century lighting pieces like this lamp are famous for multiple reasons. On one hand, the commitment to quality craftsmanship ensures durability, a hallmark that endears for generations. On the other hand, the timeless allure lies in the ability to evoke a sense of nostalgia while remaining relevant in today's design landscape. This Swedish floor lamp is a fine example of the functional yet elegant lighting produced during the mid-20th century. Scandinavian lighting designers of the period often focused on creating versatile lighting solutions for the home, incorporating adjustable elements without sacrificing visual balance. Rather than relying on ornament, these designs emphasised quality materials and practical features that allowed a single fixture to serve multiple purposes.
The lamp is built around three slender brass stems that rise from a compact conical base before gently branching outward. Each arm terminates in an individually adjustable brass neck, allowing the fabric shades to be directed independently for reading, accent, or ambient lighting. The three shades can be arranged at different angles, creating a dynamic composition while distributing light evenly throughout a room. A small metal element unites the stems, reinforcing the structure without interrupting its delicate silhouette. The contrast between the warm brass, dark lacquered base, and textured fabric shades gives the lamp visual richness while remaining understated. Despite accommodating three separate light sources, the design feels remarkably light thanks to the fine proportions of the stems and the restrained detailing throughout. As a result, this three-arm floor lamp can provide both ambient and directional light while integrating flawlessly in an interior.
Scandinavian lighting is appreciated for combining practicality with refined design. This example captures those qualities particularly well, offering adjustable illumination within a composition that remains balanced and unmistakably mid-century.

Carl Auböck II was born in Vienna, Austria in 1900. After finishing the School of Graphic Design and the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, he attended the Bauhaus and joined a small group of artists in becoming the founding members of the now legendary school.
This pair of “Vice Versa” floor lamps reflects a fascination with sculptural simplicity and materials, while representing a unique piece of design history. The model, first thought to be created by Auböck 1952, has caused a debate within the design world decades after it was first issued. Within Denmark, the “Vice Versa” lamp was widely sold under the label of Svend Aage Holm-Sørensen, a key figure of Scandinavian design. The controversy still surrounds the model today, however what is undisputed is its beauty. Each lamp is composed of a slender black lacquered metal stem rising from a circular weighted base, creating a simple vertical silhouette. At the top sits the defining feature: a shade placed on a round metal holder. The shade can be reversed and re-positioned, allowing the direction and character of the light to shift depending on its placement. This element reflects Bauhaus functionality principles while still feeling elegant. Despite the minimal construction, the lamps have a strong sculptural presence, particularly through the balance between the thin stem and the oversized curved reflector that mirrors the conical base and ties in the design.
In 1925, Karl Heinrich Auböck passed away at the age of 53, leaving Carl II and the sculptor Mara Uckunowa, Carl’s wife, to take over operations of the Werkstätte at 23 Bernardgasse. In 1954 Carl Auböck II was awarded four gold medals at the Milan Triennale for designing a range of metalware, and pieces like this pair of lamps stand as proof of his genius.

Crafted with precision and attention to detail, this model is a testament to the aesthetic sensibilities and commitment to quality of both Notini and Böhlmarks. Unlike many designs that relied on elaborate detailing, Notini allowed proportion and material to carry the visual impact. The stem is grounded by a brass sphere with four curved legs stabilizing it, creating a simple yet unique elevated base. Its design not only illuminates a space but also adds a sculptural element, making it both a quintessential example of mid-century modern lighting and an interesting visual accent in any interior.

As this model shows, their lighting pieces were of the highest quality both in material and visual terms.

Evident with this floor lamp, mid-century lighting fixtures are characterised by their sleek silhouettes, geometric shapes, and innovative use of materials.
At the very beginning of modernism, many Swedish designers started to balance modern creativity and classical elegance. By entering the mid-century modern era, lighting design across Scandinavia became known for being stylish, clear, and elegant with a creative edge. This floor lamp, exemplifies the refinement that defines both the era and LUCO Armaturfabrik’s pieces. This chandelier, attributed to Harald Notini and manufactured at Arvid Böhlmarks Lampfabrik in the 1940s, exemplifies the elegance and clarity of mid-century Swedish lighting design. Böhlmarks, one of Sweden’s most renowned lighting manufacturers, was celebrated for its collaborations with leading designers of the time, producing works that blended refined craftsmanship with a distinctly modern aesthetic.
This six-armed chandelier is composed around a central body from which six gracefully curved brass arms extend in perfect symmetry. Each arm terminates in a candle-like socket with a brass flower detail. The arms sweep gently into the shades, creating a rhythmic silhouette that appears light despite the fixture's generous scale. At the centre, the brass body is adorned with a scalloped detail and an elegant finial that draws the eye downward, balancing the composition both visually and structurally. The warm brass surface reflects the light cast through the fabric shades, softening the metal while emphasizing the fluid lines of the framework. Every transition, from the stem to the center, and from the arms to the sockets, is carefully designed, demonstrating the precision of Böhlmarks' metalworking and the thoughtful proportions that distinguish Notini's lighting designs.
A well-chosen lighting piece can embellish and shift the atmosphere of any space. In Scandinavia, interior lighting was of particular importance - with dark winters in the Nordic countries, light has been used to bring a feeling of cosiness and warmth within, referred to as “mysigt” in Swedish, or more widely known as the Danish concept of “hygge”. Swedish designers have mastered the art of “mys”, crafting some of the most unique and modern lamps of Scandinavia, as this beautiful piece demonstrates.

