Set of Four Oak Chairs by Ilse Rix for Uldum Møbelfabrik, Denmark 1961 (sold)

$0.00

The rare chair model this set is composed of, is Danish designer, Ilse Rix’s earliest design from the 1960s.

The soft, yet brutalist appearance of these chairs is no coincidence, the inspiration came from inside the Rix family; renowned architect and designer Ove Rix helped to develop brutalism in Denmark and left his clear mark on Danish architecture and design. These chairs show an interesting and successful combination of brutalism and Scandinavian modern design. This set is defined by unornamented, solid wood surfaces with exposed joints, and raw, straight lines. Brutalist design extends the functional logic of Modernism, privileging bold and rugged forms and leaving all details undisguised. The touch of Danish mid-century design is most visible in the slightly curved backrests, that soften the look. In the vein of traditional Scandinavian design, the minimalistic appearance does not take away from the level of comfort of these chairs. The removable seat cushions are upholstered in a tufted, premium bouclé fabric, which contrasts cleverly with the chair frames.

The sturdy legs provide a firm base for these chairs, while the backrests offer solid support for the back. The Danish manufacturer, Uldum Møbelfabrik was based in Uldum, Jutland and specialized in dining tables and chairs designed by Ilse Rix and Johannes Andersen. The simple oak wood is the visual and palpable antithesis of the sleek, smooth and suave. Brutalist design encompasses that which is crafted, hewn and worked by hand. This set emerges through its statement pieces that can blend into a variety of design styles.