Harald Notini was a Swedish sculptor and designer who served as the artistic director of Arvid Böhlmarks Lampfabrik from 1916 onward. Under his leadership, Böhlmarks became an important Swedish lighting manufacturer, producing luminaires that helped define the transition from the refined Swedish Grace movement in the 1920s to the Swedish Modern decades that followed.
Model “6913” is a great example of Swedish Grace. The table lamp features a tapering, fluted shaft in nickel-plated brass. The vertical ribs catch the light to give the otherwise restrained form a remarkable sense of depth and dynamism. The body narrows towards the base before terminating in a circular foot, creating a stable foundation while maintaining the lamp's elegant silhouette. Above, a sawtooth detail provides another eye-catching detail. The design is completed by the broad conical shade, whose crisp geometry complements the taper of the column below. The interplay between the cool metallic finish and the soft texture of the shade creates a pleasing contrast, while the symmetry of the composition reflects the movement's preference for refinement and great craftsmanship. Classic without excess, model “6913” demonstrates Harald Notini's ability to create art that withstands the passage of time, from the interwar period until today.
Today, Notini's work is represented in the collections of the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, and his lighting designs remain among the most sought-after examples of early twentieth-century Swedish design.

Itsu, short for Itä-Suomen Sähkö (eng. Eastern Finland Electricity), was a small, lesser-known manufacturer that produced characteristic models in small quantities. Itsu stands as a beacon of innovation in mid-century modern design. This lamp represents an era in which Finland saw the birth of many of its most iconic lighting models.
The form of this pair is built around an opal glass diffuser that has a slightly conical and rounded profile that gives it subtle depth without becoming visually heavy. With its sleek and simple aesthetic, and in the absence of heavy ornamentation, the emphasis falls on materials. The use of opal glass is central to the design. The diffuser softens the glow and disperses it, creating a more ambient and balanced illumination. The relatively small diameter and shallow projection also means they can be used in tighter spaces without disrupting the proportions of the room.
The 20th century was a time of great innovation in Finnish design, as makers pushed the boundaries of what was possible with new materials and manufacturing techniques. At the same time, there was a strong emphasis on simplicity and functionality, as this pair demonstrates. As designers sought to create objects that were both beautiful and practical, they left an unforgettable mark in the history of light and ambiance.

With pieces inspired by nature and the tranquility of everyday life, Ilmari Tapiovaara was able to showcase designs that captured the essence of Finnish identity. In a region where darkness dominates much of the year, lighting offers more than illumination - it evokes warmth, optimism and emotional connection. In the case of this pair of sculptural table lamps made of painted metal layers, the comforting resemblance to the beloved character of “Maija Mehiläinen” brings a sense of joy and familiarity into Nordic homes.
Recalling the lovable German children’s book character published in 1912, “Maija Mehiläinen” - meaning Maya the Bee - this model carries undeniable charisma, with Maya’s stripes recognisable in the lamp’s structure. The shades are made up of a tall cylindrical forms of slender metal layered discs, each layer delicately floating above the next, emitting a soft and diffused glow. Resembling the abdomen part of a honeybee, it stands on three elegant brass legs, running up through the fourteen slates, and finally poking out from the top, bearing a resemblance to delicate bee-like antennae. While having the appearance of the insect itself, the design also gives the impression of a beehive - especially when they are switched on and the warm light seeps out in between the gaps of the layers, like drizzling honey from the cracks of honeycomb walls.
This lighting model stands out in the most wholesome and comforting way, capable of evoking dear childhood memories as well as keeping spirits up during the long winter months for those longing for the lightness of spring, full of flowers and life.
